Jamila Ali

Performing Arts: Dance

Hips from Hell (Jamila Ali) began dancing in 2004 with Layla Lee & Rada Burn in Chicago after graduating from Columbia College with degrees in Magazine Journalism and Photography. She’s travelled all around the country, training with various belly dance masters – like Suhaila Salimpour, Ansuya, Faten Munger, Zahra Zuhair, Sadie Marquardt and Dina – and dancing in clubs, bars, restaurants and festivals. Jamila’s dance style is a combination of Egyptian, Turkish and Greek styles put into American Cabaret format. When dancing to rock-n-roll, she incorporates all sorts of styles to create a unique fusion of American Cabaret. She began dancing to hard rock and metal when Rada Burns heard her listening to TOOL’s Lateralus. Burns told Jamila that the notes played in most hard rock music are more than 3,000 years old. With this inspiration, Hips from Hell was born and she’s danced with and performed in the same line up with artists like The Yuval Ron Ensemble, Il Troubadore, Ryan Taylor Anderson, Unida, earthlings?, YOB, Weedeater,Black Stone Ritual, Free Smut & This Specific Dream. Jamila currently teaches and performs all over the metro Indianapolis area, with regular monthly appearances at The Greek Islands Restaurant and weekly classes at The Dance Company Indianapolis.

Kathy Allender

Kathy LaChelle Allender began her dance training and performance career within color guard at North Central High School (1994-1995), Lawrence North High School (1995-1996), and Lawrence Central High School (1996-1998), spinning flag, rifle, and saber, and learning ballet and jazz dance. At Lawrence Central, under the direction of Greg Hagen and the late Tod Hinton, Kathy was awarded a plaque in 1998 for “The Most Outstanding Color Guard Member.” In 2002, she received her Bachelor of Arts in French and Associate of Arts in English at Indiana University Bloomington; however, it was being a member of the African American Dance Company (AADC) at IU, under the direction of Iris Rosa, where she discovered a passion equal to studying French – dance. With AADC, she studied jazz, ballet, Horton modern, Afro-Cuban, and contemporary dancing, as well as Mat Pilates. Kathy also studied jazz dance under the instruction of Fred Walton through IU’s Jacobs School of Music, in addition to have taken several ballet classes at the school. She continued her dance training at the Urban Arts Center of Indianapolis where she explored in West African and Middle Eastern dancing, an apprenticeship in L.A. Style salsa at IndySalsa, and beginning ballet at the Jordan Academy of Dance. Kathy also has danced in professional performance companies such as Sancocho Music and Dance Collage, Chatarabaan, The Undefeatable Beats, Nyama Drum and Dance Ensemble, Kenyettá Dance Company,People, Paint, and Percussion, the (Re)Collective Company, and the Nicholas Owens Dance Company. Abroad, Kathy has learned a traditional dance from Mauritius called “Le Sega” of which she choreographed a dance piece that was presented at the 2002 African American Dance Company Spring Concert. The Bloomington Herald-Times wrote “The sense of culture exhibited through the dance was creative and choreographically strong.” During the fall of 2004 in Tunisia, Kathy taught contemporary-jazz to Tunisian students at an English language summer camp sponsored by Bureau de Formation Technologie and Amideast-Tunis through AIESEC International. Kathy has also taken many Master classes from various AADC workshops in Bloomington, IN; the International Association of Blacks in Dance (IABD) conference in Toronto, Canada; and a Professional Summer Intensive program in Chicago, IL through Deeply Rooted. In January of 2007 in Indianapolis, she had the honor of being a judge for the dance category of the Prelude Awards. In 2008, Kathy received her Mat I and Mat II Pilates certifications and her Mat with Props certification in 2009 from PHI Pilates in Monongahela, PA via the Mindful Movement Pilates and Yoga Studio in Indianapolis, IN. PHI trains with a scientific approach to Pilates. Since being certified in Mat Pilates, Kathy has taught at Organic Rhythms Dance Studio, Cityoga, The Earth House, NIFS, and L.A. Fitness. She also has taught “Dance! Pilates for Dancers” in 2008 and 2009 for a Youth In Arts Summer Camp, sponsored both by the Madame Walker Theatre and 100 Black Men, where she additionally set choreography on her students which was performed on the Walker Theatre’s main stage. Kathy has taught as well “Debut: Beginning Mat Pilates” and Intermediate Pilates at Cross Roads Martial Arts, and Beginning Mat Pilates at the Benjamin Harrison YMCA and at the Mapleton Wellness Center. In 2012, Kathy had the fortunate opportunity to set choreography on two models through LModelz, of which they, and Kathy, danced with the Aberdeen Project band as an opening act for the infamous Cameo, The Deele, and Steve Arrington. That following year in August 2013, she participated in the Indy Fringe Festival, choreographed and assisted directing “Harlem Nights Cabaret” with the late lyric pianist and carilloneur William E. Engle of Butler University. Kathy currently teaches Movement classes, Pilates and dance, for a new-model boot camp through LModelz Model Management, is a choreographer for the cultural dance group of the Haitian Association of Indiana, and is a Color Guard Staff member for the Marching Pride of Lawrence Township Band and Guard, teaching dance technique, Pilates, and conditioning.

His upbringing has inspired his creative ability’s to capture the world hardly seen by most, his resilience and persistence to be great has lead him down a path of success in the film world. Saxx Attack is a cinematographer, director, script writer, editor, executive producer, music artist, and painter.

Julie Lyn Barber

Literary Arts; Performing Arts: Actor/Actress, Dance, Music, Theatre, Vocal

Dr. Barber is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Theatre and Dance at Western Kentucky University. She has received IAC grants to perform with the Hot Jazz Preservation Society in Indiana State Parks, and to write and produce a new musical, Indiana Squirrel Stampede and two new children’s plays, The Elves and the Shoemaker and The Frog Prince. She has written many stage adaptations of fairy tales in the British panto style, which have been produced locally at the Minnetrista Faeries Sprites and Lights Festival (Muncie, IN), Nettle Creek Players (Hagerstown, IN) and IndyFringe (Indianapolis, IN). Two of her plays have won inclusion in the juried festival, DivaFest of Indianapolis: the ten-minute fable, Tamlane, and the one-act musical parody, Madwomen’s Late Nite Cabaret. As a stage director, her experience ranges from opera to children’s theatre, directing outreach productions for the Bloomington Early Music Festival of Indiana, and the Marjorie Lawrence Opera Theatre in Carbondale, IL. Other directing credits include Working (American Heritage Theater Project, Portland, OR), Clue: The Musical (Farmland Dinner Theatre, Farmland, IN), and Guys and Dolls (Western Kentucky University, Bowling Green, KY) She has served as music director and choreographer for many schools and theatre companies in Oregon (American Heritage Theater Project, Cathedral School, Valley Catholic High School) and Indiana (Taylor Theatre, Muncie Civic Theatre, Monroe Central High School, Farmland Dinner Theatre), recently music directing Guys and Dolls at the Round Barn Theatre in Nappanee, IN, and choreographing The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee at Western Kentucky University. She is an AEA membership candidate, and has performed the role of “Berenice” in Cabaret Poe every October since 2009 with Q Artistry (Indianapolis, IN). She has played numerous roles in theatre and musical theatre productions in Canada and the United States, including Vancouver B.C.’s Theatre Under the Stars, Portland Oregon’s Northwest Classical Theatre Company, and Portland Center Stage. While in Portland, she co-founded the American Heritage Theater Project.

Kool's Bazaar

Kool’s Bazaar (Kb) is the brainchild of young musical visionary, Richard Trotman and was formed in June of ’08. Kb is an extension of the jazz/fusion semi-cover band, Acoustic Red (aR) and was created out of a need for Trotman to exercise his musical freedom and break away from the constraints and limitations of solely instrumental music. As a creative artistic collective, Kb plays original, stylized fusion music with influences from jazz, blues, neo-soul, hip hop, trip hop, electronica, & acid jazz. Kb is a band that expresses and encompasses the theoretical, emotional, and aesthetic qualities of music, while staying true to its form. Conceptually, Kool’s Bazaar (Kb) is just like any other band. There is a lead vocalist, a keyboardist, bassist, and drummer that makes up its core. However, when you peel back the layers, you find a mix of complex artist(s) who are thoughtful and intentional about the ways in which they create and think about music. Imagine, one unified machine on the outside and when you pry the machine open, you see an abundance of knobs, wires, cords, sockets, and gears all controlled by tiny entities that work in harmony to produce the sound that you hear. Kb engineers sound in such a way that propels the social messages (present in the songs) to a place that can be felt and internalized by the audience. Mac Bellner

Mac Bellner is a professional performer of folk music, focusing on traditional style music of Ireland, Scotland, England, and North America. She was born in a two room, tin roofed shack on a cotton farm in Louisiana and grew up in Mississippi and west Texas, cutting her musical teeth on Stamps-Baxter gospel and spiritual music as well as classic juke box country music. But she discovered her main musical niche in folk music. In addition to solo work, Mac regularly performs with Hogeye Navvy (www.hogeyenavvy.com) Celtic/North American folk band, with whom she has released 9 albums, and is a Teaching Artist with Arts For Learning of Indiana as part of the May Apple duo. In addition to touring in Ireland and Scotland with Hogeye Navvy, Mac has performed throughout the United States, in England, and South Africa. Mac also is a teacher/caller for traditional American barn dance, English country dance, and Irish and Scottish ceilidh dance. She has called dances at festivals, for wedding receptions, and for school, public, church, and Scout events. The dances she calls have involved participants from pre-school age to elderly adults, as well as people with physical challenges. Among her favorite people to teach are those who are beginners and have never experienced traditional dancing before. Her repertoire includes traditional squares and circles, play-party dances, and contra/line set dances, all accompanied by live music. Many of the dances have interesting historical and cultural connections, which Mac shares as she introduces each one.

Jeffrey Bird, Jr.

Jeffrey Bird, Jr. holds an MA in US History from IUPUI and a BA in Theatre and a BA in History from Butler University. Jeffrey grew up dancing in Muncie, Indiana where he trained in tap, jazz, ballet, hip-hop, musical theatre, contemporary, and musical theatre, but now focuses his energies primarily on tap and some hip-hop. Growing up he trained with Gregg Russell, Ryan Lohoff, Mark Goodman, Cory Finn, and Julie Sizemore and has since benefitted from instruction and mentorship from Jenefer Miller, Cindy Hsu, Suzy Guarino-Hall, Sarah Reich, and many others. Jeffrey was an accomplished competitive dancer and now works professionally across the country. He serves as the Artistic Director and Pre-Professional Company Director of the Circle City Tap Company. Since joining the company in 2015, he has performed in various concerts and now directs all their full-scale productions. In addition to his work with CCTC, Jeffrey is also a professional member of Tap24.7 out of Phoenix, Arizona. He has toured the country performing with the company in their shows “TAPspeak” and “Murder at the TAP’ocho,” and has choreographed for two additional shows “The Lyrics MixTAPe” and “TAP X.” His choreography has been featured across the nation both competitively and in professional settings such as with the Circle City Tap Company, Tap24.7, and at Motor City Soles in Detroit. Jeffrey was on faculty at the Circle City Tap Festival in 2017 and taught at TAPapalooza in 2018 (Detroit) and 2019 (Phoenix & Seattle). With over a decade of teaching experience, Jeffrey has worked to take the best of what he has learned from his mentors to create a style that is aerobic and challenging. Jeffrey is also a founding member of Character House Theatre Company in Indianapolis.

Betsy Boxberger

A graduate of the Indianapolis School of Ballet, Betsy Boxberger trained under the direction of Victoria Lyras. At ISB she performed roles such as Raymonda in Raymonda, lead girl in Valse Fantaisie, Odette in Swan Lake; Swanilda and Dawn in Coppelia; and Dew Drop Fairy, Snow Queen, and George Balanchine’s Sugar Plum in The Nutcracker. Betsy earned a double Bachelor of Arts in Dance and Environmental Science and Policy from Duke University where she was instructed by Tyler Walters and Julie Janus Walters. She performed featured roles with the Duke Dance Program, including the lead soloist in Gerald Arpino’s Reflections. She was awarded the Clay Taliaferro Dance Award and the Julia Wray Dance Award by the Duke Dance Program. While in college Betsy taught ballet and pre-ballet at Walltown Children’s Theatre.

What is Quixotic Artistry? It is first and foremost, my brand. It’s whimsy, it’s being able to look failure directly in the eye, and say “f*&# off”, and turn it into success. It’s my past heartbreak, and my feelings of insecurity. Ironically, it is my suit of armour, and my confidence. It is Assemblage, fashion design, makeup artistry, and graphics. It is choreography, it is design. It’s perfect balance. It is the rebirth of my failed attempts at becoming a fashion designer, yet is the new life of a new approach. It is the phoenix, that is rising from the ashes of what I thought to be the end of a journey. Alas, my journey is not over. What is Quixotic | Artistry ? It is whatever that I want it to be, and will be everything that I quixotically dream it to be.

I am a dancer, and have been performing and growing for the past seven years. I perform a style of dance called Krump. Krump means Kingdom Radically Uplifting Mighty Praise. Krump is a storytelling and praise form of dance. My goal with Krump is to show a story and have others feel the emotions and see the story being told. It’s like reading a book, you want to be enthrawled in it, dance is the same way for me.

I believe I am inspired to be creative in mixed media artwork as well as dance in an ‘outsider-style’ format. The creative impulse I receive and the images of what to draw/perform as well as how to do the art come to me organically but most often when I am listening to music and around safe and artistically like-minded people. The majority of what I am influenced to draw is manga-based but I am also activated by the environment around me and the images I see in it. What I do can be considered a sort of performance art because it is most often located randomly and the artistic flow I receive is spontaneous.

Natalie Clevenger

BUTLER BIO Natalie Clevenger is an Indiana native, and began her training as a competition dancer at The Dance Refinery. She was introduced to modern dance at her alma mater, the University of Arizona. Within the triple-track program consisting of jazz, ballet, and modern, Natalie also studied extensively in teaching methods and biomechanics. Throughout her studies, she trained with the Martha Graham School, Limon Dance Company, Oberlin Dance Collective, and Giordano Dance. She learned repertoire including works from Bella Lewitsky, Ohad Naharin, Lar Lubovitch, James Clouser and other UA Dance faculty. Upon graduation, Natalie received the Gertrude Shurr award for excellence in modern dance. Currently, Natalie just finished her third season with Dance Kaleidoscope. At DK, she has intensively studied Graham technique under artistic director David Hochoy. Natalie was featured in works from guest choreographers Brock Clawson, Kiesha Lalama, Andre Megerdichian, Cynthia Pratt and Layla Hazelwood, among works by David Hochoy and Stuart Coleman. Natalie has taught and choreographed for a number of regional studios in the Indianapolis area and southern Arizona. Her choreography credits include working with Dance Kaleidoscope dancers at the Indy Fringe Festival, Spirit and Place, and many student works of varying genres. Recently, Natalie has been granted the Robert D. Beckmann, Jr. Emerging Artist Fellowship of the Arts Council of Indianapolis. Under the fellowship, she is producing her own show, focused on showcasing non-traditional gender roles, and exploring how dance can support members of the LGBTQ+ community through the choreographic process. The show is titled ENIGMA, and it premieres at the District Theatre on August 5th.

Musician Dianna Davis began her career as a classical pianist and clarinetist but has since expanded into styles such as folk, Eastern European, jazz, and improvisation. After experiencing a gypsy band thrill an audience and move them to dance wildly to music, she knew that that’s the kind of music she wanted to play.

Dorsh Deans

Dorsh Deans, better known simply as Dorsh, has spent his entire life traveling the globe and developing a keen understanding of culture and music. Born in America to parents of Jamaican and English descent, Dorsh was exposed at an early age to several sounds not found on Top 40 radio. As he began traveling abroad as a competitive soccer player, the influences of his parents were expanded, and Dorsh quickly became interested in blending sounds from around the world with the reggae, soul, and disco heard at home. While following his dream to become a professional soccer player, Dorsh attended trials with Birmingham City in the English Premiership and with the Jamaican National team in 2008. Unfortunately, during a match at Butler University, he suffered a blow to the head that shattered his face in multiple locations, ruining his soccer dreams forever. However, that tragedy became a blessing in disguise, allowing Dorsh to focus all of his attention and efforts on completing a degree in audio engineering and becoming an extremely proficient sound designer. In the past year, Dorsh has been featured on several top music blogs and radio shows domestically and Internationally. On February 24, 2012 his debut single “Je t’aime”, from the Neopolitan LP, premiered at #10 on Hypem’s popular music charts. A native of Alaska, as a youth D. Del Reverda-Jennings resided in Chicago, Illinois., and was educated in parochial academy institutions. From that timeline, the Indianapolis-based interdisciplinary artist has since traveled a creative and an artistic journey influenced by a kaleidoscope of cultural nuance. Visually D. Del Reverda-Jennings, is known for producing a broad range of work inclusive of sculpture, mixed media, installation, painting, and interdisciplinary roles in the artworld as an award-winning published journalist, arts editor, author and poet. She is the Creator, Founder and Independent Curator of “FLAVA FRESH ! ” an Indianapolis based, Annual Juried, Multiple Exhibition Presentation Series of Contemporary Art. The multicultural series has been an acclaimed visual arts showcase for over twenty-three years, with the seven month long consecutive event venue having received a number of honors and awards. The versatile arts practitioner also works as an administrator, facilitator and free-lances in a number of arts disciplines throughout the Midwest and beyond. As a journalist, regional arts editor and author Del Reverda-Jennings has for over two decades researched, sought out and cultivated aspiring beginners, newly-discovered, emergent and early-career artists who reside and work in Indiana as well as regionally to expose their creativity through writing, photographic documentation and by exhibiting their work in professional commercial arts venues, exposing their creative life stories, events and achievements in Midwestern regional, national and international print and online media. D. Del Reverda-Jennings, has been involved long-term in grass roots arts efforts, the non-profit sector and community service in Indianapolis and is the founder of several groups and organizations. The invested activist and cultural worker is a regional arts grant panelist, adjudicator, a noted lecturer and is currently an Artist Ambassador for the Central Indiana Community Foundation (CICF), and an Equity Ambassador for the Arts Council of Indianapolis. She is widely known for having acquired a well-earned reputation as being driven and making great things happen for underrepresented and/or marginalized artists and continues to be a vital force in the exhibition and scholarship of twenty-first century art.

My art is a visual expression of the emotions and issues reflective of life in relation to music and art. It is full of graphic responses that have been directly inspired through music. Concentrating on the figure and portrait, I make expressive compositions with a variety of images collaged into a complete illustrative thought. Ideas and images manifest themselves through a variety of mediums and materials. My intent is to engage the viewer and cause him/her to connect with aspects of the piece. Sometimes the message is obvious, but when looking again viewers can find a variety of things in the work in which they connect. I create with the purpose of always providing my audience with more than the initial perception.

Vandi Enzor recently moved to the Indianapolis area after graduating with a Master of Music in Vocal Performance from The University of Akron. Prior to pursuing a graduate degree with a focus on opera, Vandi attended Shorter College and graduated with a BFA in Musical Theater and minored in theater and piano. Vandi has performed professionally as a classically trained opera singer, in church and sacred music, as a jazz musician, in musical theater and straight theater, and as a stage combatant. She has done some film, and hopes to continue exploring film more in the future. Vandi has narrated over 40 audiobooks and currently teaches private voice and piano lessons at Meridian Music School in Carmel, Indiana. Vandi enjoys working with sound, lighting, hair and makeup design, in PR, stage managing, and many other technical aspects of live theater. She has been Artistic Director for M3 Theater Camp for the past two years and has written 3 plays. Some of Vandi’s favorite roles have been Gretel in Humperdinck’s Hansel und Gretel, Bastienne in Mozart’s Bastien und Bastienne, Gaby in Romberg and Eysler’s The Blue Paradise, Jill in Bradshaw’s The Worst One Ever, and Penelope in the short film Penelope’s Revenge. Vandi also greatly enjoyed performing at the Vianden International Music Festival in Luxembourg in 2016, at the Crittenden Opera Workshop in Washington DC in 2017, and singing in the world premier of the ballet Snow White and the Magic Mirror. Vandi hopes to continue growing as an artist and performer in the future; her greatest passion is a collaboration of all aspects of the arts and sharing something with the world that connects with people and creates a lasting impact.

Sarah Farnsley

Performing Arts: Dance; Choreography

Sarah is a choreographer, dancer, and passionate dancers’ rights activist. She holds a BFA in Dance Performance from Butler University and an MA in Dance Politics & Sociology from the University of Roehampton in London. Sarah began her dance career in the US, performing with the Louisville Ballet, Ballet Memphis, Chicago Repertory Ballet, Aerial Dance Chicago, Esoteric Dance Project, and Elements Contemporary Ballet. She was a guest artist with Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montreal for 3 years before relocating to London, England. There she performed with English National Ballet at Royal Albert Hall as part of their 2016 Swan Lake production, as well as a season with New English Ballet Theatre. In 2019 she was invited by Édouard Lock to be his rehearsal assistant as he restaged his work Iolanta/The Nutcracker at the Paris Opera Ballet. Her choreographic career started at the age of 17, when her work was selected to appear in the Southeast Regional Ballet Association’s 50th Anniversary Festival. She has gone on to choreograph for Louisville Ballet, Ballet Memphis, and Ballet Theatre of Indiana, where in 2017 she created and co-directed the dance film Absolution. The film premiered at Dances With Films Festival in LA and has appeared at more than a dozen international film festivals, winning awards for Best New Director and Best Experimental Short. During the pandemic, Sarah was selected to be part of the Mayor of London’s Creative Freelancers: Shaping London’s Recovery (CF:SLR) cohort where she led and authored reports for two research groups.

Taylar Green

Taylar began her dance training in Mobile, Alabama at Carol Graham School of Dance. Later she attended Alabama School of Fine Arts as a dance major. She had the opportunity to train under Maria Berica Dalla Vecchia in Vicenza, Italy before relocation to Indianapolis. In 2009, Taylar began her dance journey with GHDT as a student of the Academy. Taylar was also a member of G2, the pre-professional company, for 3 year before graduating from high school in 2012. In the spring of 2016, she graduated from Texas Christian University where she had the opportunity to work with choreographers such as Jacques d’Amboise and Charlotte Boye-Christensen. Taylar is excited to be dancing with GHDT once again. She would like to thank her family and friends for their continued support.
