The Propylaeum Historic Foundation continues the Marilyn K. Glick Women’s Enrichment Series and will feature Sarah Evans Barker on April 20, 2017. In March, 1984, Judge Barker was the first woman to be appointed a federal district court judge in Indiana.
She served as chief judge of the United States Southern District of Indiana 1994 to 2001, and assumed senior status on June 30, 2014 while continuing to manage a full caseload. Judge Barker was the first female to serve as a U.S. attorney in Indiana from 1981 to 1984. She was in private practice for four years with the Indianapolis firm of Bose, McKinney & Evans. Judge Barker began her legal career as a legislative assistant to U.S Sen. Charles H. Percy and Congressman Gilbert Gude in Washington, D.C., and special counsel to the Senate Government Operations Subcommittee.
During her career, Judge Barker served as president of the 900-member Federal Judges Association from 2007 to 2009, and continues her work on the FJA Board of Directors and has been active in judicial and bar-related organizations.
Judge Barker is also active in numerous civic, educational, cultural and religious organizations including the State of Indiana Bicentennial Commission, having been appointed by then-Governor Mitch Daniels, the board of directors of Indiana University Health Partners, Inc., and the board of the Indiana Historical Society. She has been a trailblazer for the advancement and inclusion of women in leadership positions.
The historic Propylaeum will open its doors at 5 for networking, appetizers and a cash bar. The Propylaeum is located at 1410 North Delaware Street, Indianapolis, IN 46202-2417. The lecture will begin at 6 p.m. Tickets will be available as follows:
