Chitra Ramanathan

Chitra Ramanathan is a contemporary Indian American visual artist and art educator. Her distinguished, predominantly large-scale abstract conceptual mixed media and acrylic paintings are in corporate and private collections as acquisitions, and featured as site-specific public art installations including murals. Combining intense colors with layers of varied textural materials often incorporated into the paint, each of the artist’s unique originals interact with light as to visually and physically extend the boundaries of the two-dimensional surface. Inspired by intensely colorful, yet ephemeral garden blooms and changing seasons inspire the e artist to visually portray happiness, comparing both fleeting and cyclical. The hint of circles almost always present in her paintings signify the cycle of nature. Chitra Ramanathan received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1993, majoring in Painting with honors, and her M.B.A in 1997 with concentrations in Human Resources and Art Museum Administration from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Following her B.F.A degree, her paintings were recognized by art critics through exhibitions on Broadway, New York, with numerous originals acquired within the U.S and abroad and site-specific public art commissions based on her style and concept. Interviews with the artist by eclectic publications with biography and images have been featured in various magazine and book publications include Who’s Who in America, Askart.com, the Internet Movie Database (IMDB), International Contemporary Artists, Vol 1. available on Amazon.com, the Indianapolis Business Journal, Indianapolis Monthly Home, Luxury Real Estate Magazine among others. Chitra Ramanathan is a Visitor Artist invitee to the Royal Academy of Arts, London U.K, requested by the Keeper of the Royal Academy Schools for a visual presentation of her body of work, artist talk, tour completed along with conducting student tutorials in 2005.

Kierra Ready is a self-taught artist based in Indianapolis, IN. Her paintings are inspired by her own internal reflections and messages of hope she would like to share with the world. Kierra’s preferred medium is acrylic paint on canvas however she often creates mixed media pieces using oil pastel and cutouts. It is important that Kierra Ready share her creative gifts with others. Kierra provides a number of artistic services including commissioned portraits, murals, private and corporate paint parties and live event painting.

Nathaniel Kyng Rhodes

Kyng Rhodes is a full-time visual artist, having been in love with creating art his entire life he attended college to obtain a degree in graphic design in favor of a creative career, but his true love is embedded in illustration, street art, and fine art alike. During the pandemic of 2020, Rhodes made the decision to leave the workforce, and become a full-time creative. This decision came about through the encouragement of friends, and loved ones, and Rhodes’ own experience participating in Indianapolis’ version of the “Black Lives Mater” Mural in which Rhodes’ painted the ”B” in the black on the historic Indiana Avenue. Rhodes’ work is expressionistic, with several goals intended. He draws inspiration from his thoughts, and feelings towards the events that he has experienced or sighted through the media, observation of society, and his personal life infused with his spirituality. His work has a strong focus on color, and shadow with varying incorporations of symbolism.

I am inspired by the memories I associate with my identity, the effects of emotional labor, and the associated stereotypes. I use unique forms of storytelling to share concepts rooted in my own life. Each piece is a reflection of these experiences, and that of others. We can all relate to wearing masks to achieve the accepted standard within our own combination of subgroups. Growing up semi-isolated did not make me exempt from being implanted with habitual patterns, but it did allow time for me to develop an uncommon perspective.

Stephanie Lewis Robertson

Much like a musical conversation, Stephanie Lewis Robertson sings to her hand-dyed and –printed fabrics while she works. Spirituality, ritual, nature, music, the concept of the “last worst time” and the current state of the world serve as the inspiration for the fabric and paper constructions. Ms. Robertson is the Program Chair for Fine Arts at Ivy Tech Community College, Central Indiana region. She holds a MFA (1994, University of Georgia) and a BFA (1981, Miami University) in Fabric Design. Her work is included in several corporate and private collections and she is also a teaching artist with Arts for Learning of Indiana. In 2017, she was accepted into Religion Spirituality and the Arts V. Among her other awards and grants are three Individual Artists Grants from the Indiana Arts Commission, an Arts in the Park grant (2017), Second Place Three Dimensional Work in Artistry in Fiber 2016 and Best of Show, Artistry in Fiber 2014, Second Place (2015) and First and Third Place (2011) in Surface Design at the Indiana State Fair, recipient of the Stutz Artists Association Studio Space in 2002, and an Arts Council of Indianapolis Creative Renewal Fellowship in 2001. Rebecca Robinson

Award-winning mixed media artist, Rebecca Robinson studied fashion design in Atlanta, Ga., and continued her education at North Carolina Central University where she majored in Art/ Visual Communications and graduated with high honors. Her background also includes art history, photography, graphic design, film, and creative marketing/branding. Rebecca was mostly known for her fashion design company PSNOB (pronounced snob) which launched in 2001 but in recent years, has taken a new direction with her craft. In the spring of 2019, Rebecca began the initial stages of forming her nonprofit organization called “ONE ARRT ”, which will become the first black-owned art supply brand that specifically supports all artists, art organizations, art education, museums/galleries, and communities in need who would prosper with proper funding and resources. Rebecca has also contributed to several nonprofit organizations throughout the country by auctioning her one-of-a-kind handbags and fine art. Rebecca’s artwork has been featured in dozens of media outlets including; Indianapolis Business Journal Podcast, WFYI, NUVO, Jezebel Magazine Atlanta, Pattern Magazine, Indianapolis Star, Indianapolis Recorder, New York Examiner, WTHR 13, WISH-TV 8. RTV 6, FOX 59, Creative Mornings Indianapolis, Indianapolis Monthly Magazine, The National Endowment Of The Arts including the Black Creativity Exhibit at the Chicago Museum of Science and History of her painting of jazz legend Miles Davis In the summer of 2019, Rebecca was selected by the Arts Council of Indianapolis to showcase her work for the annual High Art Billboard project (2019-2020). Rebecca is also a self-published author of the book “Arts Honor”. In 2018, Rebecca co-produced the award-winning documentary film “The Color of Medicine”: The Story of Homer G. Phillips as a tribute to her father and grandfather. In honor of the historic documentary film, Rebecca received an official scroll from Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas from the county of Los Angeles for her contribution to preserving an important part of history and giving back to the community of St. Louis and beyond. In the summer of 2020, Rebecca became a member of the art collective “EIGHTEEN” who created the street mural Black Lives Matter on Historic Indiana Avenue in Indianapolis during the Black Lives Matter movement. Rebecca is a proud member of the Kurt Vonnegut Museum Planning Committee, The Indianapolis Black Documentary Film Festival Advisory Committee, and African American History Committee Advisory Board for the Indianapolis Public Library.

Marla Roddy

Marla Roddy was born and raised in Johnstown, PA. She holds an MFA from Indiana University and a BFA in Sculpture and BA in Art History from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. Marla is the Assistant Registrar for Exhibitions at the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields and is a studio member at Beech Grove Clay Works. Her work has been exhibited throughout the U.S. and is in the collection of the Centre Pompidou, Paris.

I am an artist and photographer currently living and working in Indiana (and visiting as much of the rest of the world as I can). I love reading almost as much as I love making beautiful art, and nearly always incorporate books, literature, or esoteric knowledge into my photographs. I am a self proclaimed nerd who loves Doctor Who, Alice in Wonderland, Harry Potter, Peter Pan, and Neil Gaiman. I am fascinated by stories as well as the sea, and I am in love with underwater photography (yes in Indiana). The name for Lusicovi Creative comes from my Armenian heritage. “Lus” means “light” and “Covi” means “sea.” Most importantly, I believe in magic. Not in the sense of wands and wizards and spells, but in an everyday sort of magic. I believe in the magic of people. Of what they can do and achieve with passion and love and determination. Of how they can connect with other people and the world around them on a daily basis. I believe that there is a powerful type of magic in human connections, that emotions are how we connect, and I believe in capturing and spreading that magic and imagination to inspire the world.

Mark Rouse

After years of studying, teaching and creating art, mostly acrylic paintings, I was diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy. I was pronounce legally blind! One of the things that I feared the most was that I would never paint again. I started looking for a way to create, in spite of my diminished vision. This led to my current technique – a hybrid of traditional painting and digital assistance. You see, I discovered that by hooking my computer up to my 55 inch TV I could zoom in and do my work. Now, my vision is back to normal. With the help of a very good doctor and a couple miracles along the way, my vision was restored.

Dealing with severe mental issues since a young age, art and design have always been outlets to solidify my true raw emotions at any particular time. I was blessed to enter and participate in the Avon High School art Show in 2019, and has been eager to continue displaying art ever since.

I am the current president of the Hendricks County Arts Council and graduate from Herron School of Art and Design, holding a Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts. I create my work with an assortment of paint (enamels, acrylics and watercolors) to create paintings or assembling seamless combinations of imaginative compositions. Many of these illustrations have been influenced by things found in real life and in nature.

Many of my small paintings on re-used packaging reflect images I see on my East Side: street style; architecture and interiors; people of different ethnicities. Others express spiritual themes; faith traditions; peace in nature. Some are simply whimsies: imagined moments, places, patterns. Travels and quiet time spent in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula are sources of inspiration. Original paintings- from fleeting thoughts and mental images to the act of applying paint to cardboard surface- on a material meant to be disposed of after consumption of the product, is somehow purposeful and satisfying to me. Nine years ago my husband and I purchased an abandoned house in the old Holy Cross neighborhood, just east of the downtown, and restored it; my “studio” is my kitchen table. Our little 1880’s cottage is the only original home on the block, as an explosion of new construction changes the profile of these Irish immigrant houses. I hope Holy Cross can maintain a balance between old and new, and that the diversity in home ownership of our neighborhood won’t be lost. Mary Beth is an Indianapolis loving Visionary Artist, and Live Painter. As a Visionary Artist, Mary Beth’s creative process is her spiritual practice– oftentimes her paintings are her prayers. In her day to day life she intentionally works to cultivate the right spiritual food to fuel her paintings. Her work typically features mystical themes, as well as symbolism which generally emerges from her time spent in meditation, books that she’s reading, and experiences observed throughout collective humanity. Mary Beth’s hope for her work is to illuminate a wider version of awareness so that others might see their divine potential, along with what else is available beyond the veil. When Mary Beth is not in her studio painting, she can be found painting murals, or at various music festivals creating works by the stage. Additionally, Mary Beth offers meditative workshops where participants get the opportunity to look deeply within themselves and create a meaningful self-portrait in her “painting with light” style.

The Tree Lady is who I am. I am a woman who loves life, family,traveling, sunsets, sunrises, hiking, walking in the rain, the beach, many other things & . . . TREES !!! TREES !!! TREES !!! In 2011 I began painting, drawing, sketching trees on tshirts and then moved on to creating TreeLady blank greeting cards. There’s nothing like receiving a card someone took the time to find, purchase, write a line or two and mail. It tends to bring a huge smile I climbed trees often as a child and found peace there. Trees are like arms reaching for the sky; or branches, embracing us, protecting us. Trees don’t judge us. Trees give us peace. I love sitting under a tree or sitting on a branch up in a tree, just being ! I still climb trees when the opportunity presents itself. Hug a tree, it’s pretty cool. A tree will never betray your trust and always keep your secrets. If you listen closely a tree will speak to you. My Moms dementia brought me back here to Indy, where I was raised. During 2020, trees gave me a new journey, filled with gratitude and grace. Nothing was moving, however everything was blooming, growing and beautiful, even though death was all around, up close, personal and downright terrifying. I found grace, I found gratitude, I found beauty in that leaf I saw transform, change color and start again. I construct, draw and paint trees. I pour tons of love into my canvasses and you feel the love, spirit and roots of life. My goal : your eyes see the beauty, your heart fills with love and your spirit is full of gratitude for the beauty of the moment.

“Often we hear the phrase ‘it’s only your imagination’, but what is imagination, really? The psychologist C. G. Jung defined it as the experience of an inner unknown territory historically perceived as the domain of the spirit. He wrote that spirit is that factor in the inner field of vision, which creates images and organizes them into a meaningful order. Each ensuing image is a progression and development, thus the spirit leads you somewhere. These paintings were created over the course of many months of receptivity to this inner world. By sharing this experience with society through art, the artist provides a point of departure and recognition for those who, willingly or unwillingly, are encountering the spiritual world. In this way the artist allows the spirit access to the shaping of the culture and offers people the possibility of an understanding of the spirit of the age in which they live.”

Cassondra Stukofski is an Indy-based multidisciplinary artist specializing in print, papermaking, and book arts. She graduated in 2008 with a B.F.A. in printmaking from Herron School of Art + Design. Cassie grew up near the small town of Star City on a farm in northern Indiana. She spent summers camping and fishing in Minnesota, practicing art whenever possible. She currently resides in SoBro, working as a freelance artist-designer and production picture framer at In.Site Art Consulting, and her home studio, Bunnywood Creations.

Life’s Principles Are A Universal Language This started as a concept to instill confidence and a sense of self worth in my daughters. The idea grew as I became aware of the bond that my daughters share with females and all peoples of this world. Power, Passion, Personality, Promise, Praise, Perseverance, Progress, Pride, Prestige, no matter the language, no matter the background these 9 traits are inherent in us all. To that end I sought people who spoke different languages, to see if they had words that mirrored the English equivalent of the positive words. Learning the different translations of the words was an adventure in and of itself. The first languages I explored were Spanish and Urdu. I looked up the international Disability symbols Latin and Portuguese on the computer. I contacted a family friend in Louisiana and 2 universities to get the Creole translations. For Cherokee, I explored the Cherokee Nation website and was put in contact with their language department. Romanian, Bosnian and Igbo come from co-workers and church members, each speaking their native tongue. I went to the Japanese cultural center to receive the Japanese translations. I utilized the services of the Language Training Center of Indiana, Indy Translations, LUNA Language Services. I owe a big debt of gratitude for the all the language assistance that I received in putting this project together. Some languages translate loosely but the goal was to come as close to the actual definitions of the 9 words and phrases. The words and their definitions are color coded for effect and to spark imaginations, self reflection and conversation. Principles of Life features a children’s book Girls…are all the above.

Theoni is my exploration of sewing as a form of expression. I learned how to sew as a child from my mother by making clothing for my dolls. For years I sewed out of practicality, mending garments and making halloween costumes. It wasn’t until more recently that I began to treat a needle and thread as pen and paper, working towards translating flat images through textiles. I currently find my inspiration in experiences of struggle and redemption. I often use photos and real life experiences to create patterns I turn into textile pieces.

Hi, I’m BA Thomas. I currently work out of my home in downtown Indianapolis, IN. I graduated in 2015 from a small liberal arts school called Covenant College in Chattanooga, Tennessee and shortly after, I began an internship at the arts-focused Harrison Center here in Indy. I’ve worked a few part-time jobs over the last 6 years, but have continuously kept my art practice as the main focus of my career, periodically holding studios at the Harrison Center and 201 Studios through November of 2020. Collage and digital illustration are my mediums of choice, though I occasionally work with oils, gouache, and printmaking to keep my practice fresh. I’ve participated in various group shows throughout the Indianapolis art scene since 2015, completed two murals, two public works, and exhibited solo at least once a year since 2017. I continue my practice with the immense support of my husband, Grant, and my faithful patrons.
