Claire Sweitzer Hawkins grew up near Chicago, but has lived in Indianapolis since 2011. She graduated from the Herron School of Art and Design in 2015 with a degree in Art Education.

Memory is a nonlinear narrative: pieces of a story that are parceled away in various places in your mind, that come together to tell another larger story. These parcels are made up of moments and events that when combined create a new story and offer new direction. Our original memory can become distorted by perspective. What influences your recollections? Maybe a photograph has influenced how you remember something; maybe you have intentionally or unintentionally altered a story so many times that you now believe the altered version to be a factual account. When we remember a moment or event we remember it in an instant; we do not relive this experience as it happened in real time, it is relived in a fleeting moment. It is the stories told and the memories captured in these fleeting moments that I explore in my work.

Robin uses interesting objects from all over the world, recycled materials, fiber and vibrant colors to create one-of-a -kind art that lures the viewer away from their everyday thoughts. It is her mission to surprise the viewer into happiness and use art as a medium for exploring my story and conveying hope and compassion.

My personal life experiences inform a great deal of the content and concepts of my art. The
human experience has always fascinated me – whether these experiences are had within the
context of our natural environment, the landscape of our internal minds, or within the
context of other humans. Who and what humanity is and how we as humans identify
ourselves is also a question that many of my works address. I also explore the many ups and
downs that are experienced in the physical, mental, and spiritual realms as creatures living
and present within the world.
Much of the imagery I use has focused on the human figure due to reflecting on the
concepts of the human identity and what it means to be human. This ideology evolves into
questioning individual identity as it pertains to the self and how the self is expressed within
society and culture. The imposed identities that are experienced on an individual level as
well as the compulsory identities that individuals may be given by society are reflected and
explored within my work. As a gay man growing up in conservative areas, I have known this
type of experience first-hand and seek to identify and expose the various identities I see
given to individuals through my work.
Although some of my pieces explore the darker side of the human experience, I also believe
that this experience is one of wonder and whimsy often fraught with confusion and
misunderstanding. Having worked in the communications industry in customer service for
the last thirteen years, often times my pieces illustrate a misunderstanding or
miscommunication that might be experienced when communicating an idea from one mind

Paul Johnson is a graduate of the Herron School of Art and Design located in Indianapolis, Indiana. He is a printmaking major specializing in lithography with a minor in art history. His work includes both prints as well as paintings focusing on process, color, and the human figure. Paul has exhibited his work in a number of juried exhibitions including the Indianapolis Arts Center student show, where he received best of printmaking 2015, and The Water Show at Gallery 924. Most recently Paul and a group of his peers held their climatic thesis exhibition “KLPT” at the Circle South Gallery in Fountain Square, welcoming the public in to view their newest creations.

I am a queer feminist artist interested in examining gender and sexuality in a social and psychological context. I specialize in portraiture and oil painting. I grew up rural small town Indiana and moved to Indianapolis in 2014 to attend Herron School of Art and Design. Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to work with many incredible organizations around the city, including Indiana Futsal, where I worked as a graphic design intern, and Herron Youth Programs where I worked for two years as a Youth Art Instructor and Departmental Assistant. During my time with Herron Youth Programs, I worked with the Program Director to create and carry out the first ever Pride Studio, a week long summer camp at Herron highlighting LGBTQ history and art, showing LGBTQ youth how to create identity based art and explore their roles in Queer history. I consider these experiences to be crucial building blocks in making me the artist I am today, as they helped me find my love for building community and helping people reach their full potential by removing any roadblocks I can for them with my particular skill set as a creator, advocate and educator. I also perform drag and am working to build up Indianapolis’ Drag King scene, which is important to me because I believe some walks of queer life are often overlooked even within our own community.

I am an abstract artist living in Indianapolis. I started painting about 10 years ago, though it has been a lifelong passion. For a short period I studied under private instruction, then became interested in Abstract and Mixed Media.
I have won awards from The National Abstract Show at Garfield Park and from the SALI Members Show. My artwork in both private and corporate settings.

Time is not depressing when you use it to create art and foster creative experiences for others. It does not shrink and swell like it does for everything else. Each new brush stroke on an oil painting, not a deck, feels like an organized gesture that breathes new life.
So, too for me in the creation of model-sets that I create then render into photographs. Or, places I surreptitiously enter to photograph. A photograph is timeless tangible evidence that an action existed. I try to stress acts that deal with a high level of impermanence at their core then record them beautifully. Always trying to perfect for audiences so that not only I will benefit from the experience of them. Then, I tear down the structures and start a new idea. The new idea has a lineage with its predecessor and so on. I try to capitalize on this so that the photographs are in essence a family.

It was my great grandmother’s quilts that first inspired me to make things. I remember when my grandmother pulled the quilts from her closet and showed a then 7-year -old me. Looking at those quilts made me want to create. I loved all the patterns and uneven stitches she had made. It brought her to life for me in a way that was different from my grandmother’s stories about her. The quilts were pieces of history that she had sewn that held actual fragments of her life. As I grew older, I was also influenced by the artwork of second-wave feminists. My mother was a single parent who went back to secretarial school to support herself and her daughters. I felt inspired by work that celebrated strong women because it felt in direct contrast to the life I was experiencing. I was delighted in college when third-wave feminism was erupting and reclaimed the overtly feminine.
Over time, I came to the conclusion that I did not need to make the same kind of functional quilts that my great grandmother had made. I could tell a story in a different way. It made sense to me that the vehicle for her expression was functional. It was part of her Appalachian roots. I wanted to tell a story about my time, my world. addressing a less tangible albeit important need, to create an expression of an interior world. I wanted to do it by employing techniques considered feminine arts such as quilting, embroidery and weaving and I wanted to use overlooked materials. In my life, I do not need to make functional objects for everyday use like my great grandmother did, but as a person who struggles in socio-economic circumstances, I wanted to create a sense of beauty, a sense of wonder out of the things that surround me which are usually found or discarded. I am attracted by the time-worn history they contain and changing my relationship to often mass-produced items by giving them a new context.

“As an Indiana artist I try to incorporate all trades into my repertoire. With a Bachelor of fine arts degree from Herron School of Art and Design, I did not focus on a particular subject, rather tested and pushed my creativity and desire to learn new materials. I wanted to graduate with a broad understanding of different concepts and material list. This wide variety of knowledge has allowed me to open a lot of doors in art using mostly mixed materials together to make a surrealistic setting and natural but unsettling feeling.”

C.J. Martin is a conceptual artist who lives and works in Indianapolis, IN. His work deals with themes of Self and the Absurd based on concepts from existentialism and psychoanalytic theory. While conceptual, his work has mostly taken the form of medium to large scale abstraction over the last two years. Although his studio practice has lately been largely focused on painting, he also works with photography, collage and installation. C.J.’s studio practice is diverse in media and form, but united by conceptual concerns. His paintings mix an expressionistic, gestural approach to painting with drawing, printing, collage and found objects.
C.J. received a Bachelors of Arts in Fine and Performing Arts from Christopher Newport University in Virginia and a Masters of Fine Arts in Painting and Drawing from Herron School of Art and Design in Indianapolis. He has taught Painting and Drawing at both Herron and at Indiana University in Kokomo.

Anna Marisa Martinez graduated with a BFA in painting from the Herron School of Art and Design in 2013. She currently works as a Visual Merchandiser, set stylist, and fashion display designer. Additionally, she maintains a studio practice at the Circle City Industrial Complex.
In her work, the process of deconstructing an image and taking it out of its original context, makes the new image something that the viewer can critique. She does not believe that an image is a perfect reflection of reality.
Anna primarily works in collage. Her work has been exhibited nationally and in print.

As a freelance photographer and artist, Mary McClung focuses on America’s food culture and the social bonds found in making and sharing of food.
McClung has been a fine artist and commercial photographer for over 20 years. Her practice includes all photographic media including film, digital photo and video, and alternative processes such as cyanotype and wet collodion processes.
Her fine art media includes multi-media work, encaustics, and oil, acrylic and watercolor painting.
Mary graduated with highest distinction (summa cum laude) with a BFA in Photography from Herron School of Art + Design, Indiana University.

For centuries humans have created art purely to express what was inside them, begging to be let out. Feeling a strong connection to the primal markings our ancestors used in their caves, on the cliffs, with piles of stones and even in the wet earth, I manipulate layers of materials with my hands and other simple tools as a way to connect back to those primitive urges. By using artistic, industrial and natural resources such as paper, acrylic, ink and even concrete, gravel, sand, stones and wood I tell visual stories using organic and geometric shapes. The act of physically connecting the layers and materials in each piece is a very fulfilling, sensory experience.
Creating abstract art has come to be a passion in my life and sharing the artistic methods I explore with others is a natural part of my process. I am continually fascinated by the originality that dwells within each person! Given access to the same media and techniques no two individuals create the same thing. Watching their progress as I guide them through an artistic process helps me to grow as an artist as well.
Viewers are drawn to my work by the texture, color and details. By spending time with my art they will also find things hidden within the layers, waiting to be discovered. I delight in the moment when those details reveal themselves to others, sparking inspiration, stirring emotions or provoking thought.
