My life is a very diverse book of many pages. For this, we shall begin, when my Artistic Me, began. In Dec of 2009 I became a victim of a violent crime. I had to undergo numerous surgeries, one of which was to save fingers on both hands. After months of therapy and searching for ways to get me to want to use my hands properly, I was given a camera. A light turned on in my soul. I started seeing and noticing things I never took the time to see before. Through all the hardships I have endured, the one blessing I hold onto is the chance to meet all the great and amazing clients, artists and supporters I have gotten to meet. Before, had I died, I would have been thought of as a good father, productive member of society and so on. Now, i get to help people leave their mark, their legacy, upon the World through my photography. • Kaila Austin
    Kaila Austin
Artist of Color; Black/African American; Literary Arts; Portrait; Visual Arts: Mixed Media, Murals, Painting, Portrait, Visual Arts Instructor, Works on paper
Kaila Austin is a painter and mixed media artist based out of Indianapolis, Indiana. She has been a participant in Murals for Racial Justice with the Arts Council of Indianapolis and has been interviewed for several magazines emphasizing Black arts and culture across the United States. Currently, she has a painting studio located at 201 Studios, where she also works as a bookbinder and printmaker.    Austin works primarily in mixed media portraiture, focusing on the ways in which the arts can humanize Blackness after centuries of visual culture that has been subversive and noxious. Working traditionally in oil portraits, she has spent the last year expanding her work into mixed media loosen the rigidity tied to classical notions of what art is supposed to be.  She primarily uses community members from around Indianapolis as the subject of her work, seeking to elevate everyday people and common people to the grandeur of historical narrative paintings.

    Gretchen 'Copper' Banning
Performing Arts: Music; Visual Arts: Constructions/Collage, Functional and/or Decorative, Mixed Media, Photography, Sculpture, Textiles
My artist name is Copper. I chose this name only because I was using it as an 'alias' when I was hosting goth parties in the 90s. That is when I started drawing and painting. I signed those works Copper and so I have kept it even though it confuses people. I am also a DJ and go by the name Copper Top, which is another story for another day. I am not a trained artist. My degree was in political science and history. I never even considered art until one day I decided in the 1990s I decided to draw a picture and showed it to my boyfriend. He said to 'give it up'. I hate those words so I kept going anyway. I continued drawing and eventually I moved into collage and painting. By the late 90s I was producing works which incorporated many styles and mediums. I had several small shows in the city in the early 2000's including The Bungalow in Broad Ripple and many coffee shops in the city. In 2002 I decided to leave behind my art to pursuing DJing as my main creative outlet. I decided that someday, when I didn't want to DJ as much, I would come back to my art.  I DJ'd all over the country and the world between 2002 and 2012. I released 6 licensed CDs which were distributed globally. All of this was done on small Indie labels here and in Germany. When I spin now from time to time I play a mix of industrial, psy trance, dark house, and techno. In January 2012 I began to become serious about art again. I brought to it a new confidence in making my own rules. I was also deeply affected by 'The Occupy Movement'.  I was an activist in my college days and worked on many humanitarian causes. I studied political economics and have always leaned to the left, although my current convictions have evolved since those days. I began to marry my concern for global political and environmental crises to my expression through art. I recently published a piece of prose in the Canadian art publication 'Adbusters' and strongly support everything that periodical hopes to accomplish for a better global future. I also very much enjoy creating 'decorative art'. I do this to distract from my gloomy side. I love vintage kitsch and moreover mxing it with other surreal 'childish' decorative objects. I love making diorama. I love spanish and latino style art and am strongly influenced by it. I also enjoy completely remaking large objects like furniture. I have dabbled in  painting, drawing, photography, collage, assemblage, sculpture. I hate making anything more than once. I constantly am looking for some new idea to bring to my art.

What is Quixotic Artistry?  It is first and foremost, my brand.  It’s whimsy, it’s being able to look failure directly in the eye, and say “f*&# off”, and turn it into success. It’s my past heartbreak, and my feelings of insecurity. Ironically, it is my suit of armour, and my confidence. It is Assemblage, fashion design, makeup artistry, and graphics.  It is choreography, it is design. It’s perfect balance. It is the rebirth of my failed attempts at becoming a fashion designer, yet is the new life of a new approach.  It is the phoenix, that is rising from the ashes of what I thought to be the end of a journey.  Alas, my journey is not over.  What is Quixotic | Artistry ?  It is whatever that I want it to be, and will be everything that I quixotically dream it to be.

Art gets me out of bed in the morning. Each work begins with the question “What if?”, and then the adventure begins. I studied art at John Herron and Indiana University. Most of my art that is one composition by day and another by night because I incorporate photoluminescent minerals that absorb any visible light and then shed it for 8+ hours when the lights go out. I’ve had South Studio B17,  in the CCIC in Indianapolis since 2016- Open First Fridays 6-9 PM, or by appointment: 812-679-7422

  • Anne Cleary
    Anne Cleary
Literary Arts; Performing Arts: Vocal; Visual Arts: Mixed Media, Painting, Textiles, Works on paper
Anne Cleary is a native Hoosier living in the Indianapolis area. She grew up out in the Zionsville countryside. Her childhood spent roaming the fields, creek and woods inform her work to this day. Much of her abstract work is based upon nature, landscapes and the sky, often referring to the mysterious connection human beings have with the natural world. She studied art, English, and vocal music in her undergraduate years, going on to pursue graduate work in vocal performance (Opera). Music is an integral part of her life, and a certain musicality can be seen in some of her painter’s language-  brushstrokes may sometimes conotate musical notation, layers of markings and glazes- perhaps a visual chord. She is currently working heavily in textiles- specifically painted and dyed silks and natural fibers for collage, wall hangings and fashion. She works out of her home studio in the top of a barn on the North side of Indianapolis, and is visited often by appointment.  Website. www.anneclearydesigns.com,                              Instagram : @anne_cleary BA 1997  Kenyon College, Gambier, Ohio. After being told for years that pursuing art wasn’t a viable source of income or success, I was finally able to abandon the discouraging notion that what I truly loved doing was insignificant. Perhaps I’m a bit late to the game of exhibiting my work…or maybe I needed to wait until now. Either way, it’s my time to take a risk and really start focusing on that which fills me with joy.

  • Gary Gee
    Gary Gee
Visual Arts: Ceramics, Graphic Arts, Illustration, Mixed Media, Works on paper
ARTIST STATEMENT: Gary Gee, finds the urban setting to be extremely fertile ground for all types of artistic expression.  Some of this inspiration has evolved from illegal graffiti and hip hop culture, or was acquired directly from art studies to design creation for wearable apparel and gallery exhibition.   Gee’s puts a lot of himself in his creations, much of the work is poetic and reflective of his experience in urban environments, the tight-knight communities, the dreams, desires, goals and the troubling and malevolent ways that black men are viewed by society.   This work is often psychological in nature with narratives expressed across multiple layers taking the tangible form of drawing, painting, collage and assemblage sculpture exploring the weight, depth and breath of the inner-city agglomeration through storytelling. The work is an extension of this versatile artist, it’s an honest visual narrative which includes a mix of natural talent, formal education, raw emotion with a sharp urban edge, and a strong street art aesthetic.  The visual commentary in his artwork includes a compelling range of work expressing a wide range from as far back as his playful Jr. High School sense of humor days, or an eclectic satirical spin on daily life-daily living, to a more quantitative and powerful social and political perspective. His current body of work has been based on exploration in ceramics which include pieces composed of hand cast miniature brick walls set off with a graffiti style amid visual symbols which he extracts and extends from the familiar.  These often contain hidden messages, important cultural or social representations meant to engage the curious onlooker.  The skulls are also hand cast, many of them contain imagery as well.  The crowns are regal imbued with gleaming luster finishes, multiple layers of glazes and incorporating his favored mixed media aspect by utilizing acrylics and spray paints.  The skulls that he creates are both a challenge and a lot of fun at the same time for him personally, due to the scientific aspects of ceramic media in general. The effort that this gifted artist has put out into the universe has manifested into many honors and awards including selection as an Ivy Tech Distinguished Alumni of the Year Award, an Indiana Arts Commission, On-Ramp: Creative Career Accelerator Participant and a recent Beckmann Emerging Artist Fellowship from the Arts Council of Indianapolis.  Accomplishments such as these have helped to bring his creations further into the arts mainstream as well as through participation in a number of juried exhibitions across the country.  His work is now held in private and corporate collections. Gee, has also now come to the realization that he should be more vocal as an artist, and in addition to creating distinctive artworks he recently began facilitating a weekly “Monday 2 Monday,” Motivational Monday campaign on social media in 2018.

Machaila believes that one can get anywhere with hard work and determination. She hopes to use these qualities and her artistic talents to better her community. She will be attending Herron School of Art+Design in August, where she will major in Drawing and illustration and possibly art education, and minor in African American studies.

    Angelita Hampton
Artist of Color; Black/African American; Literary Arts; Political Artist; Visual Arts: Crafts, Jewelry, Mixed Media, Painting, Photography, Visual Arts Instructor, Works on paper
My main creative work is as a mixed media artist. In the styles of contemporary expressionism or surrealism, I primarily treat subjects of social justice, employing imagery and text, while combining digital paint with hand drawn paper sketches, photography, watercolors, and collage. I enjoy the process of creation through experimentation and layering, and prefer producing prints created as a series of the same base image, reimagined in a variety of expressions, as part of an examination of the concepts of wholeness and separateness. I create art designed to challenge perceptions of race, gender, sexuality and social status through black portraiture and female figure in conjunction with popular images and ideology from American history and Black culture. A large portion of my work is created as public art, which I describe as being in a style of protest posters, designed with the intended effect of empowerment and the issue of a call to action. I often use traditional colors of American red, white, and blue, juxtaposed with images of brown and black people and images of social injustice. I also create using warm and rich earth tones with bright yellow and orange accents, as well as art with vibrant pinks, blues and greens.

My personal life experiences inform a great deal of the content and concepts of my art. The human experience has always fascinated me – whether these experiences are had within the context of our natural environment, the landscape of our internal minds, or within the context of other humans. Who and what humanity is and how we as humans identify ourselves is also a question that many of my works address. I also explore the many ups and downs that are experienced in the physical, mental, and spiritual realms as creatures living and present within the world. Much of the imagery I use has focused on the human figure due to reflecting on the concepts of the human identity and what it means to be human. This ideology evolves into questioning individual identity as it pertains to the self and how the self is expressed within society and culture. The imposed identities that are experienced on an individual level as well as the compulsory identities that individuals may be given by society are reflected and explored within my work. As a gay man growing up in conservative areas, I have known this type of experience first-hand and seek to identify and expose the various identities I see given to individuals through my work. Although some of my pieces explore the darker side of the human experience, I also believe that this experience is one of wonder and whimsy often fraught with confusion and misunderstanding. Having worked in the communications industry in customer service for the last thirteen years, often times my pieces illustrate a misunderstanding or miscommunication that might be experienced when communicating an idea from one mind to another.
  • Kyle Krauskopf
    Kyle Krauskopf
Visual Arts: Illustration, Media and Visual Communications, Mixed Media, Murals, Painting, Performance Art, Photography, Sculpture, Works on paper; Woodworking
Lightning wielding, mixed media artist Kyle Krauskopf creates like other people breathe. He has spent most of his life in the pursuit of artistic endeavor.  Originally from a small town in Indiana this vagabond creative has taken his drive many places; most notably Seattle WA for the past 5 years as well as several European countries when he backpacked through them in 2017.  He recently retuned to his home state to construct a “base of operations” for the newly developed goal of displaying in as many places throughout the world as possible.  Equipped with a sense of wonder and knack for creativity since birth, Krauskopf has always been drawing and creating.  He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Ball State University, where he learned what it was like to be around other creatives and was instilled with a drive to contribute something “new” to the world of art.  Never one to shy away from a challenge, Krauskopf has gotten into the habit of self-imposed, year long artistic goals.  The most notable of which was in 2015 when he decided to design and craft a new wooden animal each day of the year with his trusty scroll saw.  365 Days of Wood made the artist realize he places very little before commitment to his craft; that with dedication, persistence, and lots of hard work he could create impressive and wondrous works.  His work was recently featured in the national lifestyle magazine Vie, in tandem with an interview by editor Jordan Staggs. The work featured is of his Visual Vomit series. These pieces can best be described as heavily emotive pictorial menageries.  Each piece strives to marry realistic depiction of people, places, and things, with less detailed, but powerfully colored objects.  These pieces typically “radiate” from a centrally located theme or idea.  Repetition, color, size, detail, and shape all go into the process of achieving a visual balance.  Krauskopf also conceived of the Virago Artist Collective, an international artist collaboration striving to highlight powerful and influential women throughout history. The team consists of 13 artists and features a new personality and artist every month for the year of 2018, after which the whole body of work is to be shipped to each participants’ city for a showing of the collection. When Krauskopf isn’t having delusions of grandeur or conceiving of his next unrealistic challenge he can be found seeking out new and interesting conversation or enjoying a glass of gin.
