Census 2020 Seeks Count Ambassadors

Census 2020 Complete Count Ambassador Position Description

Hours: 5-25 hours per week
Compensation: $12/hour, with mileage reimbursed
Typical schedule: Mainly weekends, but some weekdays as needed
Contracted period: April 2019-March 2020

Position Summary:

Count Me INdy, Indianapolis’ Census 2020 Complete Count Campaign, is hiring! They’re looking for five reliable movers and shakers to work part-time out in the community as Complete Count Ambassadors, promoting self-response to the census in 2020. If you’re self-motivated, outgoing, and looking for a flexible opportunity, then look no further. As a Complete Count Ambassador, you’ll serve as one of the public faces for Indianapolis’ Census 2020 campaign and be responsible for engaging with the community throughout the year, spreading awareness about and getting people excited for the upcoming census. You’ll work on a sliding schedule, likely accumulating more hours during late summer and early fall and less hours during the colder months.

This contract-based position might be for you if:

You enjoy a fast-paced, on-the-go sort of work environment. Your “office” will change regularly – you might be at Indy Pride in Military Park one day or on the near eastside at a neighborhood center the next day – so you must like being out and about in the community.

You are a social butterfly and love talking to people from all different walks of life. You will be interacting with a wide spectrum of people, so always being respectful and having a warm, welcoming personality is paramount – if you’re a Parks & Rec fan, think Leslie Knope or Tom Haverford, not Ron Swanson or April Ludgate.

You communicate clearly. You write well and articulate yourself even better. You explain complicated concepts in an approachable, fun, and engaging way with ease, and are clever and creative on social media. You’ll make sure #CountMeINdy is always trending.

You can speak two or more languages. ¿Hablas español? Bamazaga pyaw daq lar? We need you! To reach all populations within our community, particularly those most at risk of being undercounted in Census 2020, preference will be given to bilingual and multilingual applicants.

You are as cool as a cucumber under pressure. At times, interacting with the public can be challenging. You might get a question thrown at you that you don’t quite know how to answer, but being quick on your feet and remaining graceful have always been strong suits of yours.

You understand the importance of a fair and accurate census count. You’re a nerd for all things data and genuinely see the value in ensuring all residents are counted within Indianapolis. Your enthusiasm for the Count Me INdy campaign is contagious!

To land this gig, you must also:

  • Have a high school diploma
  • Be at least 18 years or older
  • Have a reliable set of wheels to get yourself and promotional materials to and from events
  • Be able to carry up to 50 pounds and stand on your feet for long periods of time

Count Me INdy is the City of Indianapolis’ Census 2020 Complete Count Campaign, dedicated to counting all residents – whoever they are and wherever they’re from. Visit www.countmeindy.com for more information.

To apply to this position, E-mail your cover letter and resume to countmeindy@indy.gov by March 31, 2019.
