    Ladan Abbaspour
Middle Eastern/North African; Visual Arts: Middle Eastern/North African, Mixed Media, Painting, Visual Arts; Abstract Artist
From an early age, I have always loved and appreciated art and wanted to create my own paintings. Born and raised in Iran, I pursued a degree in Chemistry, but I was always painting in my free time. Painting has been my passion as well as my form of therapy enabling me to express my feelings and transfer them onto canvas. I love to create different types of textures in my paintings, and I’m typically drawn to using bright colors. I work mainly with acrylics, watercolor, and also enjoy creating abstract paintings used in mixed media.I live in Fishers with my family. We love to travel so from the Middle East to Europe to Africa, our travels have given me the opportunity to see different sceneries and to use this inspiration in my own work. Nature itself inspires many of my paintings,Natural landscapes help me visualize new shapes and colors, and I love to capture light in different angles.I use my imagination to give the viewer a new way to appreciate nature through my art.

Creating art is directly related to the way I process life events and my spiritual journey. I work in various 2D mediums as well as making artist books. I love printmaking, painting, drawing and mixed media creating. If I am trying to answer a philosophical or emotional question for myself, I know that if I go to my studio and get busy, I will find the answer I am looking for.

Nobody Can Tell Me What To Do, Not Even Me! There are neither good nor bad subjects. From the point of view of pure Art, you could almost establish it as an axiom that the subject is irrelevant, style itself being an absolute manner of seeing things. Of all lies, art is the least untrue. Anything becomes interesting if you look at it long enough. Gustave Flaubert My name is Gersh and I’m a self-taught well-published Professional Photographer, Artist, Sci-fi & How-To Professional Photography & How-To Art Writer & Designer. I started drawing and painting when I was 3 and the first time I had my photography work published was when I was a very young child. I have never gone to school to study art, writing, design and/or photography, nor have I had anyone teaching me any of the said disciplines. My art work comprises of a very large collection of black and white and color images which have been created by me in various styles, some of which are surrealism, realism, impressionism and other well-known artistic expressions, in addition to those which have been pioneered by me. What sets me apart from all other artists, is not only a distinct style of my work, but also the fact that I work in almost each and every medium and genre and pioneer my own genres. A large portion of my work are storyboards and illustration for books written by me, nevertheless there are also images which are not a part of any project. They say that every image is worth a thousand words and that every image is a story. My art speaks for itself and I’m not here to describe it, because if my images couldn’t speak for themselves and could not tell stories, they wouldn’t be worth of even looking at them, needless speaking of being published and admired by people. My art is not only a product of my knowledge, imagination, but is also a result of experiences achieved through the exploration of various mediums. From pen and Indian ink, charcoal, markers, oil, graphite, acrylics to less known materials, some of which have been created by me. Despite what has been said, I do not stick with any particular style, but on contrary remain a free explorer of various mediums and styles, which leaves me free not to be told what to do, not even by me, but to remain free in my exploration of the ways and choices to achieve an absolute paramount in my artistic-expression!

    Kaila Austin
Artist of Color; Black/African American; Literary Arts; Portrait; Visual Arts: Artist of Color, Black/African American, Literary Arts, Mixed Media, Murals, Painting, Portrait, Portrait, Visual Arts, Visual Arts Instructor, Works on paper
Kaila Austin is a painter and mixed media artist based out of Indianapolis, Indiana. She has been a participant in Murals for Racial Justice with the Arts Council of Indianapolis and has been interviewed for several magazines emphasizing Black arts and culture across the United States. Currently, she has a painting studio located at 201 Studios, where she also works as a bookbinder and printmaker.    Austin works primarily in mixed media portraiture, focusing on the ways in which the arts can humanize Blackness after centuries of visual culture that has been subversive and noxious. Working traditionally in oil portraits, she has spent the last year expanding her work into mixed media loosen the rigidity tied to classical notions of what art is supposed to be.  She primarily uses community members from around Indianapolis as the subject of her work, seeking to elevate everyday people and common people to the grandeur of historical narrative paintings.

Marissa Ballesteros is an artist currently living in Indianapolis, Indiana. She attended Herron School of Art and Design and will graduate in December 2018 with a BFA in Drawing and Illustration. In May 2018, she had her first group exhibition at the Garfield Park Arts Center. The theme of the exhibition was adventures, and she created concept art based on an original story. The pieces comprised of three characters and three environments from that story. Moving forward, she is interested in creating concept art. She wants to explore how she can create original characters and environments that are engaging, dynamic, and unique. Her influences vary: fantasy books such as Harry Potter and A Game of Thrones, Greek and Egyptian mythology, historical figures, and illustrators such as Arthur Rackham, Lois van Baarle, and Wylie Beckert. Additionally, she wants to create original works that comment on issues pertaining to contemporary society through a fantastical point of view. She works in traditional and digital media. Her current goals include working on concept art for companies involved in film, video games, and animation and having original pieces shown in galleries.

The process of my technique is that of obscuring images through a multitude of painted and varnished surfaces, collage materials and layers. The image is destroyed, obscured and then reactivated, thus suggesting the cycle and eroding power of time. I am unconcerned about the explanation or easily extracted meaning of my work. By not being immediately understandable, the content forces the viewer to participate in deciphering meaning for themselves. Thus this way of seeing the act of creating has allowed my work to come to a place that does not simply deal with the reconstruction of an object for its own sake, but rather the mystifying and abstracting of personal meaning and symbolism.

I first came to Indiana through the U.S. Army. I was stationed at Ft. Harrison teaching Television Graphics and Audio Visual Techniques to public relations students at the Defense Information School.  While there, I also became the painting and drawing instructor for the Harrison Arts and Craft Center.  During this time, I also became the illustrator and designer for a couple of post publications and my graphic arts career continued as I chose to remain in Indiana after my military service.  From 1973 to 2006, I have held positions as illustrator, designer, screen printer, freelance artist, and art instructor, all while raising a family of five girls with my wonderful wife.  I am currently doing commission work and limited edition prints of my art through my own marketing name I call Limited Expressions.  Much of my inspiration comes from personal experiences with family and friends out of an expression of love and caring for those individuals, which I try to convey through my commission work as well.

My art is about oppositional forces. A combination of the real and the surreal comprise the subjects and settings of my work. I work in both painterly and draughtsman-like techniques, and use these seemingly contrasting approaches to lend visual tension to each piece. Finished pieces tend to still appear raw and uncompromising, as I try to show the thought processes and hypotheses that I’ve struggled with throughout the piece, presenting the research as the finished product. I view the piece as a working equation, as my thought processes and experimentation combined to create a visual solution. By utilizing internal conflict, juxtaposing medium, scale, and subject, I force the viewer to not only view, but to think. By contrasting scale within one particular piece, I’ve taken a subtle surface of an everyday object and transformed it into the environment of a distant and alien world. In another piece, I’ve reinvented a classic religious motif and icon for modern times. In my work, I like to leave the viewer with more questions than answers, which keeps the work fresh and intriguing, inspiring a unique outlook from each viewer. Most recently, exploring the ideas of transhumanism and technological progress has come to the forefront of my work. I draw inspiration from these elements, and form artwork for a technologically obsessed modern society, progressing and multiplying at breakneck speed.

The circle element is constant in my work, it is a representative of the never ending cycle of life that we all experience. Taking a serendipitous approach by utilizing this spherical element allows me to experiment with color and movement to represent this sacred mark as a whole. Strong intentional movement creates a muscular tension reminiscent of the sacred spirals found in architecture, forests, and religious and spiritual entities throughout time.   Fabric as a medium has always been a strong voice in my work. Utilizing hand dyed fabrics or batiks combined with polymers allows for a depth to become luminescent. Color, emotion, and movement play intuitively in my creations.   My current series, “Tempest”, explores the churning, the unknown, the continuous cycle of movement and the culmination of color and textures to create a balance of emotion, movement and beauty in the upheaval that storms of all kinds can bring.

Artist Statement: Intuition is a guiding hand in my decision making process, from color schemes to composition and subject matter. I draw how I feel, and hidden meaning often lurks behind surfaces of oil paint, charcoal, graphite, and other various media. My hands are often my main instrument, bridging the intimate connection between maker and creation. Each work fluctuates in style, just as my day to day mood and demeanor do. My art is a refusal to remain stagnant; each piece a subconscious megaphone for my feelings, coupling dull colors with vibrant, intense hues. There is intention in each movement– even chaos can be calculated.
