    Are you the next Indianapolis Youth Poet Laureate? Applications are open to: – Youth who are 13-19 years old and live in Indiana are eligible to apply. – To apply, youth must submit five poems and a resume highlighting leadership and civic or community engagement by 9/30/2022! The Indiana Youth Poet Laureate winner will then get the chance to compete for the Midwest Regional Youth Poet Laureate Ambassador title and the National Youth Poet Laureate title. This year, Indianapolis’ own Alyssa Gaines was named National Youth Poet Laureate! You could be next! Previous winners have led workshops for youth, performed at the Kennedy Center and Library of Congress in D.C., and been published by Carnegie Hall, and various other notable publications.     Indiana Repertory Theatre Seeks Submissions for Young Playwrights in Process

    Young Playwrights in Process (YPIP) is an online playwriting competition for Indiana students in grades 6-12. The competition was created by the Indiana Repertory Theatre in 2005 through the Margot L. and Robert S. Eccles Trust. YPIP encourages middle and high school students across Indiana to write, creating plays that reflect and challenge their world. YPIP events will be done entirely online! All submissions, workshops, and events will take place virtually in order to connect students across the state. Young playwrights – submit your play to YPIP and have the chance to receive $1000! The deadline to submit your play is Sunday, September 25th at 5:00pm. All submissions will receive an email with feedback from a theatre professional who read their play.     Asante Art Institute of Indianapolis is now enrolling for their fall programs, Prep4Life and Zora’s Daughters. Prep4Life Fall Session 2022 – Prep4Life is an introduction to the performing arts for ages 6-12. This will consist of a series of weekly workshops which will prepare participants for their performance of a short medley of holiday songs, choreography, and spoken word. The Asante teaching artists are experts at introducing youth to acting, singing, movement to music, and storytelling. Participation in Prep4Life is fun, educational, and a true confidence builder. Something magical happens when children have space and opportunity to learn together while they are being encouraged to be their best self. They remember how to imagine… Program Dates: 9/24/22 -12/4/22 No workshops week of 11/21/22 – 11/26/22 Saturdays: 10 AM – NOON On Thursday 10/20/22, additional Thursday workshops from 5:30 PM – 7 PM Location: Moorhead Community Resource Center 8400 E. 10th Street. 46219 Activity Fee: $100 Ages: 6-12 To Register: CLICK HERE Zora’s Daughters Fall Session 2022 – Zora’s Daughters is a creative writing and literacy program for girls ages 8 – 18 years old. This program focuses on improving skills related to reading, writing and public speaking. Participants gain inspiration from the works of great Black women writers to create their own original poems, short stories, and more. This fall, the group will be collaborating with Prep4Life to write performance pieces. Zora’s Daughters participants may even perform in the show! The group will also read and write pieces exploring themes of self-love, beauty, and identity.     The Alley Theatre Company Seeks Play Submissions for The Greenberg Playwright Competition

    The Greenberg Playwright Competition will accept submissions from Indiana residents for the 2022 Competition, beginning April 1, 2022. The deadline for submissions is March 17, 2023. Winning scripts will be performed in the month of April 2024. Named for educator, actress, and encourager Clarice Greenberg, the annual Greenberg Playwright Competition (GPC) is sponsored and hosted by The Alley Theatre in Anderson, Indiana. THE GPC calls for original one-act plays, written by playwrights from the state of Indiana, suitable for simple, black box, in-the-round, performances by The Alley Theatre, in the Jake Hoover Studio Theatre. Winning plays are announced on the opening night of The Alley Theatre’s March production. These scripts are cast, work-shopped, and rehearsed during the summer, and performed in the fall of each season, prior to the first production of The Alley Theatre season. AGE-GROUP CATEGORIES: A winner is chosen from each category: 1) Middle School/6th-8th Grade, 2) High School/9th-12th Grade, 3) College Age/18-26 years, 4) Post-College Age/27+ years AWARDS & PERFORMANCES: Each of the 4 winners receives a cash prize of $500. The Alley Theatre secures Stage Directors/Editors for each script, casts the shows, and they are performed the following fall prior to The Alley’s season. SUBMISSIONS: Submitted plays, in all categories, are to be no more than 20-minutes in length, contain no more than 7 characters, appropriate for audiences of all ages, and performable without the need for anything more than simple furniture and set appropriate for in-the-round performances. A 3-person jury panel of theatre professionals will peruse all scripts and choose 1 winner in each of the 4 age groups. Scripts are submitted as digital files only (WORD or PDF) – a digital cover sheet must accompany scripts (Name, Address, Email Address, Phone Number, Age, Grade in School if Applicable) – submitted to: thealleytheatremail@gmail.com. Rights to the plays are retained by the playwrights.
