Stutz Artists Association

The Stutz Artists Association (SAA) is a nonprofit, volunteer organization of artists working in the historic Stutz Business and Arts Center, located at 212 West 10th Street on an entire city block in downtown Indianapolis. The 400,000-square-foot former car factory was renovated in the early 1990s and now houses studios for nearly 90 artists as well as offices for various small to mid size businesses. In keeping with its roots as the headquarters for the Stutz Motorcar Company, vintage and collectible cars are scattered throughout the four-story factory where the Stutz Bearcat was built.

The artists of the Stutz comprise one of the most varied and accomplished artist communities in Central Indiana. Painters of all styles are joined by sculptors, fiber artists, jewelers, photographers, print makers, muralists, furniture makers and even a modern botanical artist and a violin maker. Artists open their studios for the annual Raymond James Stutz Artists Open House for two days in April when thousands of guests stroll through the unique building, visit with artists and purchase their works, and enjoy live entertainment. Artists also open their studios on selected evenings as part of the First Friday Art Tours, sponsored by the Indianapolis Downtown Artists and Dealers Association.

The Stutz Residency Program, sponsored by the SAA, awards two emerging artists with free studio space and utilities for one year. Funding for the program comes from proceeds from the annual Raymond James Stutz Artists Open House in April. Since its inaugural year in 1996, the residency program has provided in-kind contributions of more than $135,000 to 27 local artists.
