The Stutz Artists Association and the Miami-based organization Just My Height Art Shows® are bringing professional-quality fine art to young children in a unique exhibit to be displayed at the Raymond James Stutz Art Gallery in October. “Secret Doors” is an exhibit created especially with young children in mind. The textural, sculptural, and interactive art invite children of all ages to touch, smell, open, close, and view the artwork on display. Just My Height Art Shows are like other art exhibits, only the art is hung at a “new low” – hung at a child’s eye level (36 inches high). This approach helps to capture and instill in children a love and appreciation for fine art (not “childish” or children’s art) at an early age, thus helping to create and cultivate the art creators, collectors and consumers of the future.
The exhibit’s kid-friendly, family fun opening reception on Friday, Oct. 7 will feature games and hands-on activities—including an art scavenger hunt—designed to engage the children and their parents with the art, as well as live music and age appropriate snacks.
“Children rarely get to see art at a comfortable level for them, so this is truly an extraordinary opportunity,” said Leigh Dunnington-Jones, curator of the exhibit. “The experience of this exhibit offers children and adults the opportunity to really look at art in more than a casual way, and to explore the art together. We will have interactive pieces, an installation built from actual vintage doors donated by local businesses, a video piece, sculptures and so much more.”
Following the opening reception, the art will be on display during Gallery hours: Monday-Friday, 11am-2pm, Oct. 7-28. This juried show about Secret Doors will feature the work of 19 artists from throughout central Indiana that explores life’s many passages, both imaginary and real. The exhibit is made possible, in part, with support from the Penrod Society.
