Jerry Points

Visual Arts: Painting

Nine years ago, retirement was given new meaning for artist Jerry Points. After a successful career in graphic design, Points opened a studio/gallery at the Stutz Building in downtown Indianapolis. As president of the Stutz Artists Association, Points developed the concept for Stutz Art Space, gallery and classroom. While at the Stutz, Points devoted himself to plein air painting and established a national and regional following. Continuing his personal artistic development as well as a desire to showcase other artists, Points left the Stutz and opened a new gallery, Eye On Art, in the Carmel Arts and Design District. In addition to exhibiting his own work, the gallery also features 20 local, national and international artists. Points is also serving as this year’s president of the Carmel Gallery Association. Points’ paintings have been recognized with honors from the Hoosier Salon, Indiana Heritage, and Indiana Artists exhibitions. His entries in the Hoosier Salon have won “Best Impressionistic Landscape,” “Best Dynamic Landscape” and, in 2005, his entry was selected by the Indiana State Museum for their permanent collection. Recently, his painting, “Rainbow Woods” was purchased for inclusion in the Greater Lafayette Museum’s permanent collection. As a plein air painter, he has won awards in several paint-outs, including Best of show in the Zionsville and Hamilton County Paint-Out. He was selected to participate again in the 2013 Door County, Peninsula School of Art Paint-Out.

Sherry Polley

Sherry Polley was trained in printmaking at Herron School of Art + Design in Indianapolis. She has taken an interest in unconventional materials and working with digital methods. Her current work is created from sheets of adhesive vinyl that she cuts with a machine and assembles by hand. Expressive marks, saturated colors and glistening surface textures bring a playful energy to her work.

Steve Polston

Steve Polston earned his Master of Fine Arts degree in Photography at Academy of Art University (San Francisco) in December 2015. His exhibit Monuments of the City premiered March 4, 2016 at Bona Thompson Memorial Center Gallery in Irvington. During 2018, his works have appeared at Yeltser Art Center (Paducah, Ky.), IU-Kokomo Downtown Gallery (Kokomo, Ind.), Fletcher Place Arts (Indianapolis, Ind.), and Garfield Parks Art Center (Indianapolis, Ind.). He teaches Art Appreciation and Photography at IvyTech Community College in Indianapolis.

Jeannette Pomeroy

I have studied with renowned artists Graham Nickson, dean of the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture; and Miraslov Antic, instructor at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. I also has traveled extensively to many locales in Europe to hone my craft, sometimes alone and other times part of a group of artists, but always with the goal of becoming a better artist. I enjoy teaching as well as painting, and have a delightful group of dedicated students who enjoy after-school art lessons in my home studio in Fishers.

My name is Sam Posthumus a.k.a. Posthumus Art. I have been creating all of my life, using many different mediums, and I find my inspiration everywhere I am. I have been a working artist for over a decade. As a co-founder of the Beech Grove Artist Collective I took a strong interest in helping the community and have carried that with me ever since. Currently I am a resident artist at The Marilyn Rose Center in Indianapolis, Indiana. My style is largely influenced by many things including pop art, graffiti, and cartoons to name a few. I have a wonderful wife and daughter that I couldn’t do any of this without; I’m just happy to be here, creating.

William W. Potter

William Potter, Associate Professor in Foundation Studies, received his MFA degree in Painting from the University of Cincinnati’s school of Design, Art, Architecture and Planning (DAAP) and his BFA in Painting and Sculpture from the Columbus College of Art and Design. He was director of the Foundations Program from 2001-2011, and has been Herron Faculty President since 2009. He currently teaches in both foundation studies and Painting and Drawing. Exhibitions include “Hidden Forms Embedded Meanings at the Basile Gallery, “Touch Faith” at the Semantics Gallery curated by Jeffrey Cortland Jones, “Shaped” at the Manifest Gallery curated by Jason Franz, and “Constructed Paintings” at Indiana Wesleyan University. In 2007, He received the Arts Council of Indianapolis Creative Renewal Fellowship. The fellowship allowed for travel to Germany to study the Bauhaus and travel to the Chinati Foundation in Marfa, Texas to study the work of Donald Judd.

Greg Potter

Greg was born in Indianapolis and was raised by his parents, Jackie and Bryan, between Indiana and Illinois. Growing up, he would spend his summers at his grandparents’ farm in Morgan County. There, he developed a keen appreciation for animal behavior and art. When Greg finished high school, he joined the army with the expectation of using his military benefits to attend college after four years in the service. However, he found life in the military extremely rewarding and stayed there for over twenty years. Between 1990 and 2012, Greg was deployed four times to the Middle East. After his retirement in 2012, Greg finally embraced his passion for the arts and became a full-time artist. He took art classes at Franklin College under the guidance of Master David Cunningham. And, he started to take part in art fairs and display his work in art shows in the Indianapolis area. Greg often employs bold colors to paint animals in a surrealist manner and with beautiful landscapes in the background. Some of his animals are tourists, others are explorers, and a few are misfits. They may be in the Midwest, perhaps flying in a nest, sailing in a lake, or venturing to outer space. Greg gets inspiration for his art from conversations with friends and family. His animals convey a dimension of humanity that usually spark conversations among people. In the last years, Greg has become interested in public art and has painted several murals in the cities of Franklin and Shelbyville. He also does sculptures with recycled objects.

Creativity is the blood of my artwork. Without creativity I would not be able to express my true feelings and emotions through my art. I have created a style of art that allows me to do so in both a creative and an abstract manner. This style is something I have coined as ‘Digital Painting’. A digital painting is something that when viewing by an audience appears as if it was being shown on canvas. However, with the approach that I take, I place that same feeling into vector artwork, which is a mathematical based style of design, and create abstract images that have that brush stroke feeling. Being a vector image allows for the ability to print my images as small as a stamp or as large as a billboard and compromise nothing in the original art, keeping all lines, colors, and dimensions the exact same and to scale.

Joshua Powell is an artist from Indianapolis, IN, who handcrafts a strangely literate brand of psychedelic indie rock that manages to be simultaneously socially conscious and spiritually turbulent. Dana Powell Smith

Dana Powell-Smith is an abstract artist originally from New York, who honors her family and lineage through her process. As a wife, mother, and grandmother, Dana understands the power of art in generational healing and in attaining freedom. As the Granddaughter of Harlem Renaissance artist Georgette Seabrooke Powell, Dana was immersed in the art world from a young age. Her sweetest childhood memories were in joining her grandmother in DC as she activated in public spaces and in painting alongside other children, on the sidewalk and in the park. Dana continued to paint in private for more than a decade but never imagined her work would travel beyond her own home. After a traumatic brain injury almost thirty years ago, Dana laid her brush down for many years when Doctors told her she would not be able to work again. Rather than acquiesce to their limitations, Dana pushed herself to regaining her normal life, relearning how to walk again and even pursuing a new collegiate degree. Dana was never one to be told what she can and cannot do.

Brian James Priest

Since receiving my MFA in Visual Arts in 2007 from Washington University in St. Louis, I have held teaching and lecturer positions at Herron School of Art and Design, DePauw University and in the Department of Art and Design at California Polytechnic State University. I have experience instructing majors and non-majors across a wide breadth of disciplinary practices from traditional construction methods rooted in primarily formal concerns to the practical and conceptual ideology of new media. list of courses: Sculpture, Intermedia, Art Theory, 2D/3D design, Installation. Beyond teaching art, I maintain a thriving fine art practice where I show installations and drawings all over the world. Most recently in China, New Orleans, and San Francisco. Currently I am owner and work horse for KURB Design. A fabrication and design studio located in Indianapolis KURB is a full design studio working with all forms of digital and physical fabrication specializing in architectural rendering, web, graphic, exhibition/ interior design, marketing and branding.

Project One Studio

Project One Studio is a digital design + fabrication studio, founded by Adam Buente and Kyle Perry in 2009. After receiving graduate degrees in architecture, we shifted our direction and began creating work that spans the boundaries of art and architecture. The studio represents our combined view of design and artwork in the physical environment, and a focus on how each project has a specific goal, client, material strategy, or aesthetic quality. We are focused on craft and complexity, and strive to develop unique solutions to every project. We are interested in experimentation, learning new processes, and continually investigating different fabrication techniques and computational tools. Our flexibility and varying skill sets have allowed us to pursue a variety of scales, materials, and project types.

Daniel W. Pugh

After nearly 40 years of collegiate theater, Pugh is designing and building a variety of costumes for Landes Costumes by Rachel. Many of his costumes are historical or based on the antique and vintage patterns in his collection, which are the basis of the International Flat Pattern Repository and Exchange. His work in the preservation of these patterns earned him a 1999 Creative Renewal Fellowship from the Arts Council of Indianapolis.

Founder, artistic director, conductor “Musicians expect the conductor to be prepared, to know not only the ink (meter, entrances, and so on) but also the music’s essence (such as balance and articulations). Only a conductor who grasps a music’s motion and emotion can help musicians achieve the right sound quality.” Pamela Purpus formed Play Ethic, a sinfonietta in 2009, providing a stimulus package for central Indiana symphonic musicians. “Orchestral music is a global, timeless currency,” she notes. “As performers, we routinely invest in each other, for each other.” Purpus, who earned a master’s degree in horn performance at Indiana University, took a circuitous route to the podium: after suffering a freakish, life-threatening playing injury that unequivocally ended her professional horn career, Purpus dabbled with many instruments, from flute to doublebass—even landing the occasional job as freelance timpanist after studying under acclaimed Pittsburgh (Pa.) Symphony Orchestra timpanist Timothy Adams Jr. But since attending the inaugural Rose City International Conductor’s Workshop in Portland, Ore., Purpus quickly established herself as a promising young conductor. Recent gigs include stints as guest music director and conductor for the Doña Ana Lyric Opera at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, N.M.

Caroline Pyle

Each life has a story to tell. Painting has become the voice to share my story. The experience of a near fatal car accident had a transforming effect on me. Though I worked diligently in the field of public health prior to my accident, I now see clearly the connection between creativity and personal health. Consequently, I have cycled back to my artistic roots – embracing my passion for creativity in a more committed way. Using courage and determination as tools to pull myself through this catastrophic event, I now use painting as a positive vehicle for growth and development, while simultaneously communicating a sense of hope to the broader community.
