Big Car Seeks Lead Builder and Facilities Manager

   

Lead Builder and Facilities Manager (Staff Artist)
Ongoing full-time (salaried, exempt)
Salary: Negotiable
Position Summary

Big Car’s Builder is involved in (primarily) helping build and maintain physical things for Big Car (including the building and grounds) — with a focus on the shop at The Tube — and (secondarily) helping build community when staffing programs and projects, usually as secondary support. The Builder is a key member of the creative team and follows the guidance of the project management team and works in cooperation and collaboration with the other builder or builders on the team, as well as with volunteers. The Builder’s reports to the CEO and supervises assistants, contract builders, volunteers and other part-time workers — including partnerships such as the summer youth employment program, TeenWorks.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Manage, build and design physical projects with and per the request of the team
  • Interface with the public as a community builder during projects and programs, including working with volunteer groups
  • Maintain Big Car sites (Tube, Listen Hear, warehouse space, artist residency and all related grounds) as welcoming, functioning neighborhood cultural hubs for program and operational purposes (includes public and storage areas)
  • Oversee and supervise daily operations of the Tube Shop, including supervision of related staff
  • Update project managers when tasks are completed through a regular reporting system
  • Keep an updated calendar and to-do list, noting new work requests right away
  • Track time on projects
  • Work in collaboration with other staff artists to complete projects

General Responsibilities

  • Support fellow Big Car staff on their projects when needed
  • Utilize volunteers when possible
  • Participate in weekly staff meetings
  • Reply to Big Car communications
  • Document work in photos and social media

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Creative design/build experience
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
  • Problem-solving skills

Education and Experience

  • Some college coursework required; degree preferred
  • Experience with community-building strategies and/or social practice art
  • Training on using wood and metal shop equipment

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds
  • Must be amenable to a non-traditional workplace setting
  • Must have transportation
  • Ability to move trailers as much of our work is mobile
