About My Work:

 

Many years ago, while on a trip with my sister, we became lost in the night.

 

We were driving in an unfamiliar part of the country and the road was obscured with fog.  Even though it was three o¹clock in the morning, I couldn’t help being fascinated with the scene in front of us.  The oncoming headlights of the other cars, the looming hills and trees and the glow of the pavement was a painting in motion. 

 

 

 

Since that time I have made sculptures, photos, and installations based on the idea of the mysterious phenomena of the natural world.  My work explores the juncture between the known and the unknown.  I feel that this borderland between the rational and the mysterious is what has driven the imagination of humankind for generations. 

 

Six years ago I returned to painting, the media of my training and education, and I sought to recreate these half illuminated landscapes.

 

 

 

The landscape is my laboratory.  Geographic features, plants and trees, seasons and weather conditions are examined for their observable qualities. The naming and counting of these items give a sense that the natural world is knowable.  If we can name it, count it, know its qualities, we can predict it, own it.  This knowledge gives one comfort that the world is explainable.  What is beyond our grasp is explained in myths, something else is in control.
