The Center for Bat Research, Outreach, and Conservation will be hosting the 10th Annual Indiana Bat Festival on the campus of Indiana State University in Terre Haute on September 24, 2016. Over 1000 people join together for a day of lectures by guest bat experts, demonstrations with live bats and raptors, children’s activities, and an outdoor adventure course. They hope you’ll mark it on your calendar and attend this FREE event. Daytime activities are in ISU’s Science Building from 10 am-4 pm and evening activities are at Dobbs Park from 6–10 pm.

In conjunction with this festival, they hold an art contest for children and adults. The theme is “The Many Faces of Bats: Diversity in Flight, Form, and Function”, highlighting the tremendous diversity in bats around the world. There are over 1300 species of bats, 12 of which occur in Indiana. Most bats, including all species in Indiana, are insectivorous; globally, however, bat diets are diverse—some eat fruit, nectar, pollen, other animals, and three vampire bat species eat blood! Bats are varied in form, too—some have unique facial structures called noseleaves, others have massive ears almost the size of their entire body, and some have funny wrinkly faces. Even in Indiana, you'll see variation in bat wing sizes and shapes, with these shapes indicating the flight styles of bats. They have created a webpage with photos of bats from around the world, which you can use for inspiration! Please visit http://www.isubatcenter.org/bat-festival/ to see photos and examples of artwork from previous festivals. Also check out their posts and photos on Facebook (Center for Bat Research, Outreach, and Conservation).

You are invited to submit your work in person or by mail between now and September 16th 2016. There are cash prizes for winners over 18 and for those between 13 and 17, and there are nominal entry fees for these age categories. For kids 12 and under, there is no entry fee and winners are awarded a bat t-shirt and a book on the Bats of Indiana. They will display the artwork at the 10th Annual Indiana Bat Festival. Please see the form below for more details on how to submit artwork.

They hope you will submit your artwork and we hope to see you at the 10th Annual Indiana Bat Festival on September 24th. Please contact the Bat Center with any questions about the art contest (Brianne.Walters@indstate.edu or 812-237-2808).
