Carrie Baxter is from Northwest Illinois, and currently lives and works in Central Indiana. She graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in studio painting and a Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies from Northern Illinois University (NIU). Carrie’s artwork has been exhibited throughout the Midwest in juried and group exhibitions.

Way back in 1995, I took a wheel throwing class in my last year as an undergrad. I loved it! But I didn’t get near another wheel all through graduate school or for the next decade as I built my career in conservation. Life was and continues to be crazy busy as I play with maps at work, get to travel for work and fun, garden, camp, play and dance with my wonderful husband and friends.
In 2011, I got back behind the wheel again. I was delighted to find wonderful little studio, Beech Grove Clayworks, that offered affordable pottery classes nearby. Since then, I’ve been a member of the studio and have been obsessively throwing pots ever since! I still take classes at the BGCW and help out at the studio. Then I spend all the extra hours I can kicking the wheel in my tiny studio tucked into the corner of my garage in the Fountain Square neighborhood of Indianapolis.

My first published novel, Stacking in Rivertown, was purchased and edited in 1999 by Michael Korda, editor-in-chief of Simon & Schuster. It was released in 2000 and subsequently released in Australia and Israel.
In 2006, I teamed up with co-director Anna Lorentzon to create the feature documentary, Graphic Sexual Horror, about the shocking porn website Insex.com and how it was shut down through the use of the Patriot Act. Screening to sold-out audiences at Slamdance in 2009, it went on to screen at HotDocs Toronto, FantasiaFest Montreal, and many respected film festivals in Canada, Europe, and South America. Cinetic Rights Management purchased worldwied digital rights. Synapse Films purchased DVD rights.
Amazon.com released Graphic Sexual Horror in March 2010 for digital download and streaming. However, because of its use of highly controversial content, Amazon removed the movie from its listings within seven days. DVD released by Synapse Films Aug 10, 2010 was also censored, but the National Coalition Against Censorship (NCAA) and the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) worked with Amazon to relist the title. Available at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Toe Tag and other DVD websites. In 2015, IndieFlix will release the documentary on July 28.

I am presently working on a novel, finishing a screenplay, and putting together a multi-media blog called crib in a crackhood that chronicles life in one of the poorer sections of Indianapolis.

The process of my technique is that of obscuring images through a multitude of painted and varnished surfaces, collage materials and layers. The image is destroyed, obscured and then reactivated, thus suggesting the cycle and eroding power of time.
I am unconcerned about the explanation or easily extracted meaning of my work.
By not being immediately understandable, the content forces the viewer to participate in deciphering meaning for themselves.
Thus this way of seeing the act of creating has allowed my work to come to a place that does not simply deal with the reconstruction of an object for its own sake, but rather the mystifying and abstracting of personal meaning and symbolism.

By documenting my immediate world I am creating visual metaphors for common themes of life and the experiences we all share. I try to reveal something about myself to draw in the viewer and invite them to tap into their own life experiences – to see parts of themselves, to compare my images to their own memories, and create a feeling of commonality.
Cary Benbow is a photographer based in Greenfield, Indiana. After graduating with a BFA in photography from Ball State University, he worked in higher-education publishing for a dozen years before changing careers to work as a photographer, picture researcher and manager of an independent movie theatre. Cary is married to his high school sweetheart, and has 5 wonderful children.

McKayla Bensheimer is a sculptor and printmaker. She was raised in Franklin, Indiana and currently resides in Indianapolis, where she attends Herron School of Art and Design as a BFA candidate for sculpture. Bensheimer is interested in depicting the human experience through figural sculpture and portraiture in a variety of materials such as clay, steel, bronze, and two-dimensional mediums. Bensheimer has shown her work around the Indianapolis area. Her public works include a collaboration for a walkway mosaic installed in front of the Irvington Public Library.

My name is Katherine Musser Berry, but my friends and family mostly all call me Kally. I have been sketching and messing with paints for as long as I can remember, but have been selling paintings and working with The Art Bank Gallery since the summer of 2009. I love to create. My paintings are almost always acrylic or oil on canvas, but occassionally I mess around with watercolors and mixed media.
I grew up in Fishers, started school at St. Mary of the Woods College, then moved downtown Indianapolis to attend school at IUPUI. I ended up graduating with a B.A. in Communication Studies, and a Minor in Psychology. My husband and I have renovated two houses on the Near-West side, and I really have a heart for the change and growth the Near-West side of Indianapolis is experiencing. Painting is a hobby for me, however, since I gave birth to my son, William, I have been able to devote a lot more time to painting.

Pauline Beuke has been a business owner and artist for 30 years, running Pro-Art Gallery as a sole proprietor in Greenwood, IN. Pauline enjoys experimenting in many mediums, such as water color, oils and acrylics. Her signature is to utilize unusual fetish items within her art such as copper, crushed colored glass, found objects and jewelry. Some of her latest pieces can be seen hanging in the entrance of the new Stone Creek restaurant in Noblesville, IN. She has done hundreds of commission pieces for both commercial spaces and private residences. Pauline feels that it is a gift and a blessing to be able to do what she loves for a living and enjoys creating and experimenting with new techniques.

I first came to Indiana through the U.S. Army. I was stationed at Ft. Harrison teaching Television Graphics and Audio Visual Techniques to public relations students at the Defense Information School. While there, I also became the painting and drawing instructor for the Harrison Arts and Craft Center. During this time, I also became the illustrator and designer for a couple of post publications and my graphic arts career continued as I chose to remain in Indiana after my military service. From 1973 to 2006, I have held positions as illustrator, designer, screen printer, freelance artist, and art instructor, all while raising a family of five girls with my wonderful wife. I am currently doing commission work and limited edition prints of my art through my own marketing name I call Limited Expressions. Much of my inspiration comes from personal experiences with family and friends out of an expression of love and caring for those individuals, which I try to convey through my commission work as well.

My art is about oppositional forces. A combination of the real and the surreal comprise the subjects and settings of my work. I work in both painterly and draughtsman-like techniques, and use these seemingly contrasting approaches to lend visual tension to each piece. Finished pieces tend to still appear raw and uncompromising, as I try to show the thought processes and hypotheses that I’ve struggled with throughout the piece, presenting the research as the finished product.
I view the piece as a working equation, as my thought processes and experimentation combined to create a visual solution. By utilizing internal conflict, juxtaposing medium, scale, and subject, I force the viewer to not only view, but to think. By contrasting scale within one particular piece, I’ve taken a subtle surface of an everyday object and transformed it into the environment of a distant and alien world. In another piece, I’ve reinvented a classic religious motif and icon for modern times. In my work, I like to leave the viewer with more questions than answers, which keeps the work fresh and intriguing, inspiring a unique outlook from each viewer. Most recently, exploring the ideas of transhumanism and technological progress has come to the forefront of my work. I draw inspiration from these elements, and form artwork for a technologically obsessed modern society, progressing and multiplying at breakneck speed.

The circle element is constant in my work, it is a representative of the never ending cycle of life that we all experience. Taking a serendipitous approach by utilizing this spherical element allows me to experiment with color and movement to represent this sacred mark as a whole. Strong intentional movement creates a muscular tension reminiscent of the sacred spirals found in architecture, forests, and religious and spiritual entities throughout time.
Fabric as a medium has always been a strong voice in my work. Utilizing hand dyed fabrics or batiks combined with polymers allows for a depth to become luminescent. Color, emotion, and movement play intuitively in my creations.
My current series, “Tempest”, explores the churning, the unknown, the continuous cycle of movement and the culmination of color and textures to create a balance of emotion, movement and beauty in the upheaval that storms of all kinds can bring.

My unique pieces are constructed by hand using traditional metalsmithing techniques and tools with skills I have acquired over years of devoted practice and self-teaching. My intent is to design modern heirlooms for creative-minded collectors in search of original and timeless pieces; rare jewelry for the wearer to cherish in the present and hand down through the generations.

I am an abstract mixed media artist who works primarily with alcohol inks and acrylic ink on Yupo. I find inspiration from all aspects of life: nature, poetry, pop culture, spirituality, ancient symbols, and relationships.

In this current age of consumerism and corporation, there exist places that are not concerned with identity. They are neither relational nor historical in the same traditional sense that they have been in the past. These “non-places” are areas of transience that are not significant enough to be regarded as a place. My current body of work dwells within these benign areas of non-place. This series of paintings captures specific moments of isolation within airports, supermarkets, new housing developments, subways, and hotels. They exhibit the presence of modernity and the absence of humanity during periods when commercial activity has ceased and places are now vacant.
To translate the ideas of non-place, modernity and isolation into the visual quality of my work, I incorporate crisp, high-definition, contrasting color and the strong presence of light. I reference these cinematic elements to embody ideas of stark, impersonal space. Films such as Brad Anderson’s The Machinist, Zack Synder’s 300 and Dr. Mark Romanck’s One Hour Photo influence my choices of lighting, volume and perspective. Like these films, my paintings seek to establish a sense of uneasiness, dislocation and foreboding for the viewer. Depictions of low-ceilings, long hallways and dead ends characterize the lack of hope and the abundant nature of capitalism.

The work of Ryan Blake shows an influence of nature and natural processes. Blake’s work also displays a simplicity of form. He holds in high regard, those cultures which are centered on a balance as well spiritually display a connection to nature. Blake’s exploration of other mediums led him back into ceramics with an even deeper sense of meaning. His beliefs around art as communication is not limited to clay; even though there is a sense of loyalty shown to it. To Blake, clay has a healing power; clay is therapy. Clay is a means to connect with people; to bring meaning and make sense of this world.
