“The Mechanics of Creativity” The vision behind Huey Does Art was birthed in 2007 but was in my heart from as long as I can remember. I constantly was reflecting on all of the opportunities that I wanted to be apart of, but could not because of the lack of money or skill. I never had the chance to have art classes in middle school or high school. I always wanted to take classes or have good art supplies, but money impeded me. From this, I have realized that I never want anyone to have to forsake their dreams because of misfortune; that is how Huey Does Art was born. As a whole I want H.D.A to be a creative factory for dreams. For its employees and employers, I want it to provide and help whomever with the supplies and opportunities that I never had, nor many others with whom I grew up. Huey Does Art will provide the world with the best visual/graphic designing possible, including teaching youth and adults skillful art tactics, providing various art demonstrations and openings throughout the Tri-state area and beyond, striving to be the most desired design studio to work for and consume from. All of the auxiliaries will be led by trained professionals and will provide classes, supplies and knowledge for schools, whether inner city or suburban, and after-school programs. Huey Does Art will be the “go to” company for any creative needs. We will be able to provide paid internships for children and adults alike, who are inspiring to enter the arts field.

Specializing in portraits. After graduating from Herron School of Art with a B.F.A. degree, and over twenty years as a graphic designer and illustrator, James Kelly wanted to create a business of his own utilizing his artistic talent. Mad Lab Studio was established in 2002 when he transformed an old chemical laboratory in downtown Indianapolis into an art studio. His Madison Avenue laboratory soon became known as “Mad Lab Studio.” In 2005, he moved his studio over his garage behind his home. James has been producing lively and colorful paintings of birds and pet portraits. His interest in portraiture has been a life-long passion. “Even though I’m painting in a realistic manner, my paintings are based on abstractions in reality. Reality has many moods, twists and turns, created by man and nature. I strive to reflect this energy in my paintings, dealing with light and color that create form.” James works on individual commissions from clients and participates in various art shows and gallery exhibitions throughout Indiana. He finds that Indianapolis is growing as a supportive, progressive arts-oriented city.

From his work with the legendary lead vocalist Jon Anderson from the progressive rockgroup YES on collaborations in stained glass, to his masterfully styled prophetic oil paintings or illustrations for album cover art, to artistic contributions to the Contemporary Youth Orchestra of Cleveland for the HDNet Concert Series, or his contributions of artwork to the careers of Kerry Livgren (Proto-Kaw), Kevin Max (dc Talk), Julian Lennon and the Jimi Hendrix Music Academy. Steven Kelso has lived a multifaceted adventure with an “Extra” part in the international blockbuster movie Spiderman 2, filmed during one of his annual art exhibitions in the capital of the fine art world New York, to his exhibitions in France, Italy and throughout the world participating in gallery sponsored art expositions in Europe to the Far East. Kelso’s work can be seen in museums, galleries and educational institutions worldwide with the latest edition of his work going on display at the Hard Rock Cafe in Seattle. Kelso is also the author of three books which catalog the road along the journey with his latest book, “Windows of the Soul” being inducted into the Nina Mason Pulliam Historical Special Collections Room in his hometown of Indianapolis. “Windows of the Soul” is considered to be the authoritative account of not only Kelso’s life story, but also gives you a grand view of Kelso’s signature stained glass technique. Today, Kelso has found a permanent home for his Windows of the Soul Chapel and is in the process of renovating the chapel with a team of talented assistants. Stay tuned.
  • Katherine Kemp
    Katherine Kemp
    Visual Arts: Painting, Visual Arts
Katherine Kemp grew up in a small town in Michigan called Plainwell. During her school days she was gravitated to the art world which she excelled in. Upon high school graduation she ventured to Grand Rapids, MI to further explore the Arts at Kendall School of Design. Although she put aside her passion for art to raise two daughters as a stay at home mother, her creative side was still an integral part of her life. Being able to volunteer with hospitals, schools and local organizations gave her the outlet for her creative skills. Then in 2005 she was able to invest and renovate a 90 year old home in Westfield, IN, creating the city’s only current art gallery. The gallery opened in 2006 and represents the contemporary work of Indiana artists. At this time, she was able to re-immerge from a 20 year sabbatical and begin painting herself. This has brought a positive and inspiring outlet for herself while being able to successfully sell her work to businesses and collectors. Works range from $250-$1600 with sizes from 12X12 to 48X48. At any given time, she can be found working on 6-8 pieces of artwork at a time with completion anywhere from several weeks to months. Her style is expressive abstract which allows her to explore a fascination and emphasis on texture and color for an ever changing possibility of combination and outcome to each painting. By using this technique, she tells a story much like chapters in a book, so each painting reflects life and nature through experiences, people and places. Her endless potential of expression can also be seen in her fine silver jewelry, which she designs and creates from PMC (Precious Metal Clay). As a certified instructor she finds great satisfaction in assisting others to find their artistic “voice” and create pieces that enables them to experience the artistic process.

In a way writing an artist statement is counterintuitive as art is a way to express the inexpressible or the struggles we face, but have trouble articulating..   However, language can provide some explanation to help us understand art. I find inspiration for my work in the world around me particularly in nature, music, film, dreams, and mysticism.  Stories often reveals the abstract layers of meaning of the dilemmas we encounter played out in the natural world.  In reflecting on stories and observing nature, I see the whole range of human experience manifesting itself. Incompleteness is a human condition. Finding meaning in nature, art, and our lives helps to alleviate this inherent human condition. In my pastels, I strive to convey a sense of wonder and mystery, and aim to inspire the viewer with a sense of aesthetics and a purposeful narrative.

Matt Kenyon’s Artist Statement   I feel a wonderful connection to the entire process of making art whether it is working in glass, wood, metal or any other medium. I have been putting things together and creating from a young age and have always had a passion for the construction of objects. Each piece that I create allows me to express a bit of my personality or imagination. I steadily try to keep my work contemporary and fresh. Glass is a medium that provides me endless opportunity to create, learn and teach.  Glass does not have very many limits in itself. The substance, an outwardly privative, slow-moving molten liquid, is capable of being formed and molded with not much more than air, a wet newspaper and an inspired mind.  I am drawn to it mainly because of the creative process itself. The infinite variations of color, depth and texture – along with any shape my imagination can envision – are just a few reasons why I like working with glass over any other medium. The beginning of a form always starts the same way on an empty blowpipe, like an empty canvas for a painter. Each piece depends on my timing, balance and control. I especially like the fluidity and adaptability of molten glass. When I decide a piece is finished, I let it freeze. What had started as a dynamic fluid molten goo is now beautifully frozen in time. When I create my furniture, I try to pair up the wood with the glass so that complementary synthesis is achieved. The two mediums have very different qualities, and I am constantly trying to blend one with the other to achieve a fluid balance. Synthesis between the two mediums is also attained through the use of color and medium characteristics. The personalities of each medium bring unique challenges that must be overcome. The process I follow bridges the gap to achieve harmony. Understanding the balance between mediums, I aim to create this beautiful synthesis. Matt Kenyon’s Bio Kenyon received his BFA in Furniture Design from Herron School of Art in 2008.  He has actively blowing glass at the Art Center for since 1998. Hi is an instructor at the Indianapolis Art Center as well as the department head of the glass studio.  He enjoys incorporating mixed media into his work including mainly focusing on glass with components of other mediums.  He has had a  studio at the Harrison Center since 2009 and has created a portable glass studio to take anywhere to do demos or classes.

Having studied the art of photography for over twenty five years, I am a self taught photographic artist. I aspire to discover and reveal the spiritual essence of my environment. For me, photography is a vital element of life; it is esoteric and abstract, yet temporal and existent. When photographing I feel and sense the spirit of what I am seeing.  The “design” of the subject or scene becomes an integral part of the final composition.  I examine and present nature’s and/or man’s mark, the combination of which is often society’s response to my subject.  The resulting photograph shows the condition and existence of the subject within a context, literal or metaphorical. I photograph within the environment in which I find myself.  I do not find it necessary to travel to a specific locale to make photographs that present something exotic, unfamiliar or detached from my day to day existence.  Rather I delve into my surroundings within the realm of where I live my life.   My main influences are Robert Frank, Aaron Siskind, David Michael Kennedy and Ed Ruscha. Currently I am working on a project entitled 2 Photographers Works In Progress – http://2PhotogsWIP.blogspot.com

Im a talented, smart and beautiful young woman who attended the University of Connecticut to play college basketball and receive a FINE ARTS degree in photography from 2005 until 2010. I traveled to Indianapolis in the fall of 2010 to start fresh. To live my life my way for the first time.  I am a young woman who is simple yet complex enough to confuse the world and myself, or maybe just myself. Art to me is everything. My art is my form of communication. I am able to communicate things that I cannot place into words. My art is about the battle on the inside. The push and pull of my thoughts, intincts, and emotions. I bare my heart and soul into pieces whether they are playful or dark and twisted. I have a constant battle of worth. All of my life I have been trying to earn my worth in things I do and accomplish. Worth in titles and certificates that honestly you dont remember. So wrapped up in being good you lose the simplicity of just being you. I strove for perfection but learned the hard way that does not exist. Perfection only brings you face to face with death. Then you have a choice to say “I DO” to satan or realize you can turn around and chose a different path. Luckily I woke up from a hell and chose life. You might ask yourself, ” why is she telling me all of this?” Because I real. I am human. And that is what my art is about. Its real. Its in your face. Not everyone will like it, but to be honest I dont care. A good or bad reaction is a positive in my book because I want my auidence to feel. To just feel. We live in a society where feelings are put last and feelings are a sign of weakness. That if you cry you are less of a man or if you voice your opinion you are too much. That if you listen to your heart you won’t be successful, or if you dont have a such and such job you are worth nothing. Screw that! We are a people of feelings and emotions. You people that are running away from your feelings, i feel sorry for you. Yes you will feel pain but that does not measure up to the experience of joy and happiness.  I don’t create artwork for others approval anymore except for my own. Im learning I will be misunderstood, talked about, degrated, praised, overlooked, criticized, and critiqued. BUT I please myself and that is I want. My only intention is to communicate my insides so I can stay alive.  To balance the internal with the exterior.  Art is everything. Everything is art.  Cassie Kerns  a.k.a CASSINOVA

Performing Arts: Music, Performing Arts, Spoken Word, Vocal
Temica Shree’ Key was born in Chicago, IL on October 26, 1981 to a family full of musicians and vocalists. She was first exposed to music as a small child by her mother who at that time was the lead singer of multiple local bands and girl groups. Temica made her singing debut at the age of 4 during her preschool graduation. Her small frame, but mighty voice belted out Whitney Houston’s “The Greatest Love of All” for all to hear. Later in her youth, Temica along with her immediate family moved to South Bend, IN where she continued to perform in local talent shows. Later, she joined the Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church Youth Choir under the direction of Reverend Morris Flannigan. As a member of the choir she served as one of the main soloist and was most known for her rendition of Darryl Coley’s “More Like Jesus.” In the fall of 1999 Temica began he collegiate career at Indiana University Bloomington. Once settled in Bloomington, she wasted no time taking to the stage and began performing at local coffeehouses and student sponsored events. Her dynamic stage presence, energetic delivery and intricate writing style quickly caught the eye of classmates and founders of local spoken word group S.O.N., Shaunette Beyers-Parker and Naz Khalid. Temica became a member of S.O.N. shortly thereafter along with Amir Khan, Noble LaVarr Woods and Ian Dunlap bringing the group total to 6. In the Spring of 2002, the group released their debut album, S.O.N. a Band of Poets. In the fall of 2003 the group disbanded. In addition to performing with S.O.N., Temica also sang with the IU African American Chorale Ensemble (AACE) under the direction of Dr. James E. Mumford. As a member of AACE, Temica starred in the ensembles production of Gospel at Colonus in the Spring 2003. While performing with the AACE, Temica also sang in the gospel group, God’s Progress which was comprised of 3 males and 6 females. The group sang under the direction of Alphonso Cherry and Carmund White. Upon graduation Temica returned to South Bend and began hosting various open mic and spoke word events. Missing the artistic expression of the big city, Temica moved to Indianapolis in May of 2007. Since being in Indianapolis, Temica has competed in, judged, won and hosted several karaoke contests. In February 2009, Temica joined acoustic rock group Soul Patch. The following year the group disbanded leading Temica to her current home, R&B band, Blue Soul Band. In addition to being one of the lead singers of this 8 piece band, Temica also performs with local acoustic act Temica Key Unplugged and with  The Temica Key Project a 4 piece band featuring her as the sole singer.
