The Diane Dammeyer Fellowship in Photographic Arts and Social Issues is a unique collaboration between the Photography Department at Columbia College Chicago and Heartland Alliance, a leading global anti-poverty organization.
The Diane Dammeyer Fellowship in Photographic Arts and Social Issues awards a $25,000 stipend to socially engaged photographers to help them produce compelling and dynamic projects highlighting human rights and social issues. The Fellowship is open to applicants who hold MFA degrees in photography or related fields.
“I had an interest in this fellowship and found it a great opportunity for me to broaden my practice and just focus on an issue that really matters to me deeply,” says Anahid Ghorbani, 2017-2018 recipient of the Fellowship.
Ghorbani’s original project will explore the challenges of immigrant women at Heartland Alliance, an international social service organization and leader in anti-poverty initiatives. Ghorbani added that she wanted to focus on this population because, as an Iranian, she identifies with their struggles — such as learning new languages and adjusting to a new country. Ghorbani will have nine months to work with Heartland Alliance clients and develop a culminating exhibition.
