CARMEL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

The Carmel Symphony Orchestra (CSO), now in its 42nd year, provides quality orchestral performances, music education programs, and outreach to the fifth largest city in Indiana and the surrounding communities of Indianapolis. In 2017, Carmel, Indiana was recognized as:

  • No. 4 in the nation by Apartment List for Best Cities for Families

The CSO is the resident orchestra for The Palladium. Opening in 2011, the nationally known, state-of- the-art, 1,600- seat concert hall and home to Grammy Award-winning performer Michael Feinstein and his Great American Songbook Initiative.

The CSO is seeking a dynamic, full-time Executive Director to direct all activities related to the management of the Orchestra’s music concerts, education programs, community activities, fundraising, and staff to build upon 18 years of growth and artistic development fostered by its retiring chief executive officer. The CSO is a League of America Orchestra’s Group 6 orchestra with a budget of approximately $750,000. Salary and benefits are negotiable and will be regionally competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience; position available June 2018.

Job Role and Summary
The Executive Director of the CSO will continue the forward momentum of the organization to constantly improve its musical product, as it operates on a stable financial basis and carries outs its obligation to serve as a community cultural and educational institution. Having hired Music Director Janna Hymes in May 2017, it is an exciting time of opportunity for the CSO!

The Executive Director is a managerial leadership position responsible for the human and financial resources of the CSO to achieve the orchestra’s mission. To that end, the Executive Director is responsible and accountable for all aspects of the organization, and implementing the policies set by the Board of Directors. The Executive Director will serve as the chief executive officer and reports to the Board of Directors through the Board Chair.

Job Requirements

  • A minimum of five years leadership and/or management experience with an orchestra or performing arts organization
  • Proven fundraising and donor cultivation talents
  • Solid financial management and reporting skills
  • Strong and effective oral and written communications skills
  • Superb interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with all CSO stakeholders: Music Director, the Board of Directors and CSO staff, donors, business and government partners, the media, community leaders, etc.
  • Ability to effectively motivate the Board of Directors, staff and volunteers to achieve the CSO’s mission and goals
  • Local residency is required

Job Duties and Responsibilities - Oversight and management of strategy and planning, Board relations, fundraising, community engagement and education, artistic administration, marketing and advocacy, finance and grants. The executive director works in consort with the music director regarding programming, concert production and musician management.
