I create many contrasts in my work, such as bright, abstract, organic shapes vs. thin, gesture lines, and glossy vs. matte finish. I do this by creating many layers and textures using much mixed media. I love to find the beauty in things that other people have discarded. I tend to take found objects, newspaper clippings, sand, twine, and glue to uniquely individualize my oil, acrylic, and watercolor paintings. I also listen to my subconscious, striving to paint intuitively. Another process I use to give a distinct characteristic to my paintings is my application of thick layers to build up the canvas creating a somewhat sculptural feel. Some of my paintings are very conceptual, but I do not believe that it cannot evoke a personal feel for the viewer as well. Living in downtown Indianapolis has inspired much of my hectic city life and fast paced traffic series.

Project One Studio is a digital design + fabrication studio, founded by Adam Buente and Kyle Perry in 2009. After receiving graduate degrees in architecture, we shifted our direction and began creating work that spans the boundaries of art and architecture. The studio represents our combined view of design and artwork in the physical environment, and a focus on how each project has a specific goal, client, material strategy, or aesthetic quality. We are focused on craft and complexity, and strive to develop unique solutions to every project. We are interested in experimentation, learning new processes, and continually investigating different fabrication techniques and computational tools. Our flexibility and varying skill sets have allowed us to pursue a variety of scales, materials, and project types.

William Denton Ray is an Indianapolis native and has been interested in art since he was five years old. William splits his time as a graphic designer and fine artist. His fine art studio is located in the Harrison Center for the Arts. William has recently worked with clients such as Adidas, Trader Joe’s and Hoosier Books. William’s fine art resembles Tim Burton and Dr. Seuss with a touch of Ed “Big Daddy” Roth and Stanley Mouse, all of who have had an influence on his work. William is also inspired by graffiti art, skateboarding culture, popular music, fashion and witty humor. He classifies his work in two words: “Whimsical Funk.” William currently has a studio at the Harrison Center for the Arts and is focusing on new work for his upcoming solo show in Indianapolis.

I grew up in Columbus, Indiana, a small Midwestern city with a unique architectural landscape. My experience on an indoor playscape I frequented as a child, designed by Cesar Peli in the 1970’s, instilled in me a strong aesthetic sensibility from a young age. His playscape featured green-carpeted hills, bulbous plastic and primary colored forms. Little did I know that as my little body rambunctiously meandered through the space I would one day bring that same playful and open ended attitude into my art making practice.

“It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see.“ This quote from Henry David Thoreau has provided a definition and direction for my photography in the years since my transition from simply capturing shots to creating images. The Creation of an image must begin first with a creation by Nature or Man, then the eye to Look, the mind to See, and then the finger to push the button to Capture the image. That process has led to a vision that my images must be Personal, and not Predictable. I have learned that it takes more than just holding down the button, and I still have a lot to learn. The older I get, the more I realize how little I know.

One often hears musicians describing their childhood as being filled with music and being surrounded by musicians. My story is similar except that I came from a family of makers. While Mom was making clothes and knitting blankets Dad was welding trailers and repairing cars. And all the kids joined in. My parents and grandparents did teach me some basic making skills, but more importantly instilled in me the desire to make things with my hands. Somehow I have always known, even back to my early childhood, that something made with moving parts is better than without.
I have delved into many different hobbies over the years, which has given me a little experience with many different media. Now working full time as an artist, I get to draw on this diverse experience and build with very few limitations
