Born in Seoul, South Korea and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, now Bloomington-based artist Sul-Jee Scully brings her bold, colorful painting and collage work to the Harrison Gallery in “Yesterday Wants More.” “…my work is also an assemblage in its content, depicting present and remembered selves and the settings that reveal them. Integral to this meditation is a look into the internal emotional narrative of the adolescent girl, a world of implacable waiting and dreaming, hopelessly mired by the dullness of everyday things. Images of passing instances and belongings are made vivid through the specificity of detail while ambiguity and abstraction reflect emotion.”
As part of our ongoing partnership with the recently formed Indianapolis Choral Artisans, Speck Gallery features the “Lake Isle of Innisfree” group show. Eleven local artists will respond to this choral work, interpreting the piece through visual art. The Choral Artisans will perform the work throughout the evening.
In the City Gallery, photographer Jack Wickes turns his lens on the city in the place-based show, “The Local.”
The Gallery Annex features “With Color and Love, Remembering Doug Arnholter.” Arnholter, known for his contemporary fresco paintings and his Mural of the World project, passed away unexpectedly earlier this year. The exhibit will include work from his daughter Molly’s collection.
In Hank & Dolly’s, Herron School of Art + Design seniors Alyssa Hoover and Megan Coffee display their senior thesis show, “Earthly Melodies.”
In the Underground, Ben Davis High School senior Bethany Habegger, as part of the school’s Capstone program, has organized an art show showcasing work of 9-12 grade students from several local Indianapolis high schools. Habegger will study painting at IU Bloomington in the fall. (This is a one night only exhibit.)
The work hangs through June 30.
