London-born Piers Secunda graduated from the Chelsea College of Art in 1998. Ever since, Secunda has striven – through the use of paint alone – to create sculptural-like wall pieces that capture the geopolitical nature of our era. A catalyst for Secunda’s oeuvre stemmed from seeing bullets shot at cured paint at a Chinese military base. The resulting bullet holes — beautiful, flower-like conchoidal shatters — seemed to refute the lethal force with which they were made, and became a turning point in Secunda’s practice.
Secunda has gone on to visit war-ravaged parts of the world, taking moulds of bullet holes from recent violence and transposing those moulds into casts of ancient artwork… creating the unsettling impression that the ancient artworks have been riddled with bullet holes. The impact is visceral. Grounded in the belief that the most important thing an artist can do is record the world around him, Secunda’s work is a “carefully crafted record of cultural violence” which “opens a chilling window into the widespread destruction of historical and cultural artwork.”
Please join us on September 7th from 6:30-9:00pm for the opening reception of “Piers Secunda: ISIS Bullet Hole Paintings” to meet the artist and learn more about his work. The opening is sponsored by Conrad Indianapolis.
