Tomorrow's Remnants

Vance Farrow is an artist/educator living and working in Indianapolis, Indiana. His primary studio focus is drawing, and he holds two degrees focused on the discipline: a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Murray State University and Maters of Fine Arts from the University of Cincinnati.

His studio work reflects relationships between figurative representation and abstraction, much like the play between image and sound in film. While it is difficult to separate these aspects when experiencing a movie, in a static image like a drawing both elements can be compared, contrasted, and afforded deliberate exploration. In this manner, he is particularly interested in aspects of perception, recollection, and the ways in which people carry past experiences. He describes this focus by stating, “Sometimes, memories are strictly experiential; we remember things solely because of the fact that they happened. At other times, they can be couched within the feelings that formed them: affection, displeasure, wonderment, hatred…any of the vast panoply of emotions. While the experiences that spurred these memories may be unique, I believe that they also have an underlying universal aspect, and have sought to explore this premise in my studio research.”

Farrow has exhibited across the United States and his works reside in numerous public and private collections. He has taught at the college level for 20 years, and is currently an Associate Professor of Drawing/Illustration and Foundations Studies at Herron School of Art and Design.
