Gallery 924 Seeks Contemporary Work for Young Collectors II Exhibition

Gallery 924 is seeking entries from central Indiana artists for a group show geared towards young patrons in an effort to engage, educate, and create a life-long love of the arts. All media, disciplines, sizes, and styles are welcome.

In June and July of 2018, Gallery 924 will host “The Young Collectors Show II.” Our inaugural Young Collectors Show occurred in the winter of 2016 and was our most widely attended exhibition to date. Typically, when you see a show for “young collectors” you think of the 20 and 30 – something young professionals the arts community is so eager to engage. This show is slightly different. Our target age for our “young collectors” is 3 – 12 years old. The show will be curated and installed with this age group in mind. We wish to encourage young children in their ability and inclination to appreciate unique, interesting, fine art. It is our hope that the opportunity to view, talk about, and learn about high quality artwork will build their appreciation for the arts in general; increasing the likelihood they grow up to be patrons of the arts.

Our goals with this exhibition are not only to engage young people in an accessible and welcoming gallery setting and encourage their parents to purchase original artwork for their homes and even the child’s own bedroom, but also to educate the children on what they are seeing.

  • Artwork will be selected and installed for optimal viewing by 3 - 12 year
    old patrons
  • Artwork will be offered in a range of prices including original works and prints/reproductions/multiples if artists are interested in offering these options along with their original artwork
  • Expanded didactic information will be presented on labels made to engage young viewers and their families
  • Select pieces from the show will be incorporated into a “coloring book” complete with a glossary of terms on process and style. If your artwork is accepted into the show, you may choose whether or not to be included in the educational “coloring book.” The coloring book will be given to each child as a free resource to learn more about Indy-based artists. If your work is selected for the show, you will be asked to submit a statement about your work and your process to support the educational goals of this show.

Selection criteria: We do not have specific themes or aesthetic guidelines for this show other than we do not wish to “talk down” to children. The artwork should be of high quality and not feature characters from nationally recognized cartoons, movies, etc. The goal is to move away from the standard and traditional corporate aesthetic typically offered to children of this age. Contemporary, bold, fanciful, whimsical, beautiful, intriguing, conceptual, narrative, figurative, abstract, naturalistic, realistic, non-objective – all styles and media are welcome. As is typical of group shows atGallery 924, a few very strong pieces will dictate the direction of the show which could go in many foreseeable directions. This group exhibition will be chosen by an internal selection committee and curated and installed by the Gallery 924 staff. The show will open with a Thursday night Collectors’ Night event followed by a public First Friday opening in June 2018. The show will be open on select Saturdays to allow more families with children to view the show.

If 2D, work must be framed (if appropriate), wired, and ready to hang. There are no size restrictions on artwork. If your large-scale work is accepted into the show, the gallery staff will work with you to find a display solution.

All central Indiana artists over the age of 18 are welcome to submit. For these purposes, central Indiana is considered Marion and the seven surrounding counties.

Work must be delivered May 25 – 28 (exact times to be announced) and if not sold must be picked up within a week of the close of the exhibition. Artists are encouraged to attend the opening, but not required. Artwork will be insured by the gallery for the entirety of the time it is in the gallery. Artists will be given a digital marketing tool kit and asked to help promote the show to their patrons.

  • To submit, please email the following to gallery924@indyarts.org:
    Up to 5 (five) images

    • Images should be 72dpi and around 800 pixels in any direction or of a file
size less than 1MB each. (Images used for CAFÉ, SLIDEROOM or other
      submission sites are acceptable)
  • Image list in the body of the e-mail (not in a separate document) including title,
date, medium, dimensions* and price**. List any special installation requirements
on image list as well – e.g. needs electricity, comes with own plinth, etc.
  • Please indicate if you will offer reproductions/prints/multiples, etc. and the price range for these pieces.
*Please include dimensions of actual display space, meaning including any frames. Also, if your work is framed with anything other than a simple black gallery frame, please send a photo of the frame as well.
**Please note that Gallery 924 takes a 25% commission on all artwork sold in the gallery; however, artists should keep their prices at a consistent level based upon previous sales, not commission rates.

Deadline: Monday, March 5 at midnight.
