The Indianapolis Art Center is looking for an organized and self-disciplined person with experience to work part-time (under 30 hours per week) in our Exhibitions and Events Department.   The Gallery and Studio Technician works with the Exhibitions and Education Departments in the general upkeep of the galleries and studios, assisting in exhibition installation in the galleries and Arts Park, and providing technical studio functions for Education.  The position is generally needed Monday through Thursday with some occasional weekend work required.

Essential Job Functions

  • Provide technical support for day-to-day functions of galleries including patching and painting, artwork leveling, lighting, dusting, and overall gallery maintenance.
  • With Exhibitions Department, assist with install and de-install of gallery and ArtsPark exhibitions.
  • Assist in the maintenance of the permanent collection and the ArtsPark sculptures/installations
  • Assist the Exhibitions Associate with packing and unpacking artwork, and filing condition reports as necessary.
  • With Exhibitions Associate, maintain and manage gallery prep and keep inventory of exhibits materials, supplies, and hardware.
  • Ensure studios are adequately equipped for classes by assisting Facilities Departments with studio set ups and responding to instructor needs.
  • Provide technical assistance for 2D studios including painting, cleaning, organization, and light maintenance of equipment/fixtures.
  • Support 2D studios by coordinating schedule of figure study and portrait models, recruiting models as necessary to meet need, and processing payments in a timely fashion.
  • Assist with inventory of education materials and supplies.
  • Work with Studio Chairs on identifying and executing storage and organizational solutions.
  • Provide support for Education events as needed.
  • Competency Requirements (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

Successful candidate should have a background in visual fine arts. Should demonstrate the ability to be an efficient self-starter, do quality work, have strong customer service skills, be an effective communicator, team-oriented, and be receptive to feedback.

Should be comfortable using computer applications including but not limited to Microsoft Office, able to use the internet and email, and be proficient in exhibitions installation and maintenance.

Education and experience:

The ideal candidate should be knowledgeable or be interested in pursuing a career in fine arts.
