UNC Charlotte is accepting qualifications from professional artists, artist teams, or architects in response to the opportunity to create a commemorative space in Belk Plaza, between the front entrance of the Kennedy Building and the recently completed ellipse and fountain. The space is intended to memorialize the shootings of April 30, 2019 in which two students, Ellis Reed Parlier and Riley Howell, lost their lives and four students, Rami Alramadhan, Sean DeHart, Emily Houpt, and Drew Pescaro, were injured.

BUDGET: $900,000

ELIGIBILITY: U.S.-based professional artists/artist teams/architects who have experience with public art project commissions over $280,000 in the past
ten (10) years and who have completed at least three commissions in the past ten years.

DEADLINE: December 2, 2020

Memorial/Commemorative Space Criteria

  • Artwork should be integrated into the site.
  • Remember Reed Parlier and Riley Howell by name.
  • Acknowledge those wounded, both physically and psychologically.
  • Evoke the unity, strength, and resilience of the UNC Charlotte Community.
  • Create a commemorative space that is interactive.
  • Combine art, architecture and landscape to provide a place of pause in the center of campus.
  • Artwork should be designed to accommodate people of all ages and abilities.
  • Artwork should be constructed of durable materials capable of withstanding the elements and campus use for a duration of 20+ years.
  • Artwork should evocatively and poetically address the gravity and significance of what is being memorialized.

Up to four finalists will be awarded a $5,000 honorarium to develop artwork/commemorative space pre-proposals and cover travel expenses and
other project related expenses including a contingency.

WHAT TO PROVIDE

  1. Credentials: A resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV) demonstrating professional history and skills or experience (maximum two pages) If applying as a team, all team members must submit resumes
  2. Statement of Interest: A brief introductory narrative that also provides insight about your interest in the project and a written description of your preliminary ideas for the memorial and commemorative space (maximum three pages)
  3. Images: Up to eight (8) images or three digital video or movie files limited to two minutes each of recent work completed in the last ten (10) years. Up to three of the images/videos may include initial pre-conceptual work envisioned for this project.
  4. Annotation: titles, date, media, dimensions, and budgets of submitted images.
