Gallery 924 at the Arts Council Seeks Work Created in Response to PBS Digital Studios’ The Art Assignment

The Art Assignment is an online video series produced in partnership with PBS Digital Studios and hosted by curator Sarah Urist Green. Green travels around the U.S. to meet with artists to obtain assignments from them based on their own art practice, which viewers can then complete on their own and share online.

Gallery 924, in conjunction with The Art Assignment, is seeking entries from artists in Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Kentucky and Michigan for a themed group show featuring artwork created in response to three of The Art Assignment’s videos from Indiana artists:

Brian McCutcheon's "Customize It": 1) Find a common object that you find interesting, 2) Make a list of identifying traits about that object, 3) Customize the object while thinking about and playing with one of those traits

Lauren Zoll's "Off": 1) Turn off a screen, 2) Take a photo of only the screen, 3) Make sure to think of color, pattern, and form. Don't include any humans in the frame.

Nathaniel Russell's "Fake Flyer": Make a flyer or poster that gives advice, shares something about your life, or promotes an imagined event.

All media, disciplines, styles, and interpretations of assignments are welcome.

Celebrating the immense and innovative Art Assignment community, our goal is to highlight the local artists who have participated in the series and gather a diverse sampling of viewership responses culled from our own community. While the series prompts artists to submit responses digitally, we seek to bring these artworks out from the digital platform and feature them in a gallery setting.

Submissions will be narrowed down by an internal selection committee. Artwork will be curated and installed by Gallery 924 staff and Sarah Urist Green. The show will open with a public reception during the IDADA First Friday Art Tour on Friday, August 5th and close on Thursday, August 25, 2016.

  • All artists, living in Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, or Kentucky over the age of 18 are welcome to submit.
  • There are no size restrictions on artwork. If your large-scale work is accepted into the show, the gallery staff will work with you to find a display solution. If 2D, work must be framed (if appropriate), wired, and ready to hang.
  • Work may or may not be for sale.

To submit, please email the following to llord@indyarts.org:

  • Up to 3 (three) images
    • Images should be 72dpi and around 800 pixels in any direction or of a file size less than 1MB each.
  • Image list with:
    • the Art Assignment video to which you responded
    • title
    • date
    • medium
    • dimensions*
    • price**
    • (list any special installation requirements on image list as well – e.g. needs electricity, comes with own plinth, etc.)

*Please include dimensions of actual display space, meaning including any frames. Also, if your work is framed with anything other than a simple black gallery frame, please send a photo of the frame as well.

**Please note that there is a 25% commission on all artwork sold in the gallery. The commission proceeds will be split between Gallery 924 and The Art Assignment / PBS Digital Studios. Artists should keep their prices at a consistent level based upon previous sales, not commission rates.

Selected work must be delivered to Gallery 924 by Wednesday, July 27, 2016 and if not sold must be picked up within a week of the close of the exhibition. Artists are responsible for shipping both ways. Return shipping arrangements must be made prior to Gallery 924 receipt of the artwork.

Artists are encouraged to attend the opening, but not required. Artwork will be insured by the gallery for the entirety of the time it is in the gallery. Artists will be given a digital marketing tool kit and asked to help promote the show to their patrons.
