I am a retired gentleman who has always been artistic and creative, but in the past 2-3 years, I have developed a technique to create unique works of art on glass that has been well received at art fairs and through various open houses, resulting in purchases and enthusiastic patrons. I am seeking to expand my exposure. I am not savvy with technology, so I rely on a friend for email communications, Facebook posts, etc. Her name is Marcia Wirt, and she will be happy to assist with communications. I was born in Kendallville, IN, in 1983. I studied sculpture and woodworking at Ball State University with Kenton Hall and Pat Nelson. Throughout my undergraduate career, I developed a love for sculpture and woodworking that has grown into a life-long interest. I graduated from Ball State University in Muncie, IN with a Bachelor of Fine Art in Sculpture in 2006. I am continuously honing my skills and learning new techniques to incorporate into my art as my artistic career progresses. I currently live in Indianapolis, IN, with my wife and son, Becky and Oliver. My work has been shown in some group shows and juried exhibitions. My current series began with my undergraduate thesis but has continued to change and grow as I discover new techniques and take inspiration from new sources. The freedom and simplicity that working with wood allows me has created a turning point in my artistic career. My work incorporates elements of the human figure into functional furniture while using an innovative wood-inlay technique. My works do not depict the figure as a whole, but often take inspiration from smaller parts of the body that are then abstracted and simplified. I utilize aspects of wood itself, such as wood grain, to emphasize figurative elements within each sculpture. My designs are influenced by modern and contemporary styles but I use traditional woodworking techniques to create my art. My personal life experiences inform a great deal of the content and concepts of my art. The human experience has always fascinated me – whether these experiences are had within the context of our natural environment, the landscape of our internal minds, or within the context of other humans. Who and what humanity is and how we as humans identify ourselves is also a question that many of my works address. I also explore the many ups and downs that are experienced in the physical, mental, and spiritual realms as creatures living and present within the world. Much of the imagery I use has focused on the human figure due to reflecting on the concepts of the human identity and what it means to be human. This ideology evolves into questioning individual identity as it pertains to the self and how the self is expressed within society and culture. The imposed identities that are experienced on an individual level as well as the compulsory identities that individuals may be given by society are reflected and explored within my work. As a gay man growing up in conservative areas, I have known this type of experience first-hand and seek to identify and expose the various identities I see given to individuals through my work. Although some of my pieces explore the darker side of the human experience, I also believe that this experience is one of wonder and whimsy often fraught with confusion and misunderstanding. Having worked in the communications industry in customer service for the last thirteen years, often times my pieces illustrate a misunderstanding or miscommunication that might be experienced when communicating an idea from one mind to another.

Matt Kenyon’s Artist Statement I feel a wonderful connection to the entire process of making art whether it is working in glass, wood, metal or any other medium. I have been putting things together and creating from a young age and have always had a passion for the construction of objects. Each piece that I create allows me to express a bit of my personality or imagination. I steadily try to keep my work contemporary and fresh. Glass is a medium that provides me endless opportunity to create, learn and teach. Glass does not have very many limits in itself. The substance, an outwardly privative, slow-moving molten liquid, is capable of being formed and molded with not much more than air, a wet newspaper and an inspired mind. I am drawn to it mainly because of the creative process itself. The infinite variations of color, depth and texture – along with any shape my imagination can envision – are just a few reasons why I like working with glass over any other medium. The beginning of a form always starts the same way on an empty blowpipe, like an empty canvas for a painter. Each piece depends on my timing, balance and control. I especially like the fluidity and adaptability of molten glass. When I decide a piece is finished, I let it freeze. What had started as a dynamic fluid molten goo is now beautifully frozen in time. When I create my furniture, I try to pair up the wood with the glass so that complementary synthesis is achieved. The two mediums have very different qualities, and I am constantly trying to blend one with the other to achieve a fluid balance. Synthesis between the two mediums is also attained through the use of color and medium characteristics. The personalities of each medium bring unique challenges that must be overcome. The process I follow bridges the gap to achieve harmony. Understanding the balance between mediums, I aim to create this beautiful synthesis. Matt Kenyon’s Bio Kenyon received his BFA in Furniture Design from Herron School of Art in 2008. He has actively blowing glass at the Art Center for since 1998. Hi is an instructor at the Indianapolis Art Center as well as the department head of the glass studio. He enjoys incorporating mixed media into his work including mainly focusing on glass with components of other mediums. He has had a studio at the Harrison Center since 2009 and has created a portable glass studio to take anywhere to do demos or classes.

I am a Glass Artist and the Sole Proprietor of Glass Utopia in Indianapolis. Beginning with traditional stained glass in the mid-1990’s, I have been able to expand my repertoire to include fusing, flame-working, glass casting, hot glass manipulation and glass blowing -creating a unique variety of glass items. I am blessed to discover my artistic passion and to experience many facets of this limitless medium. At the present time, I would have to say that the glass-blowing aspect of my art is the most fun and exciting. I’ve been able to be the “Girl with the Torch” at shows and parties, and I love it!

Nicole Krajewski is an artist, illustrator, and fashion designer. She designs a fair-trade brand of clothing called BYTAVI, which is sold all over the USA, Canada, and Australia. As a child, her favorite things were a fresh box of crayons and a stack of blank paper. When her children were young, Nicole worked as a muralist and artist for a home decor company. Currently, she is illustrating her second book. Nicole lives in Indianapolis with her husband Jeff, and her dog, Lewis. They have two adult children, one daughter-in-law, and one grand-dog. Nicole and Jeff love to travel, cook, and entertain their friends and family in the kitchen.

Jamie Locke

Jamie Locke is best known for her intricate hand-carved mandalas on wood, metal, glass and leather. A self-taught artist, Jamie is adept at taking a vision and turning it into reality. Her strength is in her hunger for creating, and exploring different methods and mediums, always bearing in mind that in the creative process the vision sometimes evolves into something completely unexpected. “For me, the process of creating a mandala is always one of inspired revelation, elemental surprise, and pure bliss.” Locke’s work can also be found around Indianapolis through a series of public art projects such as The Harmony Mural, featuring her mandala designs along the Monon Trail, the #IndyAngelWings Project, a collaborative mural project with artist Megan Jefferson and most recently the Indy Art and Seek Project. Whether she is carving, drawing or painting, her desire is to always breathe positivity into the world and hopes that her creations will inspire, encourage and uplift. Art quilts are my passion. They combine color, texture and design together. My designs are original or reworked traditional. I love color and my work clearly shows that. In addition, I love adding a layer of texture, such as three-dimensional pieces. Most of the time, I start the process with a design in my head which I put down on paper. I then pull fabrics and start cutting and sewing. Lots of times my draft is not even close to what I actually made but it is still part of the process. Sometimes I see a fabric and it serves as the jumping off point for the piece of art. I am a Professional Engineer and many of the tools that I learned how to use are ones that I use on a regular basis. These include French curves, a compass and graph paper. The challenge becomes how to translate the design to fabric. Fortunately I am not hindered by the fear of mistakes. It is all part of the process. Sometimes those mistakes become the perfect feature of a piece.

My goal as a potter is to create functional, well designed pieces that are inviting to use in everyday life, yet are unique, one-of-a-kind originals that the purchasers will be proud to display in their homes and collections. I am inspired by pottery from ancient civilizations and I contemplate how the pots fit into the framework of their lives. I am especially excited if I can identify fingermarks left by the maker generations ago. I am proud to continue that craft in this era of mass production, and I strive to leave an imprint of my own touch or gesture in the clay in the making process. For me, the search for harmony of form, color and function is an ongoing journey and my work is continually evolving.

My unique perspective comes from being brought up in both rural and urban environments, as well as, being surrounded by diverse people all along the way. I first learned sewing and handcrafts from shadowing my grandmother, then honed my skills by earning a BA in Fashion Design from Kent State University. After supplemental coursework in Visual Communication in 2017, I branched out into the digital media world and also began the journey to my MBA that same year. Now, with my MBA in hand, I am working towards building my brand in a more purposeful and long-lasting way. From custom apparel and costume designs for individuals and troupes alike to graphic design services for businesses large and small, I enjoy the variety and fun that all freelance projects bring.
