Shelley Hanmo is an Indianapolis-based freelance illustrator specialized in creating collage art for children’s books, editorial designs and more. She works primarily with hand-cut paper art, watercolor, colored pencils, and digital touch-ups. Before becoming an illustrator, Shelley worked as a professional pianist and music teacher. She received a doctorate degree in music and a master’s degree in arts administration from Indiana University (Bloomington). In parallel with her musical journey, paper art has been her creative outlet for many years. In 2020, Shelley decided to pursue her passion in illustration and launched her art studio Junonia Arts. As a paper collage artist, Shelley loves exploring different possibilities of colors, shapes, layers, and textures in pieces of paper. Besides using paper collage techniques, she also incorporates watercolor, colored pencils, and digital mediums into the final illustrations. Shelley’s artistic inspirations often come from her life experience as a woman of color, immigrant, professional musician, as well as her love for nature and conservation. Therefore, you will find lots of fun characters and quirky stories in her illustrations. Previously, Shelley worked with clients to create children’s book illustrations, editorial designs, promotional illustrations, greeting cards, puzzles, seed packets, and more! In addition, Shelley teaches paper cut art courses and workshops across the US, including Brooklyn Art Library, Indianapolis Zoo, Lotus World Music & Arts Festival, Garfield Park Arts Center, etc, sharing the beauty and quirkiness in hand-cut paper art. Kaila Austin

Kaila Austin is a painter and mixed media artist based out of Indianapolis, Indiana. She has been a participant in Murals for Racial Justice with the Arts Council of Indianapolis and has been interviewed for several magazines emphasizing Black arts and culture across the United States. Currently, she has a painting studio located at 201 Studios, where she also works as a bookbinder and printmaker. Austin works primarily in mixed media portraiture, focusing on the ways in which the arts can humanize Blackness after centuries of visual culture that has been subversive and noxious. Working traditionally in oil portraits, she has spent the last year expanding her work into mixed media loosen the rigidity tied to classical notions of what art is supposed to be. She primarily uses community members from around Indianapolis as the subject of her work, seeking to elevate everyday people and common people to the grandeur of historical narrative paintings.

Michael Baumann is a spoken word artist… … and he has headlined at over 20 local venues, often engaging the community at arts festivals and coffee shops in Indianapolis, with performance poetry that encounters cultural themes such as sexuality, spirituality, sustainability, and their intersections. A former professor in Marian University’s Communication Department, Dr. Baumann recently left this role to pursue art. Now a 2023-2024 Writer in Residence at The Learning Tree, he collaborates on Poetic Justice, an asset-based community development project intended to create a safer, more sustainable environment.

Justin Brown is a multidiscipline contemporary artist and curator. He is a native Hoosier and Cathedral graduate. Justin was an original founder and curator of Future Friends Holographic Magic Club in Fountain Square, IN. He is the founder and executive director of Hoy Polloy Art Gallery at 3125 E. 10th St, Indianapolis, IN. Justin was also the curator and director of Re:Public; a partnership between Indianapolis Contemporary and Hoy Polloy, which closed in April 2020 with the closing of Indianapolis. His visual work focuses primarily on federal and private surveillance data analytics, public and private scientific institutional research, federal and municipal law enforcement investigations, congressional investigation committees, historical documentarian texts, forced perspective, cognitive dissonance, and color theory.

Disabled Indiana author and artist Alys Caviness-Gober began exhibiting and selling artwork in 2012; prior to that, she taught Anthropology at Ball State University. Alys left a PhD program (Applied Linguistics) due to health issues. She is a Juried Artist Member in the Hamilton County Artists’ Association (painting and photography categories), where she served on the Board for many years in various officer positions. Alys founded Logan Street Sanctuary, Inc. (LSS), a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit music, arts, and education venue located in the heart of Noblesville, Indiana, and serves as the LSS Board Secretary. Alys’ paintings, photographs, and poetry have received national and international recognition.

I am an artist, a yoga teacher, and a student. I came to art as a way to express myself, enter a flow state, and heal. I teach yoga for the same reasons. I provide a space for my students to heal themselves and get into that flow state, us artists love. In my work I love to explore different levels of consciousness or reality, emotions, and my perspective on life. I enjoy creating works around the concepts behind life, energy, the soul, and my life experiences (present and past). Oil is the medium I love but I also enjoy ceramics. I love to write about my life in my blog and someday hope to take my writing more professionally, as well as my artist career.

A native of Alaska, as a youth D. Del Reverda-Jennings resided in Chicago, Illinois., and was educated in parochial academy institutions. From that timeline, the Indianapolis-based interdisciplinary artist has since traveled a creative and an artistic journey influenced by a kaleidoscope of cultural nuance. Visually D. Del Reverda-Jennings, is known for producing a broad range of work inclusive of sculpture, mixed media, installation, painting, and interdisciplinary roles in the artworld as an award-winning published journalist, arts editor, author and poet. She is the Creator, Founder and Independent Curator of “FLAVA FRESH ! ” an Indianapolis based, Annual Juried, Multiple Exhibition Presentation Series of Contemporary Art. The multicultural series has been an acclaimed visual arts showcase for over twenty-three years, with the seven month long consecutive event venue having received a number of honors and awards. The versatile arts practitioner also works as an administrator, facilitator and free-lances in a number of arts disciplines throughout the Midwest and beyond. As a journalist, regional arts editor and author Del Reverda-Jennings has for over two decades researched, sought out and cultivated aspiring beginners, newly-discovered, emergent and early-career artists who reside and work in Indiana as well as regionally to expose their creativity through writing, photographic documentation and by exhibiting their work in professional commercial arts venues, exposing their creative life stories, events and achievements in Midwestern regional, national and international print and online media. D. Del Reverda-Jennings, has been involved long-term in grass roots arts efforts, the non-profit sector and community service in Indianapolis and is the founder of several groups and organizations. The invested activist and cultural worker is a regional arts grant panelist, adjudicator, a noted lecturer and is currently an Artist Ambassador for the Central Indiana Community Foundation (CICF), and an Equity Ambassador for the Arts Council of Indianapolis. She is widely known for having acquired a well-earned reputation as being driven and making great things happen for underrepresented and/or marginalized artists and continues to be a vital force in the exhibition and scholarship of twenty-first century art.

Jarrod Dortch

Dr. Jarrod Nicholas Dortch is part of a movement of Black artists and curators who are hosting exhibits and creating work that shines a light on Black culture. He has been affiliated with Big Car as a community artist and as community gardener at the Tube Factory artspace. Dortch serves as both a professor of communication and a business owner. He owns and operates Solful Gardens, a natural produce provider in Central Indiana that brings quality food access to urban areas that are underserved with an overall focus on food equity. With their roots in art, community, and education, Solful Gardens is leveraging these disciplines to help promote personal and communal growth one naturally-grown-vegetable at a time.

Drema Drudge

Drema Drudge is a 2013 graduate of the Spalding MFA in Creative Writing Program. She’s represented by Lisa Gallagher of Defiore and Company Literary Agency, based in Manhattan’s Union Square. In addition to being published in numerous literary journals (The Louisville Review, Penumbra, and others), Drema has finished two novels and is beginning her third. She often writes about art, the second passion in her life after writing. Drema has had the honor to have her stories published in the premiere issues of three magazines. She has won several small writing competitions over the years, the first one when she was in high school. She has been mentored both officially and unofficially by some of the best literary fiction writers in the country. M. A. Dubbs

M. A. Dubbs is an award-winning Mexican American and LGBT+ writer who hails from Indiana. Dubbs writes poetry, flash fiction, and interactive/visual media. For more than a decade her writing has been published in literary magazines and anthologies across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia. She published her first collection of her poetry and short fiction titled Aerodynamic Drag: Poetry and Short Fiction (2021). Her poetry has been archived in Indiana’s Poetry Archive (INverse) and she served as judge for the 2022 Poetry Out Loud’s state competition. Dubbs has performed in several live and virtual readings including being a featured author for both Poets Laureate of Lawrence and Poetry on Brick Street. She also performed at the 2021 Grand Opening of Fort Ben’s Culture Campus. Dubbs lives with her husband, twin girls, cat, and dog and enjoys hiking, gardening, running, mushroom foraging, video games and watching 90s magical girl anime.

I am a creative individual by nature. Academically trained in research and writing as an historian, I am also a self-taught portrait painter, illustrator, and mixed-media artist.I am as passionate about art as I am about American history. My historical and political essays have appeared on numerous new media publications and on my personal BLOG. Indeed, I have found that I must actively write about history and create art or fail at both. Creating art allows me another avenue to express myself and gives me the much-needed balance after the intensity required for conducting research and writing about history. My express desire is to produce art that I feel most connected to and one that is meaningful to others.I enjoy working with various mediums. Watercolors, acrylics, charcoal, graphite, mixed media, and ink are all favorites and often used in my paintings and illustrations. My art represents American history, classic literature, and events from the Bible. Art critics have categorized my work in line with Kahlo. I credit Copley, Rousseau, and Gauguin as the providers of my “academic” training in art.I just finished illustrating Benjamin Franklin’s Poor Richard’s Almanack and publishing the two volumes from my A Little Book of Revolutionary Quotes series. I am now working on illustrating classics, painting moments in American history, producing a new line of mixed-media stationery, researching and writing about the founding generation, and teaching kids about America’s Founding Documents. Trehan’s Treasures is the name of my studio and represents all my art, illustrations and writings.

Chris Forhan

Chris Forhan is the author of the memoir My Father Before Me as well as three books of poetry: Black Leapt In, winner of the Barrow Street Press Poetry Prize; The Actual Moon, The Actual Stars, winner of the Morse Poetry Prize and a Washington State Book Award; and Forgive Us Our Happiness, winner of the Bakeless Prize. He is also the author of three chapbooks, Ransack and Dance, x, and Crumbs of Bread, and his poems have appeared in Poetry, Paris Review, Ploughshares, New England Review, Parnassus, Georgia Review, Field, and other magazines, as well as in The Best American Poetry. He has won a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship and two Pushcart Prizes, has earned a “Discover Great New Writers” selection from Barnes and Noble, and has been a resident at Yaddo and a fellow at Bread Loaf. He was born and raised in Seattle and lives with his wife, the poet Alessandra Lynch, and their two sons, Milo and Oliver, in Indianapolis, where he teaches at Butler University.

Mary Gillot is a writer, artist, and illustrator living in Indianapolis. She has also lived in San Diego, Nashville, and Portland, and is originally from Washington, DC. Growing up with parents who were passionate about art, and traveling throughout the United States and Mexico have uniquely colored her creative vision. She received her Associate of Arts from the University of Maryland and her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drawing and Illustration from the Herron School of Art and Design at Indiana University. Her work has appeared in Genesis Magazine, Tributaries Magazine, The Tipton Poetry Journal, and Prick of the Spindle, in addition to books from Crown Publishing Group, Wiley Publishing, Compass Learning, and many others. She is the author and illustrator of three children’s books available through Amazon and Barnes & Noble. She will finish a third book this year.

Angelita Hampton

My main creative work is as a mixed media artist. In the styles of contemporary expressionism or surrealism, I primarily treat subjects of social justice, employing imagery and text, while combining digital paint with hand drawn paper sketches, photography, watercolors, and collage. I enjoy the process of creation through experimentation and layering, and prefer producing prints created as a series of the same base image, reimagined in a variety of expressions, as part of an examination of the concepts of wholeness and separateness. I create art designed to challenge perceptions of race, gender, sexuality and social status through black portraiture and female figure in conjunction with popular images and ideology from American history and Black culture. A large portion of my work is created as public art, which I describe as being in a style of protest posters, designed with the intended effect of empowerment and the issue of a call to action. I often use traditional colors of American red, white, and blue, juxtaposed with images of brown and black people and images of social injustice. I also create using warm and rich earth tones with bright yellow and orange accents, as well as art with vibrant pinks, blues and greens.

Her poetry focuses on everyday life, working from a point where reality and imagination merge. She uses imagery to reinforce that convergence. The poems of Koons will deal with the realities of everyday life. They are accesible and forthright. A common theme concerns the connections between generations and the multiple roles everth family member plays as they weave past and present together in the course of their lives. Reviewer Andrew Madigan has desribed her work as “clear, unpretentious, evocative, and packed with real life. It’s visceral, not ethereal.”

The majority of what I put on canvas has mixed media, texture, full of life and color, allowing an exciting viewing experience for all audiences. I have a strong work ethic and still value organization, uniform, consistency, and being prompt as well as prepared. Allison is the author of the novels The Exiles (Little A / Houghton Mifflin Harcourt) andNow You See It (Simon & Schuster), which won the William Faulkner Medal from the Pirate’s Alley Faulkner Society and the Chapter One Award from the Bronx Center for the Arts. In addition to fiction, Allison has written articles, reviews, and essays for The New York Times Book Review, People, Chicago Sun-Times, Redbook, In Style, and elsewhere. As an editor, she’s honed copy for companies that include Zagat Survey and Scholastic. She’s lectured and read from her work in venues across the country, and loves nothing more than visiting book clubs. Especially book clubs that serve wine. Though beer is fine, too. And what the heck, cake.
