Temara Payton

Performing Arts: Actor/Actress

“-Heck, even my dreams have dreams.” Temara Payton is an actress, model, and playwright from Indianapolis, Indiana. As a young child her high energy and “inability to shut up” prompted her mother to introduce her to the performing arts. She found her ‘home’ on stage at age 11.

Lacy Pearson

Born and raised in Utah, Lacy McKinlay Pearson is a self taught artist living in Indiana. Her early education and career focused on radiography, clinical education, and medical sales where she traveled all over the western United States. In 2007 she moved to the Midwest and within a few years became a wife and mother. Embracing this new role and attempting to balance the challenges it presented, she found solace in her love for creative expression. She spent 10 years exploring and experimenting with many different mediums. It was when she discovered fluid paints and inks that her passion for painting was ignited. Her paintings begin with a carefully mixed color palette and the intent to play. She utilizes pouring, her hands, air, brushes and gravity to guide the inks. She also makes use of acrylic paints, watercolor, pastels, and metal leafing throughout her work. Lacy lives, works, and studies in Carmel, Indiana. She loves spending time with her husband, 3 children and her sweet dog Piper. Beyond art, she dedicates her time to family, friends, yoga, travel, and supporting the local community.

Orlando Pelaez

I studied drawing, painting and graphic design, trained by Colombian masters back in the1960s. I then migrated to NYC in the 1970s where I had the opportunity to attend some classic arts schools, especially the renowned “Art Students League of New York.” I also worked for a department store doing visual merchandising. All of this training combined made me “a Jack of all trades.” Thanks to that, I have been able to survive as an artist all these years by being able to create visual art without limitations in several mediums. That vision I had as a child when I used to draw cartoon characters, my first Prismacolor drawing contest award at the Simon Bolivar park in downtown Medellin, my elementary school teachers pulling me out of my classroom to draw class subject matters for them on their chalk boards, etc. helped me build confidence as an artist at a time when I totally struggled with my academic education, particularly math. It was obvious to my parents and teachers that I belonged in the creative world making great works of art! No question about it. Moving to Indiana was my destiny after I met and found the love of my life, Alesa Stanley. I met my wife in NYC while she was attending Hanover College and collecting research data at the UN’s bookstore where I was working as a sales person. Indianapolis was a smaller city back then with a different atmosphere: green surroundings, clean, simple life, low cost of living and friendly. Opportunities for artists at the time were rather low however. One of my first opportunities to apply my art talent was given to me by the Hispano American Center on East Street near College and Massachusetts Avenues, where I did a series of large works depicting cultural Latin American images. I got my first full time job working for The William H. Block Co. Dept. Store in downtown Indy where I was able to develop my visual expertise further while being coached by professionals in the field; great carpenters and painters that been there since the 1940s. I did learn a lot from them! I am truly blessed to have a great family and a very supportive wife and children and to live in a community that supports the Arts even though its image is based

Stefan Petranek

As an image based artist Stefan Petranek (b. 1977) works across mediums that range from historic photographs to video sculptures that combine digital projection technologies onto a variety of 3D forms and surfaces. Working with subjects that range from genetics to climate change, his work explores how contemporary culture, especially through advances in science and technology, affects our perception of what nature has become. Influenced by his former training as a biologist, he harnesses the camera’s potential as both a tool of rationality and expression to reflect on humanity’s complex relationship with nature and in turn ourselves. Petranek’s photographic and video work have been exhibited widely in the U.S. as well as appearing internationally. Recently awarded the 2018 Christel DeHaan Artist of Distinction Award, his Brain Tumor Diaries, Genotyping and Genetic Portrait Project series have garnered notable attention including a review by Lenscratch in 2016. Following CODEX, an exhibition of his Genetic-based artwork at Tulla Culture Center in Albania in 2015, his Genetic Portrait Project Initiative was published in Front Line Genomics Magazine and work from his Genotyping series appeared in Manifest Press’ contemporary fine art photography book INPHA3 in 2016. He currently resides with his family in Indianapolis where he is an Associate Professor of Photography and Intermedia at Indiana University’s Herron School of Art & Design.

Julie Petro

Julie’s first exposure to art, as a very young girl, was her mother’s extensive art book collection, which she spent endless hours poring over with voracious enthusiasm. Most often her attention landed on the great portrait and figure painters such as Rembrandt, Ilya Repin, John Singer Sargent, Cecilia Beaux, and Diego Vela?zquez. Even then she knew she wanted to be an artist, and was encouraged early on by her family when they recognized a natural ability to capture the likeness of whatever she drew. Her formal study of art began in grade school and continued through her childhood and teenage years, through a brief career as an Army linguist living in Korea, and an even longer one as a communications manager for a national research laboratory in Colorado. Though she earned her BFA in painting from Arizona State University she considers painting education to be a lifelong endeavor and continues to study with notable artists, including Ron Hicks, Quang Ho, Jeff Legg, and David Shevlino. Julie has always considered herself as an artist of the realist tradition, and her brushwork is infused with an impressionist affection that invites the viewer to knit together the forms she has painted to create their own experience of the work. She recently moved back to Denver, where she teaches oil painting workshops and classes. Her work is in institutional and private collections all over the United States and Europe.

Comic book artists were among my earliest artistic influences. I still remember being 9 years old and riding my bike to the corner of Madison Ave. and Stop 11 in Indianapolis to buy the latest issue of The Uncanny X-Men. I would race home, flop onto the end of my bed, and be totally enraptured by the artwork and the stories. I used to look at the news print with a magnifying glass and marvel at the way an entire world could be created with simple tiny dots. I used to draw the characters over and over and I remember feeling empowered by the ability to bring a blank piece of paper to life with just a pencil. I have never lost that wonder. Even today, whenever I open an old comic book, the aroma of the news print takes me right back to that time in my life and I immediately feel the urge to draw. Currently, I draw inspiration from many modern watercolorists, but I also love to study the work of the French Impressionists along with ancient Chinese brush and ink art. I love to study the way the artists from the Op Art movement create extremely interesting images and I try to borrow some of their techniques for line and pattern. I still gather a lot of inspiration from comic book and graffiti art. I’m a watercolorist first and I truly believe that the best watercolors of all time are being created today and for good reason. There is something primitive and divine about using water as a medium. The untamed nature of the watercolor medium is what sets it apart from other media. I always try to use the watermarks and blemishes that a watercolor wash can leave behind as a design tool to excite the viewer’s eye. In all of my work, I strive to give the viewer’s eye what it wants to see. Hopefully, I can hold the eye for a moment and maybe even surprise it. With my figurative art, I want to challenge the viewer to wrestle with some of the same life concepts that I wrestle with. I want to show the viewer what I’ve learned thus far about life and painting. I’ve exhibited with the National Watercolor Society, Watercolor Society of Indiana, and Southside Art League of Indianapolis. I’m a signature member of the Watercolor Society of Indiana and I’ve had work on display at the Indianapolis Museum of Art and the Johnson County Museum of History.

Joshua Mark Phillippe

Joshua Mark Phillippe is an American artist working in the mediums of painting, photography, and printmaking. Joshua’s work has appeared in a wide-range of media including Brooklyn Ink, NYTimes.com, Whitehot Magazine and in Studio, a quarterly produced by the Studio Museum in Harlem. Joshua is a member of the Indianapolis artist cooperative Cat Head Press. Joshua is Professor of Art & Art History at Ivy Tech, Central Indiana. He has an MFA from the City College of New York and a BA in Art History & Studio Art from Indiana University Bloomington. Joshua has participated in several National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) grants including; Out of Many: Religious Pluralism in America at the Newberry Library in Chicago (2012-13), and World Religions in Indianapolis in coordination with IUPUI (2015-17). Joshua has completed the Master Teacher Program at the college and was granted sabbatical in 2019 to continue work on an ongoing Puerto Rico project titled My Fellow Americans.

Images are my life. Since I can remember I have been drawn to and fascinated by pictures and visual communication. I am an award-winning artist with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Illinois State University. I have a Masters in Art Education from the University of Illinois and teach in Indianapolis in an urban charter school. In that time I have been commissioned to provide book illustrations, paint multiple large-scale murals, and even a municipal electrical box. I also illustrate the comic “Corporate Misadventures” for The Jeff Havens Company. Art is an important part of all of our lives, and I am happy that over the years I have been able to add some beauty and whimsy to the world. For the past eleven years I have, also, taught art to elementary and middle school children at SENSE Charter School in the Southeast Neighborhood of Indianapolis. I have had the opportunity to work with children from Kindergarten to 8th grade and create projects that range from drawing, painting, ceramics, found and non-traditional materials to public place making.

Aaron Pickens was born and raised in Toledo, Ohio. He attended Toledo School for the Arts between 2001 – 2007. In December of 2011, Aaron completed his BFA in Digital Arts at Bowling Green State University and completed his MFA at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania in 2015. After graduate school, Aaron worked as a studio assistant for a digital installation artist and taught art at Adrian College, in Adrian Michigan, and other regional institutions of higher education for four years. As of August 2019, Aaron lives in Kokomo, IN where he teaches in the New Media, Art, and Technology department at Indiana University, Kokomo as an Assistant Professor. Both his plein air paintings and toy still life paintings have been accepted into juried exhibitions throughout the United States.

Christopher Pitts is focused on connecting the roots of the jazz piano tradition with the modern ear through energetic performance, thoughtful collaboration and aesthetic focused compositions. As a pianist he has been featured with Sean Imboden Large Ensemble, Rob Dixon Trilogy and Sedalia Marie at the Indianapolis Artsgarden. He’s also recorded two studio albums as keyboardist/co-composer of “Clint Breeze and the Groove” and served as musical director for the 2018 award-winning“Convergence” program. Deanna Poelsma

I began my artistic journey in 2009 by attending the Columbus College of Art & Design, where I earned my BFA in Fine Art focusing in ceramics and small scale metals. Following graduation it wasn’t financially feasible for me to continue creating jewelry, so I dove hands first into clay and have been playing with mud ever since. In the years following graduation I taught art, restored art, and served in the non-profit arts sector as a grant maker, but always had a desire to create full-time. In 2021 I decided to take a chance on myself, forming Glazed & Confused Creations to pursue my craft as a full-time career. Having been born and raised in Florida, my work is heavily influenced by the colors of the island and Caribbean, while my designs are inspired from both the Art Deco and Art Nouveau eras.
