Local writer/artist Lois Main Templeton will discuss her featured paintings in a public art exhibit opening reception Friday, Aug. 19, at Tarkington Tower Condominium. Templeton’s painting career began in San Francisco, continued in the state of Maine “and is always alive and present in Indianapolis,” says the artist who is inspired by music.
“When we left California and came to Indianapolis, I was excited to find Jazz so much part of this city, and my painting responded to its excitement,” Templeton, now age 88, says. “For years I have written song lyrics into my paintings, usually singing as I go.”She says that as a child she explored the marshes and woods of Wisconsin, an experience that continues to be reflected in her works. “Look for cattails,” she adds. Two years of study at the Herron School of Art and Design continue to inform her work as well, Templeton says.
As a writer and a painter, Templeton says she greatly has enjoyed working with artist Phil O’Malley on a children’s picture book, Who makes the Sun Rise. She also published a book on her own, Finding Your Way. She continues to work with Art Mix in their youth program, Something to Crow About. “Now at 88, I still say: Send in the kids,” she adds.
