The David Owsley Museum of Art at Ball State University is looking for a part-time, temporary photographer to document its collection, exhibitions, and activities.

Position Title:  Temporary Photographer, Posting Number 201700226SF

Number of Vacancies:  1

New Hire Rate:  $15.90 / hr., Non-Exempt, 29 hours/wk

Position Function
Photograph works of art for the documentation of the museum’s collection, loans, acquisitions, conservation projects, exhibition installations, permanent displays, ephemeral publications, and educational activities.

Minimum Education:  High School degree or GED.

Preferred Education:  B.S. in Imaging Sciences or B.F.A. in Photography

Minimum Experience:  1 year in a professional photography studio or equivalent with knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom.

Preferred Experience: 3 years experience working in a cultural heritage institution and/or professional photography studio, or equivalent

Minimum Skills:  Ability to effectively meet deadlines.  Strong communication and organizational skills.  Detail oriented problem solving.  Ability to stand for long periods of time, climb ladders, and lift up to 40 pounds.  Ability to work both alone and as part of a team, while maintaining a positive attitude

Preferred Skills:  Software fluency: Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, and collection management systems.  Studio and on location lighting and backdrops.  Color management and digital retouching skills.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Photograph 2 and 3-dimensional original works of art in the museum’s collection, art lent to the museum, and art newly acquired by the museum.
  • Complete digital post-production, application of related metadata to file, upload to cloud storage, and link or embed images to collection management system database.
  • Be responsible for the documentation of exhibitions, installations, museum architecture, portraits, and related events.
  • Manage color and closed system calibration of monitors, cameras, and other related studio equipment. Maintain up to date knowledge of current industry standards for studio lighting, digital camera equipment, and relevant software.
  • Maintain studio equipment and software upgrades.
  • Train to handle artworks with great care.
  • Other duties as assigned.
