IndyGo Seeks Volunteers for Story Gathering Project

Call for Volunteers

CityWrite, in partnership with Indianapolis Public Transportation Corporation (IndyGo), IndyGo Transit Ambassadors, Arts Council of Indianapolis, and Writing Futures at Marian University, seeks volunteers to collect stories that explore the meaning of home for an upcoming Spirit & Place Festival offering. Volunteers will chat with community members, encouraging them to write or speak their moving stories and contribute to a public narrative art project.

Volunteers will be asked to engage with community members by listening, recording, and writing the stories that emerge from supplied conversational prompts related to home and community. Volunteers will collect these stories in downtown Indianapolis, near bus shelters, as well as at the Julia M. Carson Transit Center September through November. As part of the 2016 Spirit & Place Festival, these stories, along with video and photographs, will be used to create narrative art installations which will be displayed on IndyGo buses and at the Julia M. Carson Transit Center.

They seek volunteers who are compassionate and curious, capable of listening to others, willing to attend a brief active-interview training session, and who appreciate the value of stories that challenge and inform our larger understandings of home and community. In order to complete this public narrative art project, they hope to collect the moving stories from all areas and neighborhoods of Indianapolis and Marion Country, and the assistance of volunteers is essential in reaching this goal. Volunteers may work individually or as a group. This opportunity may also be ideal for service-learning and community-engaged learning projects.

Volunteers expectations:

• Comfortable engaging in meaningful conversations with strangers
• Willing to attend a 1-hour training session (the last week of August or first week of
• Capable of working within and navigating a fluid environment
• Willing to commit to one 4-hour volunteer shift
• Willing to write up and email interviews
• Enthusiasm and pride for living in or near Indianapolis
• Educate others about what makes Indy a great place to live and work

They welcome a wide range of volunteers including people younger and older, bilingual, people with disabilities, and others!
