Amiah Mims

Amiah Mims is an ever-growing designer and painter. Residing in Indianapolis, the 29-year-old is a 2015 graduate of Kent State University where she majored in Visual Communication Design and minored in Photo Illustration. She is also a retired KSU collegiate level gymnast and MAC Champion. Until recently, she was a full-time Graphic Designer for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. However, her need to invest more into her organic artistic talents motivated her to take a leap of faith and branch out on her own. Now she offers a wider range of her creative services as a freelance designer, a professional artist and muralist, under her newly-founded company, Works By Mimsy LLC. Amiah has always had the creative talent, but has only tapped into it with intention as of late. Learning to utilize her abilities to their full capability has been an empowering journey, and she continues to strive to take who she is, who she wants to be and what she can do, and use it for a purpose greater than herself. To date, a few of her art career highlights include the Welcome Race Fans project (2019), the Indy BLM Street Mural project (2020), the Indianapolis Recorder building mural (2020) and the Goodwill/Cook Medical 38th St. building murals.

Isaiah Morris-Henderson

My name is Isaiah Morris-Henderson. I am a visual artist who is native to Indy. At the moment I use mainly colored pencils but occasionally use charcoal, graphic, ink, and water color in my pieces. In this upcoming year I am looking to expand my range, explore different mediums, and produce as much work as possible.

Baley Murphy

I grew up in a toxic environment where my role models were my abusive, alcoholic parents, and my heroin-addicted brother. Most nights were filled with arguments, screaming, and violence. My only escape was through my art. My safe haven was a locked door, calming music, and a brush. I truly believe that art is the reason I was able to avoid being sucked into this toxic environment, and for this reason, I can write this letter today. I owe my life to art. It was, and always will be, my therapy. I was able to block out the yelling and create new worlds and environments to thrive in. This is where my passion radiates. I want to show the world just how powerful art can be, and how it can heal people mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. I want to help people. My career goal is to work in a hospital or hospice with children. I want to help give them the childhood they are missing because they are sick. I empathize with them. I had to grow up way too fast in my environment and that just sucks. I want to help improve their quality of life, even if it is for a short while. It is worth it to know you made a difference in someone’s life, for an hour a day, twice a week. They could forget they were sick for a bit and just be a kid, and I want to be that person for them. I am an extremely dedicated, devoted, and passionate individual. I know I can make a difference if I am given the opportunity to learn, create, and conquer in this program. All I need is a platform to shine.

Whether it is through the lens of photography or through the stroke of a paint brush, I am most content when I have the freedom to bring beautiful things to life. My style has changed and evolved over the years, as I experiment with different mediums. However, I have always considered myself an abstract expressionist. Having a natural affinity toward bright colors and whimsical movement in my work, I love to tell stories and make people feel something. I cannot help but create. And so I will. May all who encounter my work be moved, inspired, and blessed by what they see and feel. And I also happen to be a homeschooling mama to six of the MOST amazing kiddos on this planet!

Melissa Parrott Quimby

Melissa Parrott Quimby is a contemporary visual artist who emphasizes the movement of shape and color in her paper collages, ceramic forms, abstract paintings and intuitive drawings. Her work is charged by the activity of creating a mark to capture a specific moment in time. Through a selective process of integrating bold, vivid hues she creates dynamic imagery that commands a rhythm of space inspired by nature. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in ceramics from Herron School of Art & Design in 1995 and her Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Delaware in 2003. Her work has been exhibited both regionally and nationally while being recognized with a variety of awards including a Creative Renewal Arts Fellowship from the Arts Council of Indianapolis in 2007 and Art in the Parks and Historic Sites from the Indiana Arts Commission in 2018. She has taught numerous workshops and currently teaches foundations and drawing at Herron School of Art & Design.

Orlando Pelaez

I studied drawing, painting and graphic design, trained by Colombian masters back in the1960s. I then migrated to NYC in the 1970s where I had the opportunity to attend some classic arts schools, especially the renowned “Art Students League of New York.” I also worked for a department store doing visual merchandising. All of this training combined made me “a Jack of all trades.” Thanks to that, I have been able to survive as an artist all these years by being able to create visual art without limitations in several mediums. That vision I had as a child when I used to draw cartoon characters, my first Prismacolor drawing contest award at the Simon Bolivar park in downtown Medellin, my elementary school teachers pulling me out of my classroom to draw class subject matters for them on their chalk boards, etc. helped me build confidence as an artist at a time when I totally struggled with my academic education, particularly math. It was obvious to my parents and teachers that I belonged in the creative world making great works of art! No question about it. Moving to Indiana was my destiny after I met and found the love of my life, Alesa Stanley. I met my wife in NYC while she was attending Hanover College and collecting research data at the UN’s bookstore where I was working as a sales person. Indianapolis was a smaller city back then with a different atmosphere: green surroundings, clean, simple life, low cost of living and friendly. Opportunities for artists at the time were rather low however. One of my first opportunities to apply my art talent was given to me by the Hispano American Center on East Street near College and Massachusetts Avenues, where I did a series of large works depicting cultural Latin American images. I got my first full time job working for The William H. Block Co. Dept. Store in downtown Indy where I was able to develop my visual expertise further while being coached by professionals in the field; great carpenters and painters that been there since the 1940s. I did learn a lot from them! I am truly blessed to have a great family and a very supportive wife and children and to live in a community that supports the Arts even though its image is based

Myra Perrin

Artist Bio Myra is an Indiana based sculptor/artist/educator. She received her BFA in Furniture Design from the Herron School of Art in Indianapolis. She has been teaching joyfully in Indianapolis for several years. She teaches from her studio and at Marc Adams School of Woodworking. Her work enlivens both private and public collections. My name is Sam Posthumus a.k.a. Posthumus Art. I have been creating all of my life, using many different mediums, and I find my inspiration everywhere I am. I have been a working artist for over a decade. As a co-founder of the Beech Grove Artist Collective I took a strong interest in helping the community and have carried that with me ever since. Currently I am a resident artist at The Marilyn Rose Center in Indianapolis, Indiana. My style is largely influenced by many things including pop art, graffiti, and cartoons to name a few. I have a wonderful wife and daughter that I couldn’t do any of this without; I’m just happy to be here, creating.

Dana Powell Smith

Dana Powell-Smith is an abstract artist originally from New York, who honors her family and lineage through her process. As a wife, mother, and grandmother, Dana understands the power of art in generational healing and in attaining freedom. As the Granddaughter of Harlem Renaissance artist Georgette Seabrooke Powell, Dana was immersed in the art world from a young age. Her sweetest childhood memories were in joining her grandmother in DC as she activated in public spaces and in painting alongside other children, on the sidewalk and in the park. Dana continued to paint in private for more than a decade but never imagined her work would travel beyond her own home. After a traumatic brain injury almost thirty years ago, Dana laid her brush down for many years when Doctors told her she would not be able to work again. Rather than acquiesce to their limitations, Dana pushed herself to regaining her normal life, relearning how to walk again and even pursuing a new collegiate degree. Dana was never one to be told what she can and cannot do.

I am an illustrator and artist who works as a full-time graphic designer by day. My go-to mediums are gouache, ink, watercolor, and digital drawing and painting on Procreate on my iPad. However, I adore art in all of its forms and I am always excited to try new mediums and experiment. From veeeery early on in my life, my mom read picture books to my siblings and me, and I fell in love with illustration and creating characters and stories from an early age. I was constantly drawing my favorite characters like The Powerpuff Girls and Ariel from The Little Mermaid. Nerd confession: I would always get excited when it would rain in elementary school because that would mean indoor recess and I could spend that time drawing, haha! I love to illustrate ordinary people, animals, and objects in everyday life. I am a firm believer that the ordinary is extraordinary! There is a certain whimsy to the little moments of each day and I want to capture that cozy feeling in my work. I love to create environments and characters that are friendly, inviting, warm, and a little bit magical.

Artist, Healer, Mama, Student of planetary shifts and the mystic, my passion lies in speaking through images on paper and facilitating others as they connect with their creative fire and unexpressed power. I am a mixed-media artist known for weaving together a variety of substrates and materials while playing with the idea of Spirit, energy and the unseen pieces that make us who we are. I enjoy exploring each medium’s range of applications and limits which, in turn inspires the feel of what I do. I am inspired by visceral sensations and fully embodied moments, pleasure, identity and communal resonance. Through layers of paper and fabric, watercolor and ink, pencil and spray paint, a depth and an atmosphere are created. This is a subjective space beyond the restrictions of our cultures and our learned identities, an alternate reality. In this space, I explore the tension between being and becoming, articulations of striving and receiving and a communion of Selves. In this space I offer an invitation to explore one’s resonance with the potential energy of change and expansion. I offer an invitation to try on a new vision of one’s Self, an energetic impression. Who are we? Who do we want to be?

Gary Renegar

Gary Renegar Exquisite Renderings Artist in residence, Columbus IN Memberships: Former juried artist with the Hamilton County Artists’ Association and a former member of Nickel Plate Arts Bio: Gary is a retired Administrator living and working in Columbus Indiana. He is a Ball State University Graduate with a Baccalaureate of Science (1979) and a Master of Arts (1980) in General and Experimental Psychology with a minor in Art. Gary enjoyed a successful career in his field of study and retired in 2008 to focus exclusively on new and better ways to utilize his artistic abilities, including the use of different mediums and techniques. Currently he focuses on pastel, pastel/chalk and pencil on various heavy surfaces. Current and past exhibits: Two exhibits themed “Light”, and “Beauty” with the Meridian Street Gallery, Indianapolis IN, (2015). Past exhibits with the HCAA: “The Naked Truth” at the Birdie Gallery. Exhibition piece “Iris” (2016). “The Pursuit of Excellence” exhibit at the Birdie Gallery. (2016). Exhibition pieces “Ortus Veneris” and “Autumn Flight”. Awarded first prize for the work “Autumn Flight” . Exhibited two pastels at the Cool Creek Nature Center in Carmel, IN , winning honorable mention for the landscape titled “Solo” (2017). Exhibited with Nickel Plate Arts at the First Presbyterian Church, Noblesville under the theme “Christ In The Arts” with the pieces “Holy Family” and “Risen”, both pastel/chalk renderings (2017). Scheduled themed exhibit “The Human Condition” with the RAPP Gallery at the Indiana Landmark Center, August 2017. =================== My approach to art: I define my work as representational, depicting recognizable themes in a style of my choosing. I prefer to work with little reliance on external reference, instead offering my own interpretations. My work is eclectic which allows the exploration of varied genres using the mediums of pencil, chalk, pastel and oil.

I am inspired by the memories I associate with my identity, the effects of emotional labor, and the associated stereotypes. I use unique forms of storytelling to share concepts rooted in my own life. Each piece is a reflection of these experiences, and that of others. We can all relate to wearing masks to achieve the accepted standard within our own combination of subgroups. Growing up semi-isolated did not make me exempt from being implanted with habitual patterns, but it did allow time for me to develop an uncommon perspective.

Rebecca Robinson

Award-winning mixed media artist, Rebecca Robinson studied fashion design in Atlanta, Ga., and continued her education at North Carolina Central University where she majored in Art/ Visual Communications and graduated with high honors. Her background also includes art history, photography, graphic design, film, and creative marketing/branding. Rebecca was mostly known for her fashion design company PSNOB (pronounced snob) which launched in 2001 but in recent years, has taken a new direction with her craft. In the spring of 2019, Rebecca began the initial stages of forming her nonprofit organization called “ONE ARRT ”, which will become the first black-owned art supply brand that specifically supports all artists, art organizations, art education, museums/galleries, and communities in need who would prosper with proper funding and resources. Rebecca has also contributed to several nonprofit organizations throughout the country by auctioning her one-of-a-kind handbags and fine art. Rebecca’s artwork has been featured in dozens of media outlets including; Indianapolis Business Journal Podcast, WFYI, NUVO, Jezebel Magazine Atlanta, Pattern Magazine, Indianapolis Star, Indianapolis Recorder, New York Examiner, WTHR 13, WISH-TV 8. RTV 6, FOX 59, Creative Mornings Indianapolis, Indianapolis Monthly Magazine, The National Endowment Of The Arts including the Black Creativity Exhibit at the Chicago Museum of Science and History of her painting of jazz legend Miles Davis In the summer of 2019, Rebecca was selected by the Arts Council of Indianapolis to showcase her work for the annual High Art Billboard project (2019-2020). Rebecca is also a self-published author of the book “Arts Honor”. In 2018, Rebecca co-produced the award-winning documentary film “The Color of Medicine”: The Story of Homer G. Phillips as a tribute to her father and grandfather. In honor of the historic documentary film, Rebecca received an official scroll from Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas from the county of Los Angeles for her contribution to preserving an important part of history and giving back to the community of St. Louis and beyond. In the summer of 2020, Rebecca became a member of the art collective “EIGHTEEN” who created the street mural Black Lives Matter on Historic Indiana Avenue in Indianapolis during the Black Lives Matter movement. Rebecca is a proud member of the Kurt Vonnegut Museum Planning Committee, The Indianapolis Black Documentary Film Festival Advisory Committee, and African American History Committee Advisory Board for the Indianapolis Public Library.

The Tree Lady is who I am. I am a woman who loves life, family,traveling, sunsets, sunrises, hiking, walking in the rain, the beach, many other things & . . . TREES !!! TREES !!! TREES !!! In 2011 I began painting, drawing, sketching trees on tshirts and then moved on to creating TreeLady blank greeting cards. There’s nothing like receiving a card someone took the time to find, purchase, write a line or two and mail. It tends to bring a huge smile I climbed trees often as a child and found peace there. Trees are like arms reaching for the sky; or branches, embracing us, protecting us. Trees don’t judge us. Trees give us peace. I love sitting under a tree or sitting on a branch up in a tree, just being ! I still climb trees when the opportunity presents itself. Hug a tree, it’s pretty cool. A tree will never betray your trust and always keep your secrets. If you listen closely a tree will speak to you. My Moms dementia brought me back here to Indy, where I was raised. During 2020, trees gave me a new journey, filled with gratitude and grace. Nothing was moving, however everything was blooming, growing and beautiful, even though death was all around, up close, personal and downright terrifying. I found grace, I found gratitude, I found beauty in that leaf I saw transform, change color and start again. I construct, draw and paint trees. I pour tons of love into my canvasses and you feel the love, spirit and roots of life. My goal : your eyes see the beauty, your heart fills with love and your spirit is full of gratitude for the beauty of the moment.

If you talk to me in person, I could probably tell you about one of the things I’m interested in and dive into that, but to explain that I’m a mixed media artist who also sings, streams and teaches is kind of hard to pull together simply. Though I guess I just did. I live up in Noblesville, Indiana. I’m currently 42. My health isn’t great, so I work from home now, and work pretty small because my office is also my art/music studio, though I’d love to have a large studio one day to work on mural pieces that can be hung, as well as installation art. I’ve fronted bands off and on for 15 years, but the health curbed that too, so I’m often doing singing or art streams.

Maya Simone (Tonya Parham) is an artist and writer on many platforms with a multitude of various expressions. She has written inspirational and thought-provoking essays about social justices, and poetry about current events as well as her heartfelt hopes for humanity. She is driven to inspire others to live the most authentic and empowering life by being true to oneself in a society that thrives on masking. She has been propelled forward to unapologetically express herself from the depths of her soul through written words, movement, art and speech.

Nicholas Smith

Nicholas Smith is a mixed-media artist born and raised in Indianapolis, IN. He is a graduate of the Visual Arts and Humanities magnets at Broad Ripple High School, as well as a graduate of Butler University with a major in Recording Industry Studies and a minor in Art + Design. Nick’s current body of work consists mostly of abstract paintings, drawings, and mixed media pieces which are often based around a stream of conscious process. Nicholas has collaborated on murals at various places around Indianapolis, including Einstein Bros. Bagels in Broad Ripple, as well as the Peace Learning Center in Eagle Creek State Park. Nick is also a producer and DJ, working under the pseudonym “Mandog”, and can be found performing or recording with various artists in the greater Indianapolis area. #ManDogHandPaw

Rejine Smith

Rejine Smith is my birth name but my chosen name is Queenie P. I started sketching when I was around 8 years old. I used to use sketching, coloring, and crafts as a form to escape. I picked up a paint brush in 2018 just to see if I could. When I painted my first canvas I was excited. I wanted to create more art for children, so I started to make a bunch of cartoons. I began to expand and see what I can paint. I started to see my craft get better and better and to see that transform more and more was an excitement for me. It gave me a rush. Now I am eager for everyone to see my content and my creations. A lot of my inspiration has to do with the experiences I have everyday but I am also inspired by other people as well. Mostly enjoy working on graffiti, pop art, cartoons, collages and Afrocentric art. I use mostly acrylic for my paintings but I also use a variety of mixed media. I also specialize in 3D artwork, murals, custom clothing, custom shoes, and many more. Art is something I enjoy doing and will always give me a peace of mind. I have always had a love of art and once I started to learn who I was throughout my spiritual journey, I realized this is something I want to do for my life. This is something I am passionate about. This is a way I can share a bit of myself with everyone.
