Vienna Bottomley

Literary Arts

Vienna Bottomley earned a B.A. in English with Creative Writing and Theology from the University of Notre Dame where she served as a poetry editor for the literary magazine, Re: Visions, and as an undergraduate publishing intern for the journal, Religion and Literature. Vienna just completed coursework for a Master’s in English degree from Notre Dame and is second-year law student law student at Notre Dame law school where she serves as a staff editor for the Notre Dame Law Review. Her poetry primarily reflects her interests in history, wildlife preservation, religious liberty, and social justice. Her poem “Art with a Heart” appears on Massachusetts Ave., as part of the Indianapolis Cultural Trail.

Tony Brewer

I’m a poet, spoken word performer, live sound effects/foley artist, and event producer. I am treasurer of the Writers Guild at Bloomington and executive director of the Spoken Word Stage at the 4th Street Arts Festival. I have been twice nominated for a Pushcart Prize and I have been a regular reader for the programs Books Unbound on WFHB community radio and Anthology on WFIU public radio. I’ve published several books of poetry — The Great American Scapegoat (2006), Little Glove in a Big Hand (2010), Hot Type Cold Read (2013), Homunculus (2019), The History of Projectiles (2021), Tabletop Anxieties & Sweet Decay (with Tim Heerdink, 2021), Pity For Sale (Gasconade Press, 2022), and psithurism (Last Lights Press) — and I have work in the anthologies Haiku for Hikers (2021), Leave Them Something (2021), The Notes Will Carry Me Home: Writings On Music from Evansville and the Tri-State (2021), Death By Punk (2021), Writers Resist: Hoosier Writers Unite (2017), And Know This Place: Poetry of Indiana (2011), A Linen Weave of Bloomington Poets (2002), and others. By day, I’m a graphic designer and composition coordinator at Indiana University Press. As a sound effects/foley artist, I have taught, directed, and performed sound effects for the National Audio Theatre Festivals in Missouri since 2001, and I’ve performed and written for WFHB’s Firehouse Follies live variety show in Bloomington since 2008. In 1994, I made Hayward Sanitarium, a horror thriller audio series I directed and produced for NPR Playhouse. Since then I’ve taught at Indiana University, Michigan University, and Kansas City Art Institute, and have performed with the Knoxville Opera, Otherworld Media, Mind’s Ear Audio Productions, and many others, from studio work to costumed live theatre. Over the years, I have produced or co-produced and collaborated on dozens of live performances and events in Bloomington, Indianapolis, and around the country, including Va-Va-Va Vaudeville!, WFHB Firehouse Follies live variety show, Krampus Night Bloomington, and The Encyclopedia Show-Indianapolis. I also collaborate and play live sound effects with various musicians in the Urban Deer Record Co. collective in Bloomington.

Justin Brown is a multidiscipline contemporary artist and curator. He is a native Hoosier and Cathedral graduate. Justin was an original founder and curator of Future Friends Holographic Magic Club in Fountain Square, IN. He is the founder and executive director of Hoy Polloy Art Gallery at 3125 E. 10th St, Indianapolis, IN. Justin was also the curator and director of Re:Public; a partnership between Indianapolis Contemporary and Hoy Polloy, which closed in April 2020 with the closing of Indianapolis. His visual work focuses primarily on federal and private surveillance data analytics, public and private scientific institutional research, federal and municipal law enforcement investigations, congressional investigation committees, historical documentarian texts, forced perspective, cognitive dissonance, and color theory.

Disabled Indiana author and artist Alys Caviness-Gober began exhibiting and selling artwork in 2012; prior to that, she taught Anthropology at Ball State University. Alys left a PhD program (Applied Linguistics) due to health issues. She is a Juried Artist Member in the Hamilton County Artists’ Association (painting and photography categories), where she served on the Board for many years in various officer positions. Alys founded Logan Street Sanctuary, Inc. (LSS), a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit music, arts, and education venue located in the heart of Noblesville, Indiana, and serves as the LSS Board Secretary. Alys’ paintings, photographs, and poetry have received national and international recognition.

Jennifer Criss works at Ball State University and resides in Muncie, IN. Her work has appeared in Poebita Magazine, Whispers in the Wind, Indiana Voice Journal, and The Poetry Community online. She has also appeared in several print anthologies: Midnight Dreamers of Yellow Haze by Michael Lee Johnson, Poetic Melodies by Donna Sanders et al., Poets of Madison County by Stacy Savage, and has a couple other in-process. A native of Alaska, as a youth D. Del Reverda-Jennings resided in Chicago, Illinois., and was educated in parochial academy institutions. From that timeline, the Indianapolis-based interdisciplinary artist has since traveled a creative and an artistic journey influenced by a kaleidoscope of cultural nuance. Visually D. Del Reverda-Jennings, is known for producing a broad range of work inclusive of sculpture, mixed media, installation, painting, and interdisciplinary roles in the artworld as an award-winning published journalist, arts editor, author and poet. She is the Creator, Founder and Independent Curator of “FLAVA FRESH ! ” an Indianapolis based, Annual Juried, Multiple Exhibition Presentation Series of Contemporary Art. The multicultural series has been an acclaimed visual arts showcase for over twenty-three years, with the seven month long consecutive event venue having received a number of honors and awards. The versatile arts practitioner also works as an administrator, facilitator and free-lances in a number of arts disciplines throughout the Midwest and beyond. As a journalist, regional arts editor and author Del Reverda-Jennings has for over two decades researched, sought out and cultivated aspiring beginners, newly-discovered, emergent and early-career artists who reside and work in Indiana as well as regionally to expose their creativity through writing, photographic documentation and by exhibiting their work in professional commercial arts venues, exposing their creative life stories, events and achievements in Midwestern regional, national and international print and online media. D. Del Reverda-Jennings, has been involved long-term in grass roots arts efforts, the non-profit sector and community service in Indianapolis and is the founder of several groups and organizations. The invested activist and cultural worker is a regional arts grant panelist, adjudicator, a noted lecturer and is currently an Artist Ambassador for the Central Indiana Community Foundation (CICF), and an Equity Ambassador for the Arts Council of Indianapolis. She is widely known for having acquired a well-earned reputation as being driven and making great things happen for underrepresented and/or marginalized artists and continues to be a vital force in the exhibition and scholarship of twenty-first century art.

Amanda Dowdal

Amanda holds a BFA from Herron School of Art & Design where she focused in printmaking and drawing. Following her undergrad education, Amanda worked for 5 years in a local business supporting and selling the works of local artists and facilitating a small gallery within the shop. Amanda currently works in Finance for a global tech company, but spends her free time practicing her creative skills at home.

Drema Drudge

Drema Drudge is a 2013 graduate of the Spalding MFA in Creative Writing Program. She’s represented by Lisa Gallagher of Defiore and Company Literary Agency, based in Manhattan’s Union Square. In addition to being published in numerous literary journals (The Louisville Review, Penumbra, and others), Drema has finished two novels and is beginning her third. She often writes about art, the second passion in her life after writing. Drema has had the honor to have her stories published in the premiere issues of three magazines. She has won several small writing competitions over the years, the first one when she was in high school. She has been mentored both officially and unofficially by some of the best literary fiction writers in the country. M. A. Dubbs

M. A. Dubbs is an award-winning Mexican American and LGBT+ writer who hails from Indiana. Dubbs writes poetry, flash fiction, and interactive/visual media. For more than a decade her writing has been published in literary magazines and anthologies across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia. She published her first collection of her poetry and short fiction titled Aerodynamic Drag: Poetry and Short Fiction (2021). Her poetry has been archived in Indiana’s Poetry Archive (INverse) and she served as judge for the 2022 Poetry Out Loud’s state competition. Dubbs has performed in several live and virtual readings including being a featured author for both Poets Laureate of Lawrence and Poetry on Brick Street. She also performed at the 2021 Grand Opening of Fort Ben’s Culture Campus. Dubbs lives with her husband, twin girls, cat, and dog and enjoys hiking, gardening, running, mushroom foraging, video games and watching 90s magical girl anime.

Devon Ginn

Devon Ginn, a published poet dabbling predominately in performance/ theatrical recitations, travels from state to state implementing his performance poetry lesson-plan for high school students & his collegiate peers. Valiska Gregory

Children Award-winning poet and children’s book author Valiska Gregory has published more than a dozen books for children. Translated in seven different languages, her books have received Parents’ Choice Awards, been chosen for the American Booksellers’ “Pick of the Lists,” and featured on PBS national television. Gregory regularly reviews children’s books for Publishers Weekly and speaks at schools, libraries, and conferences across the country. According to reviewers, Ms. Gregory’s work ranges from picture and chapter books full of “kid pleasing humor and plenty of action” to poignant books for all ages that are “told with a contagious sense of wonder.” Her writing has been called “shining and magical” with “language and phrasing . . . as pleasing to the ear as the story is to the heart.” A member of Authors Guild and the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, Ms. Gregory has an M.A. from the University of Chicago and has taught every grade from kindergarten to seniors in college. She received a grant for “artistic excellence and achievements” from the Indiana Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts, a Creative Renewal Fellowship from the Arts Council of Indianapolis, and her poetry manuscripts (for adults) are housed in the rare book room at the University of Wisconsin with the Juniper Press collection. Ms. Gregory was a Writer-in-residence at Butler University and the founding director of the Butler Children’s Literature Conference.

Lasana Kazembe

Lasana D. Kazembe, Ph.D. is a scholar of Urban Education, Global Black Arts Movements, and the Black Intellectual Tradition. His research interests intersect Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy, the Arts and Arts-based Learning, and social & racial justice in education. He has published numerous scholarly articles on education, race, culture, and history. A Poet and Spoken Word artist, Dr. Kazembe has performed at colleges and universities throughout the U.S., and venues in Canada, and Africa. As teaching artist, he has developed and facilitated creative writing programs within youth detention centers, prisons, community centers, K12 schools, and other learning spaces.

Nasreen Khan

Nasreen copyedits for a living, and writes poetry and paints to stay sane. She grew up in West Africa and Indonesia and moved to the wide and gritty American Midwest by way of New York City. She and her toddler son live in their bungalow on Indianapolis’ Near Westside. On a Friday night she can be found cooking various organ meats or chasing down a stellar mint julep.

Thomas Kneeland

Thomas Kneeland is a poet, author, copywriter, Editor-in-Chief of The Elevation Review and Founder of The Kneeland Center for Poetry, Inc. He strongly believes in promoting the voices of underrepresented writers across the globe and has inspired more than 20,000 lives with his own poetry collections and work within the nonprofit.

Elizabeth Krajeck

Elizabeth Krajeck is the author of two chapbooks. Her work inspired by Maria Magdalene Campos-Pons includes “Restoration Poetry,” prose poems based on residents in the Blue Triangle Residence Hall, performed at the United States of Mind, and “Half of What We Are Is Broken,” an installation with Angela Edwards and Steve Hubert at IUPUI’s Cultural Arts Center, and 2013 & 2014 Poetry in Free Motion with the Quilt Connection Guild with J L Kato and Mary Hawn. Collaborations also include urban retail postcard poems with the Lucas Gallery and projects with the former Ruschman Gallery. Krajeck, a community-based consultant and poet for Butler’s Center for Citizenship and Community, opened Permanent Press, Writers and Editors, a small bungalow-centered urban business for writers.

Stephan Laurent

STEPHAN LAURENT, Professor and former chairman of the Department of Dance at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana, joined the Butler dance faculty in 1988 after six years as the artistic director of the Des Moines Ballet, for which he produced and choreographed a number of full-length classical and contemporary works. He was the recipient of the 1986 Iowa Outstanding Artistic Achievement Award. Many of his ballets are now on the repertoire of the Butler Ballet, for which he continues to choreograph actively, including the award-winning original full-length contemporary ballet The Willow Maiden: a Fantasy Dance Adventure. His areas of teaching expertise include ballet technique, choreography, dance history, theory/philosophy of dance, and dance production. Prof. Laurent also teaches a First-Year Seminar in the Core Curriculum of Butler University, entitled Spellbound: The Quest for Magic in Speculative Fiction and the Arts. Prof. Laurent was for many years a member of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Schools of Dance and has worked both nationally and internationally on accreditation matters. He also served as an adjudicator and master teacher for a number of organizations nationally and internationally, including the National High School Dance Festival, the National Society of Arts & Letters, the Overture Awards, the Prelude Awards, the Hong Kong Academy for the Performing Arts, and the Newtown High School for Performing Arts in Sydney, Australia. He has also served as a consultant.
