Program Overview
Art for Learning’s (AFL) Fresh StART program engages students in a school-based effort to improve their community through art. In a series of workshops, students and their families identify what they could do to improve their neighborhood or space. Students are encouraged through various art forms to share their thoughts about a particular topic. The students’ artworks in a form of, but not limited to, a story, dance, poem, sculpture, will serve as the inspiration for the final work produced by a professional artist.

Project Goal
To design and produce a mural on a 43 ft. x 8 ft. interior wall depicting anti-bullying themes. A wallpaper mural is preferred however other creative ideas/materials are welcome.

  • Eligibility
  • Ability to travel to Shelbyville
  • Design ideas must clearly depict student voice
  • Ability to present three (3) design ideas for voting by the school community
  • Must participate in a culminating/public reveal event
  • Responsive to communications with the project team
  • Document the progress of the work on social media to keep the students informed
  • Submit brief journal entries to AFL via email
  • Enter into a contractual agreement with AFL and agree to a background check

Budget
$3,300, all-inclusive fee for the artist fee, materials, production, cost of installation, travel and transportation, and other related expenses. 2/3 of the amount will be paid at the start of the project; final payment will be released upon completion.

Project Timeframe
March 26 – 30 : 2- hr. planning meeting with the project team; reading of students’ stories & poems
April : present prototypes to school community for voting
April – May : updates on social media
May 18 : artwork installed
May 22 : reveal ceremony
