Kathy LaChelle Allender began her dance training and performance career within color guard at North Central High School (1994-1995), Lawrence North High School (1995-1996), and Lawrence Central High School (1996-1998), spinning flag, rifle, and saber, and learning ballet and jazz dance. At Lawrence Central, under the direction of Greg Hagen and the late Tod Hinton, Kathy was awarded a plaque in 1998 for “The Most Outstanding Color Guard Member.”

Education:

Graduate of Indiana University Bloomington (BA French, AA English).

Studied ballet, jazz, Horton modern, and Afro-Cuban from director Iris Rosa of the African American Dance  Company – member and treasurer.

Studied jazz dance within the IU Ballet Department from instructor Fred
Walton.

Graduate of Lawrence Central High School. Studied ballet and jazz dance techniques from Color Guard instructors Greg Hagen and Todd Hinton – member and co-captain of the Color Guard within the “Spirit of Central” Marching Band and Guard. Performed in both marching band and Winter Guard competitions.

Granted a gratuitous apprenticeship at IndySalsa by owner and director Mathias. 03/06 –

Attended workshops given by The African American Dance Company: Elana Anderson (Horton), Boogie Mclarin (Hip Hop), Reynaldo Gonzalez (Afro-Cuban), April Berry (Dunham), Willie Hinton (Jazz), Jose Rivera (Afro-Jazz), Dr. Paschal Younge (Ghanaian), and Silfredo La O Vigo (Contemporary, Afro-Cuban/Haitian).

Attended contemporary, African, Dunham, and Horton modern workshops at the International Association of Blacks in Dance Conference in Toronto, Canada.

Affiliations:

Color Guard staff for the Marching Pride of Lawrence Township Band and Guard, teaching dance technique, Pilates, conditioning, and choreography.

Movement Class instructor for LModelz Model Management, held at Riolo Dance studio, teaching new models Pilates, various dance styles, and choreography.

Dancer and Assistant Choreographer with the cultural dance ensemble of the Haitian Association of Indiana.

Awards:

Judge for the dance category of the 2007 Prelude Awards which honors artistically talented, Indianapolis high school students with scholarships to attend a college or university in Indiana, participating in its art/dance/music program.
