Samantha Glover

Samantha Wright is an Indianapolis-based artist who specializes in mixed media and painting on canvas. The medium she works with the most is paint and canvas. From Ivy Tech, she obtained her Associate degree in Fine Art’s. Wright graduated from Herron School of Art and Design at IUPUI and earned her BFA degree in Integrative Studio Practice with a Minor in Art History.

Machaila Gray

Machaila Gray is an 18 year old local artist. She has nurtured an interest in visual arts since childhood, viewing it as top-priority and working diligently to further better her talents. She is a Class of 2017 alumni of Broad Ripple High School for the Arts & Humanities. It was there that she was given many opportunities to improve as well as real-world experience in the art community by her instructors, Troy Judd and Debra Tyte. The “artsy” environment, vibe, and community of Broad Ripple Village (which surrounded the school) has also been a major inspiration for her. While attending BRHS, Machaila has participated in live, on-the-road performances alongside the school’s vocal and instrumental talents. She also has some class-room teaching experience, occasionally assisting her teachers with their younger students. She also loves to assist her classmates with projects when needed. Machaila believes that one can get anywhere with hard work and determination. She hopes to use these qualities and her artistic talents to better her community. She will be attending Herron School of Art+Design in August, where she will major in Drawing and illustration and possibly art education, and minor in African American studies.

I am an artist and an illustrator who is currently a junior at Indiana University – Bloomington. I work with traditional mediums like pen and ink, watercolor, acrylic paint and colored pencil as a medium. I’ve worked as a freelancer in creating design templates for customers and helping them market their business to their clients and customers. I love playing ping pong, or learning new dance moves when I am not drawing or find ways to do photograph to inspire my creative side.

After retiring as Greenfield Central Junior High School’s visual arts teacher, I enjoy painting representational imagery and continue to discover new ways to express ideas. Plein air painting is a favorite past time. My subject matter is a gallimaufry of various themes and subjects, sometimes abstracted. Working in oil, acrylics, or watercolors, I experiment with processes. Studio 212A is located in the Bradley Hall Events Center in Greenfield, IN where I work and teach. “In February, 2020 I took a job painting a mural of clouds, running 125 feet around the atrium of a Muncie Retirement Center. Thank goodness for big sponges and a lift. Most recently, twenty illustrations for MOMMS…the Mountain of Mismatched Socks children’s book were also created. That book can now be purchased on Amazon. I am now working on the sequel to be published by December. I love sharing my skills and if interested in a lesson or a commission, give me a call.” The “Nine Little Goblins” outdoor display is based on J W Riley’s poem and can be seen each fall on top of his Greenfield boyhood home. Additional projects include more goblins for the Jack-o-Lantern Walk, the Rotary Club Murals along Pennsy Trail in Greenfield, and works created using acrylics, fluid acrylic on yupo, and oils. Angelita Hampton

My main creative work is as a mixed media artist. In the styles of contemporary expressionism or surrealism, I primarily treat subjects of social justice, employing imagery and text, while combining digital paint with hand drawn paper sketches, photography, watercolors, and collage. I enjoy the process of creation through experimentation and layering, and prefer producing prints created as a series of the same base image, reimagined in a variety of expressions, as part of an examination of the concepts of wholeness and separateness. I create art designed to challenge perceptions of race, gender, sexuality and social status through black portraiture and female figure in conjunction with popular images and ideology from American history and Black culture. A large portion of my work is created as public art, which I describe as being in a style of protest posters, designed with the intended effect of empowerment and the issue of a call to action. I often use traditional colors of American red, white, and blue, juxtaposed with images of brown and black people and images of social injustice. I also create using warm and rich earth tones with bright yellow and orange accents, as well as art with vibrant pinks, blues and greens.

Studio Haydon LLC is a private art and design firm located in Garfield Park. Andrea’s work spans from commissioned pieces, to murals, to graphic design work. I have always been drawing. Some of my first memories are of me in church and getting too restless and my mom would hand me a receipt and a pen and let me draw instead of waggling my legs at top speeds. Then I drew on my schoolwork, the teachers had mixed reviews on the finished products since a good deal of the time it covered up more “important” stuff like math. Agree to disagree, in my opinion. But I never stopped and it never got boring. Toys and games and other interests have come and gone, but I’ve never put down the pencil. A lot of artists don’t admit they first and foremost draw for themselves, I definitely do and it took a long time and more than one round of self-examination to understand that. My perspective is slightly different because I typically draw things for a younger version of myself. I frequently think, “What would me at 7 years old want to see?” and create that, my tastes as a child leaned heavily toward the fantasy and horror genres and still do. I usually end up with images of monsters or animals in bright colors using much-loved influences from street art, animation, and tattoo flash. I’m also academically trained and use color theory and compositional fundamentals to hone these monsters and critters into more polished works than what I used to make on notebook paper in school. In the past, I have tried to do other jobs and start multiple other careers, but lost interest in each one with time, but art never got boring. It got scary, it got difficult, and it got incredibly stressful in a multitude of ways, but never boring. I never want to stop creating and never intend to and am looking forward to making all the goofy-looking creatures in all the loud colors until my hands fall off.

My personal life experiences inform a great deal of the content and concepts of my art. The human experience has always fascinated me – whether these experiences are had within the context of our natural environment, the landscape of our internal minds, or within the context of other humans. Who and what humanity is and how we as humans identify ourselves is also a question that many of my works address. I also explore the many ups and downs that are experienced in the physical, mental, and spiritual realms as creatures living and present within the world. Much of the imagery I use has focused on the human figure due to reflecting on the concepts of the human identity and what it means to be human. This ideology evolves into questioning individual identity as it pertains to the self and how the self is expressed within society and culture. The imposed identities that are experienced on an individual level as well as the compulsory identities that individuals may be given by society are reflected and explored within my work. As a gay man growing up in conservative areas, I have known this type of experience first-hand and seek to identify and expose the various identities I see given to individuals through my work. Although some of my pieces explore the darker side of the human experience, I also believe that this experience is one of wonder and whimsy often fraught with confusion and misunderstanding. Having worked in the communications industry in customer service for the last thirteen years, often times my pieces illustrate a misunderstanding or miscommunication that might be experienced when communicating an idea from one mind to another.

How fortunate I was to teach public school art for twenty two years. My goal was to promote my students’ art, to build their esteem, and to facilitate in scholarship programs. Now retired after a total of 42 years in various levels of education, I travel a hopeful path as an artist. It is time to promote my own art! As of late, I’ve been experimenting and developing my skills and processes. I find inspiration everywhere I look, and that inevitably filters down to my work. Delight finds me when I look closely at small sections of buildings, vegetation, and every day things we take for granted. As I perceive the image and move my interpretation to canvas or paper, I stretch what is typically a structured image into color experimentation using arbitrary, analogous, and complimentary colors.

My paintings and drawings are Realism and Hyperrealism. My goal, always, is to create the illusion of a reality that’s just a bit sharper, brighter and more real than reality. I start with a careful composition, from which I prepare a detailed graphite drawing before ever touching brush or pen to paper. In paintings I highlight depth and veracity with strong, bright colors; in drawings, with shading and hatching. I want my paintings to feel like a window the viewer can almost reach into, rather than an image on a two-dimentional surface.

Paul Johnson is a graduate of the Herron School of Art and Design located in Indianapolis, Indiana. He is a printmaking major specializing in lithography with a minor in art history. His work includes both prints as well as paintings focusing on process, color, and the human figure. Paul has exhibited his work in a number of juried exhibitions including the Indianapolis Arts Center student show, where he received best of printmaking 2015, and The Water Show at Gallery 924. As I got older and became a man I considered myself a poet and a philosopher when it came to art. Im a talented, smart and beautiful young woman who attended the University of Connecticut to play college basketball and receive a FINE ARTS degree in photography from 2005 until 2010. I traveled to Indianapolis in the fall of 2010 to start fresh. To live my life my way for the first time. I am a young woman who is simple yet complex enough to confuse the world and myself, or maybe just myself. Art to me is everything. My art is my form of communication. I am able to communicate things that I cannot place into words. My art is about the battle on the inside. The push and pull of my thoughts, intincts, and emotions. I bare my heart and soul into pieces whether they are playful or dark and twisted. I have a constant battle of worth. All of my life I have been trying to earn my worth in things I do and accomplish. Worth in titles and certificates that honestly you dont remember. So wrapped up in being good you lose the simplicity of just being you. I strove for perfection but learned the hard way that does not exist. Perfection only brings you face to face with death. Then you have a choice to say “I DO” to satan or realize you can turn around and chose a different path. Luckily I woke up from a hell and chose life. You might ask yourself, ” why is she telling me all of this?” Because I real. I am human. And that is what my art is about. Its real. Its in your face. Not everyone will like it, but to be honest I dont care. A good or bad reaction is a positive in my book because I want my auidence to feel. To just feel. We live in a society where feelings are put last and feelings are a sign of weakness. That if you cry you are less of a man or if you voice your opinion you are too much. That if you listen to your heart you won’t be successful, or if you dont have a such and such job you are worth nothing. Screw that! We are a people of feelings and emotions. You people that are running away from your feelings, i feel sorry for you. Yes you will feel pain but that does not measure up to the experience of joy and happiness. I don’t create artwork for others approval anymore except for my own. Im learning I will be misunderstood, talked about, degrated, praised, overlooked, criticized, and critiqued. BUT I please myself and that is I want. My only intention is to communicate my insides so I can stay alive. To balance the internal with the exterior. Art is everything. Everything is art. I am an older person that has started to learn drawing from my mentor, Diane Breman. Diane and I have been meeting for about an hour, once a week, on Zoom. We started in Nov. 2020. She has given me the courage to try things with drawing that I was afraid to try. I am a Realtor and have played the drums my entire life. Woodworking is also a very fun hobby and I love to flyfish. Originally from Texas, we moved to Indiana with a manufacturing company and I now work with Carpenter Realtors. I have not settled on a media yet, but find colored pencil fun to work with.
