The Arts Council of Indianapolis announces an opportunity for an undergraduate or graduate student, or a recent B.A./M.A. holder, to serve as an intern with its Public Art department.  The department consists of one full-time Director and a Coordinator shared with the Artist Services department, in addition to volunteers, service-learning students, or fellowship students as needed.

Eligibility:  Current undergraduate junior or senior, recent college or advanced studies graduate, or current M.A. or Ph.D. candidate.  Community college students must have completed the equivalent of 16 semester-long courses to be eligible for this opportunity.

Commitment:  15 hours per week for 10 weeks (flexible; 2-3 days/wk)

Stipend:  $1,500.00 for the summer (based on $10/hr for 150 hours total)

Start date:  Week of May 28, 2018 (flexible)

End date:  Week of August 6, 2018 (flexible)

Credit:  May be used for community service or independent study credit upon coordination with student and student’s home institution

Duties:  The intern will primarily assist the Public Art staff with the Indy East Art Peace and Cultural Corridor Consortium Indy (3CIndy) projects. Indy East Art Peace, a collaboration with Near East Area Renewal (NEAR), is empowering a cohort of Near Eastside artists, Near Eastside residents, and East District police officers in planning community building through arts-based activity, with the goal of preventing crime in the Rural Street corridor.  The 3CIndy project is a collaboration with Transit Drives Indy, and is working with six artists for creative placemaking along the new Red Line Rapid Transit and community-engaged design for the future Purple Line Rapid Transit.

In addition to performing assigned tasks, the intern will likely be exposed to many facets of public art work including project meetings, selection processes, on-site installations, master planning, and community engagement. The intern may also participate in the planning and staffing of a day-long public art workshop to be held in Indianapolis on June 29. In addition, the intern may be exposed to other Arts Council departments including Artist Services, the Indianapolis Artsgarden, Gallery 924 at the Arts Council, Grant Services, Arts Education, and Marketing.

The intern may also choose to work on a public-art-related independent project with departmental supervision, as desired or as time permits.

Schedule:  The internship schedule is flexible. The intern may work two or three blocks of time per week as convenient, totaling on average 15 hours per week, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.  The total number of hours for this internship is 150 during the course of the summer.  Some evening or weekend work may be needed.

Qualifications:

  • Education:  Current undergraduate junior or senior, or recent A.A., B.S., or B.A. holder.  Current M.A. or M.F.A. students are preferred. Appropriate majors include (but are not limited to) Art History, Arts Administration, Public Administration, Museum Studies, Fine Art/Studio Art, English, History, Information Science, Journalism, Communications, Criminal Justice, and Social Work.  Applicants must have completed the equivalent of one English composition class with a grade of B or better.
  • Experience:  At least one year (or the equivalent) working in an office environment with extensive computer use is required.  Prior work in an art museum, art gallery, public art program, or community development setting (or similar) is preferred. Prior work in community arts is preferred. A background in creative placemaking, public transit planning, and/or criminal justice administration is desirable, but not required.
  • Skills:  Excellent written and verbal English; demonstrated knowledge of proper English grammar and punctuation; familiarity with the vocabulary of the visual arts field, and good research skills are required. For the nature of the projects to be undertaken, a strong social justice orientation and demonstrated commitment to principles of equity and inclusion are required. Computer fluency is required, particularly with Word, Excel, and online tools such as Dropbox, Google Docs, Google Drive, and Doodle. Prior familiarity with and love of public art is preferred.  Familiarity with administration of a Wordpress site is desirable. Academic or practical experience with the visual arts is preferred.
