2022 Indiana State Fair - A Mural Competition on Cars

Facilitated by Hue Murals

Four Indiana mural artists compete for Best in Show as they paint murals live starting on July 29. The cars will be on display for the duration of the fair to allow maximum viewership, along with artist signage. This event is planned and facilitated by Hue Murals.

Eligibility

Must be 18 years or older to participate
Must be a current Indiana resident
No entry fee is required
A written design for the mural is optional - There are no sketches or design concepts needed at this time.
Artists are allowed to submit together as a team of up to 4 artists. If that team wins a prize, they will receive one payment which will need to be divided amongst the team members.
No insurance will be required, but all artists will need to sign a liability waiver in order to participate.

Event Details

Date: Artists will paint murals on their assigned cars on July 29 and July 30, 2022 during the opening weekend of the Indiana State Fair. Judging will take place on July 31, 2022.

Time: Artists will be asked to set up their paint stations between 9am and 10am on paint days (July 29 and 30), and to live paint from 10am to 1pm for Indiana State Fair visitors. Artists will be encouraged to take a lunch and shade break at 1pm. If artists need extra paint time, they may stay onsite and paint until 3pm each day. All artists must pack up between 3pm and 4pm each day, and be off site by 4pm. Preparation: The Indiana State Fair will provide each artist with a car to paint. The Indiana State Fair will prime the car in advance of the event so that the artists have minimal preparation work. The cars will not be operational, so artists may choose to either paint windows, tires, etc. or to tape off sections of the car that they do not wish to paint. The Indiana State Fair is not responsible for taping off any sections of the provided car. If the artist desires to draw their design on the car ahead of time, or to tape or otherwise prepare their car in any specific way, they will be allowed to do so on July 28, 2022. Preparation times can be confirmed with the event coordinator after the artist has been selected for the event.

Materials: The artist may use whatever materials they desire. The artist is not responsible for sealing any of the artwork after completion. The artist will be asked to confirm which materials they plan to use in advance of the event. Artists are allowed to use reference images and materials so long as the final work is completely original and does not infringe on the rights of any other person, artist, or entity.

Artwork Goals & Theme: The artists may paint the theme of their choosing. Complete artistic freedom is allowed as long as the artwork is family friendly, non-violent, non political, suitable for all ages and audiences, and is welcoming, positive, and inclusive. If the artist would like guidance on artwork themes, ideas can be provided by the event coordinator. No design concept or sketch will be required at any point leading up to the event or during it, but the artist will need to provide a written design concept for approval if selected. This is meant to protect the artist’s time and investment, but to ensure that mural content is approved by the Indiana State Fair.
