Fountain Square Merchants Association Announces Call for Artists for Masterpiece in a Day 2018
The Fountain Square Merchants Association (FSMA) has announced the Call for Artists for the Masterpiece in a Day competition, during the Art Squared festival on Saturday, September 15th.
All entrants must be 18 years or older to compete and win prizes. Registration occurs on the day of, with participants collecting a form at the Competition Check-In, located at 924 S. Shelby Street, across from Arthurs’s Music Store, any time between 9 am and 11 am.
There is no subject matter restriction other than appropriateness for public presentation, as Masterpiece in a Day is a family-friendly event.
After registering, artists are to create their masterpiece anywhere in the Fountain Square neighborhood,
near the Art Squared activities. The work place boundaries are Pleasant Street to the north, Olive Street
to the east, Sanders Street to the south, St. Patrick Street to the west, with an angled boundary of Buchanan Street down the alley to Hosbrook Street to cap off the northwest.
The artists have until 3pm that day to complete their work, and must turn the piece in at the Check-In
location to be considered for judging, and eligible for prizes. All artwork must be started and finished on
location, no prior work is allowed. Judging will begin at 3:30pm, and be completed by 5pm. The winners will be announced at 6pm at the Check-In location, with monetary prizes distributed at that time.
Art work can be created in any medium.
*2 Dimensional –Includes painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, and most textiles. These entries
are primarily on a flat plane.
*3 Dimensional – Sculptures and entries that occupy space and are intended to be viewed from multiple
angles. These entries are not intended to be site specific. These items must be delivered to the judging area and artists will be responsible for their own display set-up.
The prize winning pieces will become the property of the Fountain Square Merchants Association. Prize
money is considered a purchase price for the piece.
*No “site required” installation category
Winners will be selected by a panel of three judges. Judges this year are Pam Allee, of the Harrison
Center for the Arts, Ritch Hanna, of the Stutz Artist Association, and Katrina Murray, of the Circle City
Winning entries, and the top ten entries held otherwise, will be placed on public display, at the Circle
City Industrial Complex (CCIC) for the October First Friday, as well as at the Fountain Square public
library, between MIAD and First Friday. Fountain Square Merchants Association will photograph and
publish all works selected, and retains the right to display or sell copies of these works, and to use them for promotional purposes. Proceeds from the sale will fund subsequent years’ Masterpiece in a Day activities.
