Visual Arts: Mixed Media, Painting, Sculpture
Art gets me out of bed in the morning. Each work begins with the question “What if?”, and then the adventure begins. I studied art at John Herron and Indiana University. Most of my art that is one composition by day and another by night because I incorporate photoluminescent minerals that absorb any visible light and then shed it for 8+ hours when the lights go out. I’ve had South Studio B17,  in the CCIC in Indianapolis since 2016- Open First Fridays 6-9 PM, or by appointment: 812-679-7422

As in my life, my approach to teaching is rooted in taking risks. I model a curious and investigative life, which can empower students to do the same.  My aim is always to inspire students to become better makers and thinkers with capacities to work critically.  I create space for artists of marginalized identities and histories of resistance. I encourage my students to see themselves as contributors to the larger conversations of their world and times, as reflected in art.  Perhaps a greater testament to my dedication has been volunteer work in communities searching for art’s accessible intersections with real lives lived; a summer in rural Cambodia working with school aged children, drawing on their problem solving abilities, a survival skill learnt in a developing country, beholding one another and making visual evidence of shared identity in tandem.  We celebrated strange questions and idiosyncratic obsessions, which provoked fruitful and surprising responses. Reaching out, folding in, celebrating abundance.

Just a young artist trying all the things. Born and raised in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. I went to Hendrix College and graduated in May 2020 with my art degree. I moved to Indianapolis in February 2020. I currently have my art for sale at a local business: Relics Redesigned. You should definitely look them up. The ladies who own the business have been incredibly helpful to me by hosting my art in their shop, as well as, helping me find my way around Indy and make it a home.

I am a wearer of many hats: an independent early American historian, self-taught artist, freelance writer, blogger, author, biographer, designer, small budget business owner, and serial entrepreneur. But I am simply a creative individual, trying my best to live the creative life. I am the Founder of Trehan’s Treasures Studio (www.trehanstreasures.com) where I create and through which I share my art and writings. Samples of my works can be seen on my Pinterest boards (trehanstreasures) with over 3,200 followers. My books are available through Amazon.com, IU Press, and in bookstores everywhere. My articles related to art, history, small business, self-publishing, writing, home decor, and crafting can be found on various print and online magazines including American History magazine, Journal of the American Revolution, American Farmhouse Style magazine, PieceWork magazine, The Old Schoolhouse magazine, Illinois Heritage magazine, Hoosier Heritage magazine, Red Rock magazine, MollyGreen.com, and more. I have become a nationally recognized speaker from being featured on numerous podcasts and shows including NPR PBS WFYI Channel Indianapolis, Axelbank History Today Podcast, History Ago Go Podcast, Thought Row Podcast, The Alexander Hamilton Awareness Society Book Club, and Greg Garrison Radio Show – WIBC Radio Indianapolis. I have also presented lectures on early American history as a featured speaker at various groups and organizations in the USA. My art has been published internationally and my handmade journals are owned by collectors around the globe. When I am not writing, painting, or designing, I am also the co-Founder of Dream Works Furnishings, a home décor manufacturing company specializing in rustic and bohemian themed home decor products, based out of a joint USA and India venture. I am currently open to commissions for art and writing projects. Please contact me to discuss your options. Thank you!

I use discarded furniture, tablecloths, and upholstery from domestic spaces as my materials to construct sculptural work whose materiality references interior space while the form evokes the surrounding environment. I seek to create an emotional landscape that is not bound by the delineations of what belongs inside or what belongs outside, but rather to incorporate the materials in ways a child might when building their own world. Manifestations of longing and futility, the pieces reach or over grow, letting the viewer experience and imagine the everyday objects of home in an unfamiliar way.

The Tree Lady is who I am. I am a woman who loves life, family, traveling, sunsets, sunrises, hiking, walking in the rain, the beach, many other things & . . . TREES !!! TREES !!! TREES !!! In 2011 I began painting, drawing, sketching trees on tshirts and then moved on to creating TreeLady blank greeting cards. There’s nothing like receiving a card someone took the time to find, purchase, write a line or two and mail. It tends to bring a huge smile I climbed trees often as a child and found peace there. Trees are like arms reaching for the sky; or branches, embracing us, protecting us. Trees don’t judge us. Trees give us peace. I love sitting under a tree or sitting on a branch up in a tree, just being ! I still climb trees when the opportunity presents itself. Hug a tree, it’s pretty cool. A tree will never betray your trust and always keep your secrets. If you listen closely a tree will speak to you. My Moms dementia brought me back here to Indy, where I was raised. During 2020, trees gave me a new journey, filled with gratitude and grace. Nothing was moving, however everything was blooming, growing and beautiful, even though death was all around, up close, personal and downright terrifying. I found grace, I found gratitude, I found beauty in that leaf I saw transform, change color and start again. I construct, draw and paint trees. I pour tons of love into my canvasses and you feel the love, spirit and roots of life. My goal : your eyes see the beauty, your heart fills with love and your spirit is full of gratitude for the beauty of the moment.

I am a Queer and Trans artist interested in dismantling colonialist and patriarchal ideals of fine art by exploring and blurring the boundaries of Queer Aesthetics, Fine Art, and Low Art/Craft. By intentionally making art that is accessible to people who are not wealthy art collectors, I seek to empower myself and other marginalized artists as not only the creators, but also as the consumers.
