The Elephant in the Room
The Elephant in the Room seeks to explore relationships and dependencies between humans and animals. Interactions with the natural environment and with other creatures significantly defines the human experience. The dichotomy between the two adapts and shifts according to time, culture, species, and circumstance. The Elephant in the Room challenges artists not only to bring attention to difficult topics like the industrialized meat and dairy industry, domestic animal breeding, homeless pet populations, and vivisection within cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, but also welcomes examples of harmony and mutual respect between human and animal to create a realistic and dynamic representation of human intentions toward animals. The Elephant in the Room will explore the enigma that some creatures are innately friends while others are innately tools for survival or convenience. This exhibition is open to all interpretations of the theme and all medium and scales of work.
GALLERY: The Indiana University Kokomo Downtown Gallery is located in downtown Kokomo. The gallery displays artwork by students, faculty, alumni and local, regional and national artists throughout the year. They CANNOT accept payment through CAFÉ. There will be a $25 per artist entry fee that will be invoiced once the entry is received.
ELIGIBILITY: The juried exhibition is open to all artists over the age of 16, who reside in the United States. All fine art media are accepted including: painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, photography, collage, digital, and mixed media. All work must be original, completed in the last two years. Sculptures should not exceed 9ft in height due to gallery space. All work must be accurately represented in jpeg images. Work not meeting these criteria will not be exhibited.
PRESENTATION: Professional presentation of each piece is required. 2D artwork must be framed and have a secure way to hang the piece if it requires hanging. For canvases, the sides and all staples must be covered. Sculptures should be fully assembled and structurally sound and include detailed installation instructions, if necessary.
ENTRY: All entries must be made through the CaFE website. https://artist.callforentry.org/festivals_unique_info.php?ID=6974. All entries will be chosen from high-resolution (300dpi) jpeg images. Files not to exceed 5MB. For 3D works only, a second detail photo may be uploaded. Video and sound work is accepted. Please put instillation and presentation details in the comment section of your application. The gallery reserves the right to reproduce images accepted into the show for promoting and archiving the exhibition. Due to a generous donor, there will not be a fee required for entry. Questions should be directed to ugallery@iuk.edu subject line “The Elephant in the Room”. There will be a $25 per artist entry fee that will be invoiced once the entry is received.
SALES: Sales are encouraged and the gallery will receive a 30% commission for any sold artwork. The sale of artwork will be between the artist and the purchaser. There is a portion of the contract that you will have to fill out regards to the sale of your artwork. Once the artist receives payment, artists will notify the art gallery and they will invoice the artist for the commission.
DELIVERY & PICK-UP: Delivery and pick-up of artwork will be the responsibility of the artist. The artist may choose to either personally drop-off and pick-up the work during gallery hours or ship their work to the gallery. It is the artist’s responsibility to send any shipped artwork in a sturdy, reusable box with a PREPAID return shipping label inside. Any work not picked up 30 days after the end of the show will become the property of the Indiana University Kokomo Downtown Gallery.
