Artist Participants Sought for 2022-23 Religion, Spirituality, and the Arts Program
Film; Literary; Performing; Professional Development; Social Practice Art; Visual
    Posted: May 16, 2022
Religion, Spirituality, and the Arts (RSA) is a program of the IUPUI Arts and Humanities Institute that brings together artists, religious leaders, religious communities, humanities experts, and a broad range of publics from diverse backgrounds and disciplinary perspectives for sustained study, analysis, and discussion of religious texts in a classroom environment. Directed by Rabbi Sandy Sasso, these textual discussions, which explore the varieties of religious experience and understanding, provide the inspiration for creating new artistic works (e.g. music, poetry, fiction, drama, visual art, dance). Artists share their creations through exhibitions and presentations to members of the Central Indiana community, including religious organizations, congregations, schools, libraries, and community groups. Discussion sessions will be held for 2 1/2 hours each session for a total of eight sessions, and will meet evenings from 6:00–8:30 p.m. on 9/8, 9/15, 9/22, 10/6, 10/20, 11/17, 12/1, 1/5. Sessions will be held at the Jewish Community Center, 6701 Hoover Road in Indianapolis. Artists who participate in the program to completion earn a $500 stipend. Approximately 12 artists are selected for participation each year. Artists who participated in previous years are eligible to participate again. Applications will be accepted from May 1 to June 15, 2022. Applicants may be anyone in the community who is active (as a professional or amateur) in the artistic disciplines. Selected applicants must be able to make a commitment to attend all seminar sessions and engage in open and respectful dialogue. 2022-23 Theme: “I Will Not Let You Go Until You Bless Me” This year’s theme invites artists to be interpreters of Jacob’s dreams. From the ladder that reaches to the heavens to the lonely night of wrestling, these iconic narratives challenge us to ask hard questions: what are our struggles, personal and communal, and which do we avoid? What would it mean to find a way to blessing? Reflecting on our climate crisis, what does it mean when Jacob says, “God is in this place, and I did not know it”? What do we fail to take notice of at our own peril? 2022-23 Faculty Daniel Cueto, Composer, Performer, Associate Instructor, Indiana University Jacobs School of Music Dr. Andrew Findley, Associate Faculty in the IU School of Liberal Arts and Adjunct Instructor in the Herron School of Art and Design at IUPUI Dr. Jason M. You will be asked to provide your contact information, link to your website (if applicable) and several samples of your work. There are also two questions to answer regarding your goals for participating in the program, and a demographic survey. QUESTIONS? Contact Rabbi Sandy Sasso, ssasso@gmail.com

Projects that explore interdependence, relationships, and systems through Indigenous and ancestral practices are encouraged to apply. The intended impact of the project is an important factor in the selection process. Environmental art projects that qualify for this program may focus on the following themes, but are not limited to: Regeneration Eco-social engagement Decarbonization as decolonization Ecofeminism Climate change / climate collapse Systems-restoration Interspecies relationships Natural or built systems Recycling and repurposing Clean energy production Bioplastics Selected projects must benefit the public in some way, and are required to have a public engagement component by June 30, 2023. Applications for the Queer|Art Illuminations Grant, a $10,000 annual award given to a Black trans woman or trans femme visual artist, are open through June 12. This is the grant’s third year. Queer|Art is a New York nonprofit founded in 2009 to “support a generation of LGBTQ+ artists that lost mentors to the AIDS Crisis of the 1980s,” according to the organization’s website. In addition to giving a variety of awards, Queer|Art provides a year-long mentorship program and holds events like exhibitions, film screenings, performances, and panel discussions that highlight the work of LGBTQ+ artists. “The Illuminations Grant not only highlights the lacking representation of Black trans women in the visual arts but also seeks to confront the systemic barriers that deny them artistic opportunities and a sustainable craft,” said Aaryn Lang in a statement. Lang, a vocal champion of the Black transgender community, helped develop the Illuminations Grant alongside artist Serena Jara and the grant’s funder, photographer Mariette Pathy Allen. In 2020, Brooklyn-based artist Keioui Keijaun received the Illuminations Grant and last year, New Orleans-based artist Lee Laa Ray Giullory won the award. Giullory uses meticulously staged and altered photography to explore Black mysticism and Black femme identities in rural Louisiana. The winners are selected by a panel of three judges, which this year included artist Jonathan Lyndon Chase, curator and author Kimberly Drew, and performer and fashion illustrator Connie Fleming. Qualifying mediums for the Illuminations Grant include painting and drawing, sculpture and ceramics, printmaking, photography, and fiber arts, but video mediums will also be considered. The winner will receive $10,000 and career development resources, and four finalists will receive $1,250. The winner will be announced in September. The application can be accessed on Queer | Art’s website, here.
