Born in Southeastern Michigan, Teri takes her inspiration from the lakes and landscapes of her home state and from quilt makers, both in her family and beyond. Her paintings have been exhibited in the Indiana State Museum and collected nationally.  They reside in the permanent collections of Eli Lilly, Franklin College, Wellpoint, Rush Shelby Energy, NPCA, and Community Hospital, and others.  In 2007, she was chosen to be one of the featured artists for the Arts Council of Indianapolis’ BeIndypendent campaign kick-off and, in 2008, she was juried into the Indiana Artisan Program.

    Visual Arts: Photography
My work, in general, concentrates on public space. It seems that the space provided for reflection and enjoyment is most often only used for rest or meeting. I use images to highlight what can be overlooked in these spaces. Through reflection and the appreciation of aesthetic in a space freqented by the pedestrian, enjoyment and appreciation can be highlighted.

  • Marie Broyer
    Marie Broyer
Graphic Arts; Media; Visual Arts: Graphic Arts, Illustration, Jewelry, Media and Visual Communications, Mixed Media, New Media/Technology, Painting
Broyer’s art career began in a formalized elementary education art program in Evansville, IN. In addition, throughout her early learning and primary education, Marie was offered participation in specialty art programs within the public-school systems and the local community. Nearing the end of high school, she chose to finish her curriculum at the inaugural charter “Signature School.” Furthermore, with the availability of this new artistic program, she focused her studies on contemporary art and editorial content. Most of all, Broyer won numerous awards for editorial illustration and content. In addition, was granted the opportunity as a high school student to participate in the juried Oakland City College (now Oakland City University) Art Exhibit. Thus, she participated in her first exhibit and at the age of seventeen and awarded a college level honorable mention. During this time, The University of Southern Indiana (USI) School of Liberal Arts Board of Directors selected (Stonestreet) Broyer as a recipient for a full liberal arts scholarship. While at USI, she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Liberal Arts majoring in Advertising and Public Relations and focused on fine arts and marketing. Then, she studied under the artist in residence, Ms. Judy Chicago, in New Harmony, IN and traveled the country. Primarily, she studied the artists of the modern and impressionistic movement. Most of all, Broyer found herself inspired by the Impressionist and Fauvist movements. “In essence the movement is a realist perspective through the eyes of the artist, not a photograph.” Furthermore, she seized those concepts and built her own style through creating layers of texture, line and color. Now, she applies her formal training through working in commercial art, digital marketing communications and as an educator teaching adult and youth art classes in her country-side studio. In addition, she continues to learn and expand her knowledge base to further enhance the artist community. In conclusion, Marie currently resides in Central Indiana working in the fine art and the marketing communications industry. For over two decades, she continues to grow as a professional fine artist and individual. Broyer’s representation spans regional museums, private shows, public exhibitions and juried fairs. Contributing the donation of time and art to public service initiatives, she adds her flair of unique business initiatives and an artistic perspective to the local community.

What is Quixotic Artistry?  It is first and foremost, my brand.  It’s whimsy, it’s being able to look failure directly in the eye, and say “f*&# off”, and turn it into success. It’s my past heartbreak, and my feelings of insecurity. Ironically, it is my suit of armour, and my confidence. It is Assemblage, fashion design, makeup artistry, and graphics.  It is choreography, it is design. It’s perfect balance. It is the rebirth of my failed attempts at becoming a fashion designer, yet is the new life of a new approach.  It is the phoenix, that is rising from the ashes of what I thought to be the end of a journey.  Alas, my journey is not over.  What is Quixotic | Artistry ?  It is whatever that I want it to be, and will be everything that I quixotically dream it to be.

My continuing theory that subjects my work is that there are parallel universes meshing together through magnetic energy fields. The energy fields are a network of wavelengths that are conduit in shape and move in and out of my landscapes. As I progress with my paintings and body of work the light orbs that are representational of theological energies will pipeline into our definition of space and leave the audience a new sense of view.

I’ve been making art my whole life, and it’s also been my profession for the last thirty years. As challenging as that can be at times, it is also a daily chance to bring beauty into the world and that makes me happy. When I asked a friend for three words to describe my art, without a pause he said “playful, constructive, nostalgic.” I think it’s a pretty good summary, and it applies whether I’m creating a mixed media project or up-cycling a thrift store find.
  • John Essex II
    John Essex II
Multi Arts; Visual Arts: Illustration, Painting, Works on paper; Bagpiper
After teaching art full-time for 33 years I’ve retired and formed my own art and entertainment business, EssexArt ABC, LLC. The “ABC” refers to me being an Artist, Bagpiper and Caricaturist. This is my life. This is my passion. This is my job… what I do for a living… and I love it more than words can tell. It is my way of exploring creative expression and, a majority of the time, being of service to others. My fine art is about journey and place. This came about as a result of my Arts Council of Indianapolis Creative Renewal Arts Fellowship. That project involved journeying to a place. That experience taught that the journey is the window through which the place is best viewed. As such, my works are a kind of personal “journal” that I love to share. Except for the commissions I accept, the fine art part of what I do is done for me. The caricaturing I do is all about fun. Whether I am doing caricatures at corporate, private or collegiate special events, my caricatures are strictly to add to the fun experience of the attendees of those events. The caricatures done at special events also give the attendees a very personal souvenir of the event. Consequently, the attendees leave with a good feeling about the event as well as a lasting frameable memento of the occasion. Since I am available for doing these special event caricatures at any time, day or night, I have had the opportunity to meet a very wide range of fun individuals be they early risers, work-day people, night owls or late night partiers. My commissioned full-color caricatures are often used as a light-hearted, fun oriented commemoration of an achievement of the subject… or simply as a gift to an appreciated individual. As in my special event caricaturing, good humor is stressed. No “pot-shots”. The caricaturing I do is done in service to others. Something new via EssexArt ABC, LLC is Pub & Paint, a time to relax with old friends and new for painting instruction, libation and good fun in the comfortable setting of a neighborhood pub. Pub & Paint is held the second Tuesday of each month at the Elbow Room Pub, 605 N Pennsylvania St, Indianapolis, IN, and at various other locations. Seating is limited so advance reservations must be made. Contact me for more information. I’m also a bagpiper and am available for special events, weddings, memorials, wakes, funerals and of course St. Patrick’s Day. The bagpiping I do is done in service to others and is always done in the decorum or “feel” of the event.

The sculpture is arrived through the manipulation of translucent aluminum mesh  which is sculpted using original folding techniques developed many centuries in Japan. Each individual sculpture is assembled from pieces numbering just a few into the hundreds. Each piece is custom painted with low VOC enamel paint to ensure durability and color.  Custom Lighting can be included to give the illuminated sculptures a radiant glow and pattern the surrounding areas. The lightweight kinetic sculpture ranges from 2’to 60′ in height. The Sculpture is my expression of the transcendence of all unseen things.  Those moments when we as human beings recognize the this moment is all we have.  To arrive at that moment requires that all thinking stop.  While studing Islamic Art I discovered that the geometric forms  allowed the viewer to slow down and become still, and through their stillness the unseen became seen and transcendence could occur. Through this transcendence the recognition of the “moment” allows peace and a end to suffering. “Passion”, 2003, Aluminum Mesh, 24″x36″ “Thirst for Desire”, 2003, Aluminum Mesh, 40″x120″ “Waiting for The Sun to Rise”, 2002, Aluminum Mesh, 48″x240″ Aluminum sculpture, aluminum, abstract, expressionistic, hanging, palm leaves

    Jodie Hardy
    Visual Arts: Sculpture, Textiles
Most of my youth was spent hiding: early on in closets and under the bed, later in the woods by the creek. It was safer there. When I discovered that clothing could be used as disguise, I hid behind the facade of fashion. Upon returning to the academy after years of professional life, I stumbled upon the notion that clothing can serve as a masquerade that simultaneously conceals and reveals. From then on I have felt compelled to explore the slippery realm of clothing codes. My work investigates issues of the identity construction and the commodity self through a lens I call sartorial semiotics. Clothing operates on many levels, from the intimate relationship with the body to ubiquitous article of mass consumption. During the everyday practice of getting dressed, a negotiation transpires as one’s “self” is hidden and displayed by the clothing worn. This creates an ambiguous space where one becomes both consumer and consumed as these choices elicit judgments from others regarding moral character, social status, and even intellect. Most recently my lens has turned toward the deeper issue of compliance vs. resistance in an age of ever-eroding privacy. From hand-me-downs to haute couture there exist clothing codes that can operate to affirm the status quo or signal dissent, making the wrong “outfit” as dangerous now as it has always been.
