IDADA First Friday Art Tour - March 2017

at Downtown Indianapolis

Our Mission:

• Develop public awareness of the artist and art dealer
• Encourage strong continuing community support for the visual arts
• Promote the highest professional standards

IDADA, the Indianapolis Downtown Artists and Dealers Association, is a 501(c)(6) non-profit membership-based organization of artists, art galleries and arts-related businesses within the 20-block radius of the center of Indianapolis. The founders of the IDADA First Friday Art Tour, IDADA’s primary focus is the creation and marketing of unique and original local art.

IDADA is governed by its membership through a Board of Directors, including a President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. All positions and activity are on a volunteer basis.

“Artwork by Israel Solomon”—Artist reception March 3rd from 6–9pm. Influenced by graffiti art, comics, and abstract expressionism, Israel Solomon creates vibrant, colorful, geometric art in a variety of media. Through March 31.

In honor of National Disability Awareness Month, the March exhibit is “Redefining Inspiration”—a collection from the artists in ArtMix programs who redefine disability through their art. In addition, three pieces from the reVISION exhibit will be on display. There will be a free art activity in the ArtMix studio from 7–8:30pm.

Featuring the black & white photography of Tom Potter, Gayle Moore, and Nancy Frass. The artists will exhibit a group of prints that includes new work – light and line of the nude figure, scenes from East to West, and botanicals from all seasons. Also the exquisite dance images by our Feb. guest artist Don Todd continue on display.

Fine Estate is open until 7pm for the March IDADA First Friday. See us before you go to Sun King! We will be presenting the Fine Estate Collection of historic Indiana artwork and works from Gallery Two (which represents ten working, Indiana artists). The combined collections represent 125 years of Hoosier art. On display now: A 30” x 40” T. C. Steele, painted in 1914. Copious food and cheer will be on hand.

Robin Toulouse, “The Right to Peaceful Assemblage” will be featured at FC9, opening March 3rd, 6–9pm.“I want to convey the idea that objects tell stories,” says Toulouse. “The most important lesson I learned working in the artifact collects department at the Children’s Museum for 20 years was the power of objects in our lives. I want to convey that power to my audience.”

Emily Stergar, Stack: A Layering of Elements. The artist draws attention to change in our shared environmental landscape through stacking found objects into sculpture referencing Earth’s layered crust. 50% of proceeds will be donated to the National Park Foundation.

Berkshire, Reese and Paul Galleries: Phyllis Bramson Exhibition and Artist Talk. “Love and Affection in a Hostile World”. The artist discusses her provocative paintings and the enduring themes of love, desire, pleasure and tragedy. The exhibition includes paintings and mixed media work that examines Eastern iconography as constructed in the Western imagination. Through April 15, 2017.
Marsh Gallery: The Virgin Forest Project. C. Thomas Lewis invites audiences to experience the sights and sounds of three Indiana forests through a series of immersive, high-definition films. Through March 25.
Basile Gallery: Freya Powell “Omniscience and Oblivion”. For this sound installation, New York-based artist created an audio archive where participants were invited to anonymously share one memory they would like to keep forever and one they would like to let go. Through March 25.

Held over through June 24: Sarah Hobbs’ photographs of installations which she builds to represent living spaces that involve the human psyche, such as “Prom Forever”, a room with walls clad in gold metallic sheets grounded by the iconic refreshment table typically found at high school proms.

Rapp Family Gallery: “Nature of Art: Indiana’s Painted Parks” features 70 works by artist Rick Wilson including paintings of Indiana’s state parks. The Edinburgh (IN) native spent two years visiting all 24 of Indiana’s state parks—a personal Bicentennial project—capturing their unique character in all four seasons.

“The History of Indianapolis Punk Rock”—The exhibition presents flyers, photographs and historical information from the Indianapolis punk rock scene from 1979 through 1989 in Satch Art Space and the adjacent Stokol Gallery. Indianapolis band, Cheetah Priest, will perform a special show at 9pm. In addition, a special showing will take place on Sunday, March 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (see back panel).

Studio C6: Five Seasons Studio. Mixed media artist Megan Winn creates unique hand bound leather blank books and journals. Winn uses ‘job lot’ reclaimed leather, and hand made paper in India using leftover cotton fibers. Within the Darkness There Is Light. Radial Point artists showcase the things that people take for granted involving light and industrial technology. A myriad of relays, motors & power controllers create a whimsical display. Aspects of artwork transform as light picks up hidden brush strokes and colors change.
