I have always loved working with my hands. A few years ago I started knitting and became intrigued with silk painting and nuno felting. The colors, textures and fun of creating wearable art has been a great experience for me. The bright colors of the dye and the subdued, soft wool make for beautiful contrast that lends to unique work.

Most of my youth was spent hiding: early on in closets and under the bed, later in the woods by the creek. It was safer there. When I discovered that clothing could be used as disguise, I hid behind the facade of fashion. Upon returning to the academy after years of professional life, I stumbled upon the notion that clothing can serve as a masquerade that simultaneously conceals and reveals. From then on I have felt compelled to explore the slippery realm of clothing codes. My work investigates issues of the identity construction and the commodity self through a lens I call sartorial semiotics. Clothing operates on many levels, from the intimate relationship with the body to ubiquitous article of mass consumption. During the everyday practice of getting dressed, a negotiation transpires as one’s “self” is hidden and displayed by the clothing worn. This creates an ambiguous space where one becomes both consumer and consumed as these choices elicit judgments from others regarding moral character, social status, and even intellect. Most recently my lens has turned toward the deeper issue of compliance vs. resistance in an age of ever-eroding privacy. From hand-me-downs to haute couture there exist clothing codes that can operate to affirm the status quo or signal dissent, making the wrong “outfit” as dangerous now as it has always been.

I was born in Kendallville, IN, in 1983. I studied sculpture and woodworking at Ball State University with Kenton Hall and Pat Nelson. Throughout my undergraduate career, I developed a love for sculpture and woodworking that has grown into a life-long interest. I graduated from Ball State University in Muncie, IN with a Bachelor of Fine Art in Sculpture in 2006. I am continuously honing my skills and learning new techniques to incorporate into my art as my artistic career progresses. I currently live in Indianapolis, IN, with my wife and son, Becky and Oliver. My work has been shown in some group shows and juried exhibitions.
My current series began with my undergraduate thesis but has continued to change and grow as I discover new techniques and take inspiration from new sources. The freedom and simplicity that working with wood allows me has created a turning point in my artistic career. My work incorporates elements of the human figure into functional furniture while using an innovative wood-inlay technique. My works do not depict the figure as a whole, but often take inspiration from smaller parts of the body that are then abstracted and simplified. I utilize aspects of wood itself, such as wood grain, to emphasize figurative elements within each sculpture.
My designs are influenced by modern and contemporary styles but I use traditional woodworking techniques to create my art. Organic curves, exotic wood, unity, and abstractions are the key elements of my current work. I use wood-inlay to create lines, definition, and

Paul Johnson is a graduate of the Herron School of Art and Design located in Indianapolis, Indiana. He is a printmaking major specializing in lithography with a minor in art history. His work includes both prints as well as paintings focusing on process, color, and the human figure. Paul has exhibited his work in a number of juried exhibitions including the Indianapolis Arts Center student show, where he received best of printmaking 2015, and The Water Show at Gallery 924. Most recently Paul and a group of his peers held their climatic thesis exhibition “KLPT” at the Circle South Gallery in Fountain Square, welcoming the public in to view their newest creations.

As a child, the matriarchs in my family were always trying to interest me in all things fiber, such as sewing, weaving and crocheting. I always enjoyed making things with my hands. When I went away to college, I decided to major in art, and I was beside myself with joy that Indiana University was offering a textiles program. While there, I learned more about dyeing and I was hooked.
I graduated in 2004 with a B.A. in Studio Art, and I have been dyeing ever since. I have experimented with various forms of tie dye and shibori.

I am a queer feminist artist interested in examining gender and sexuality in a social and psychological context. I specialize in portraiture and oil painting. I grew up rural small town Indiana and moved to Indianapolis in 2014 to attend Herron School of Art and Design. Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to work with many incredible organizations around the city, including Indiana Futsal, where I worked as a graphic design intern, and Herron Youth Programs where I worked for two years as a Youth Art Instructor and Departmental Assistant. During my time with Herron Youth Programs, I worked with the Program Director to create and carry out the first ever Pride Studio, a week long summer camp at Herron highlighting LGBTQ history and art, showing LGBTQ youth how to create identity based art and explore their roles in Queer history. I consider these experiences to be crucial building blocks in making me the artist I am today, as they helped me find my love for building community and helping people reach their full potential by removing any roadblocks I can for them with my particular skill set as a creator, advocate and educator. I also perform drag and am working to build up Indianapolis’ Drag King scene, which is important to me because I believe some walks of queer life are often overlooked even within our own community.

I’ve always loved art and crafts and doodled on my algebra notes. I started seriously working on portraits while at college, although I didn’t pursue an art career. Despite this, I managed to get noticed in many of the places I worked and was commissioned to do portraits, posters, flyers, brochures, caricatures, etc. during my work day. I wrote and illustrated training manuals for one organization and sold commissioned portraits in my free time. I took a hiatus from art while raising my 3 girls. Now I use my daughters as models for a variety of pictures. In the past 3 years, having more time to spend on art, I designed a website, opened an art studio at Lafayette Renaissance Academy and participated in a variety of juried shows and exhibitions, doing demonstrations and assisting local art organizations with creating brochures and websites. I work with pencil, pastel, charcoal, colored pencils, watercolor, acrylic and oil. I tend to mix mediums, using pastels and colored pencil together or watercolor and pastel. I’ve created portraits with subjects in live sittings and from photographs. I enjoy drawing portraits and also enjoy creating ‘fantasy’ pictures of mermaids, angels and elves. I also enjoy re-creating the many places I’ve visited in the US, Canada and Europe.
Currently my work can be viewed online at llauter.com. I have had artwork at the Art Museum of Lafayette and the Mental Health Association. Shows include an exhibition at the Tippecanoe Arts Federation, Crawfordsville Art Fair & the Round the Fountain Art Festival.
In 2010, I was hired to complete a series of paintings for an office waiting room- the largest being 36′ x 48′ and upon completion of this, I went on to paint murals in adjacent space.
In 2012, I opened a shop in downtown Lafayette called Main Street Artisans and featuring artisan crafts and fine art.
In 2014, I moved back to Indy and adopted a puppy. I currently work on portraiture and formulating natural home and bath products.

It was my great grandmother’s quilts that first inspired me to make things. I remember when my grandmother pulled the quilts from her closet and showed a then 7-year -old me. Looking at those quilts made me want to create. I loved all the patterns and uneven stitches she had made. It brought her to life for me in a way that was different from my grandmother’s stories about her. The quilts were pieces of history that she had sewn that held actual fragments of her life. As I grew older, I was also influenced by the artwork of second-wave feminists. My mother was a single parent who went back to secretarial school to support herself and her daughters. I felt inspired by work that celebrated strong women because it felt in direct contrast to the life I was experiencing. I was delighted in college when third-wave feminism was erupting and reclaimed the overtly feminine.
Over time, I came to the conclusion that I did not need to make the same kind of functional quilts that my great grandmother had made. I could tell a story in a different way. It made sense to me that the vehicle for her expression was functional. It was part of her Appalachian roots. I wanted to tell a story about my time, my world. addressing a less tangible albeit important need, to create an expression of an interior world. I wanted to do it by employing techniques considered feminine arts such as quilting, embroidery and weaving and I wanted to use overlooked materials. In my life, I do not need to make functional objects for everyday use like my great grandmother did, but as a person who struggles in socio-economic circumstances, I wanted to create a sense of beauty, a sense of wonder out of the things that surround me which are usually found or discarded. I am attracted by the time-worn history they contain and changing my relationship to often mass-produced items by giving them a new context.

Art quilts are my passion. They combine color, texture and design together. My designs are original or reworked traditional. I love color and my work clearly shows that. In addition, I love adding a layer of texture, such as three-dimensional pieces. Most of the time, I start the process with a design in my head which I put down on paper. I then pull fabrics and start cutting and sewing. Lots of times my draft is not even close to what I actually made but it is still part of the process. Sometimes I see a fabric and it serves as the jumping off point for the piece of art.
I am a Professional Engineer and many of the tools that I learned how to use are ones that I use on a regular basis. These include French curves, a compass and graph paper. The challenge becomes how to translate the design to fabric. Fortunately I am not hindered by the fear of mistakes. It is all part of the process. Sometimes those mistakes become the perfect feature of a piece.

I love using needles, threads, fibers, fabrics and beads. I have employed them in many forms since childhood. I have a need to use my hands to make things… to make art. It is my pleasure. It is my therapy. I make it for myself and hope that others enjoy looking at it, using it and wearing it as much as I enjoy making it.

Anna Marisa Martinez graduated with a BFA in painting from the Herron School of Art and Design in 2013. She currently works as a Visual Merchandiser, set stylist, and fashion display designer. Additionally, she maintains a studio practice at the Circle City Industrial Complex.
In her work, the process of deconstructing an image and taking it out of its original context, makes the new image something that the viewer can critique. She does not believe that an image is a perfect reflection of reality.
Anna primarily works in collage. Her work has been exhibited nationally and in print.

Sarah Jayne Mercado began her craft of upcycling in her early teens after learning how to sew. For her, art is both about the processes and the experimentations. She practices collage, assemblage, abstraction, and all the things in between.
Sarah lives in Franklin, Indiana where she immerses into her studio life surrounded by the sounds of birds, dogs, and trains. The inspiration for her art comes from her encounters with unique people and their stories, the curiosities of various societies, and the despairing and wondrous moments experienced through the processes of living. Life is about the journey and Sarah plans to expand upon her life and the lives of others through our humanistic need to create.

I’m currently a student at International Business College (IBC). I am a freelance graphic artist, I love working on character art, and concept design work. I’ve done a few logos, and design packages, I love the satisfaction I leave my clients with once they approve of the final iteration.
I enjoy knitting, crochet, and embroidery as well. I love how I can weave graphics design into embroidery and how it all falls into place. I enjoy a bit of sewing, though it is a continual learning process for me, so I’m always eager to try new stitches and techniques!

“Our greatest masquerade is that we believe we do not depend on the soil, water and air; that somehow we exist out of Wal-Mart’s. It is a great naiveté that technology, or perhaps even civilization, has convinced us that we are separate from nature. The need to understand American culture and politics and explain the histories behind the myths about nature and social norms that are integral to environmental concerns motivate my art making. The nature I have grown up in is contrived, polluted, mutated, and is usually experienced through and by boundaries. I want to explore nature in a myriad of ways that may not be natural at all. By creating an inverted forest and tending to a field of dandelions the fantasies of these installations may not be far fetched. I continue to explore the imposition of my hand, as a creator and an American consumer, and how I can influence the world around me. With the multiplicity of hands, minds, and ideas the consequence of our actions is hard to predict. These routes and paths are created or chosen, whether deliberately abrupt or at the disposal of the winds, eventually intersections will occur and it is ultimately these moments of collision that I am fascinated with.” Desiree Moore

Amelia graduated with honors from Ball State University in 2008. Her photographs are included in collections at Ball State University and the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction. She is an active member of the Postcard Collective, an international artist postcard exchange group. Amelia was a 2013 Robert D. Beckmann, Jr. Emerging Artist Fellow through the Arts Council of Indianapolis. She won a “golden ticket” scholarship to attend the Photolucida portfolio review festival in 2013 and was a 2014 Critical Mass finalist.

Though Ismaila’s most recent creative work is in the art of batik; he first mastered the art of stone sculpture. He began working with stone at the age of 14, and exhibited his work at age 17. His stone sculptures have been shown in such prestigious venues abroad as the National Gallery of Contemporary Art in Dakar, Senegal, and at the Pan African Biennial Exhibition DAK’ART, the International Salon Ouagadougou. Burkina Faso and the Arts Exposition in France.
