The dictionary definition of automatism is a subconscious execution, and for surrealists, the exploitation of that execution with fully conscious purpose. Sometimes for me the fully conscious purpose is evident, and a stricter representation results. Whether I begin with the subconscious doodle or a fully envisioned metaphor, the result feels surreal, and an idea takes shape.
