ADULT ROLES:
Alison – (Female identified, 43 years old, mezzo with belt) A brilliant, funny woman seeking to understand her family better. She’s a cultured, successful lesbian cartoonist who feels both removed from and drawn to her small town Pennsylvania upbringing. Seeking a non-traditional leading lady with charisma and a dry sense of humor.
Medium Alison – (Female identified, 18-19 years old, mezzo with belt) A younger, more confused, less self-assured version of Alison. She is struggling to find herself during her freshman year of college. Seeking a smart actress and singer who can access her vulnerability.
Bruce – (Male identified, early 40’s, bari-tenor) Alison’s father, a very complicated man who is fixated on outward appearances. He uses his wife and family as a mask to make him seem “normal”, but is pulled by his attraction to men. He has a serious temper, but he can also be charming. Seeking a charismatic leading man who isn’t afraid to explore his dark side.
Helen – (Female identified, early 40’s, soprano) Alison’s mother, the glue that holds the family together. An artist at heart, she is a long-suffering wife who is confused and distressed by her husband’s behavior. She loves her children and wants them to have a different kind of life than she’s had. Seeking a leading lady with a great voice and strong acting.
Joan/Others – (Female identified, 19-20, any voice type) Medium Alison’s first girlfriend. She is self-confident in a very sexy way and more politically engaged than Alison is when they meet. She guides Alison into the world of queer culture. Also plays back-up singer to Bobby Jeremy. Seeking a strong actress with a good voice.
Roy/Bobby Jeremy/Others – (Male identified, early 20’s, pop tenor) Seeking an attractive, versatile actor to play the Bechdel’s babysitter/yard boy Roy, as well as other assorted roles throughout the show. Must have great pop vocal chops to play Bobby Jeremy.
CHILD ROLES:
Small Alison – (9-10 years old, soprano with some pop sound) A sweet, precocious tomboy who adores her father. She has a great sense of fun and like to play with her brothers. She’s starting to realize she is different from her friends. Seeking an exceptional young actress with a great voice and significant acting experience.
John (8-9 years old) and Christian (6-7 years old) – Alison’s younger brothers. They are typical boys, with lots of energy and a tight bond with each other and Small Alison. Seeking excellent young performers who sing and dance well.
