Harrison Center Seeks Work About "Home in Indiana"

The Harrison Center for the Arts and the Spirit & Place event, ​Genius Loci: Herman B Wells and the Spirit of P​lace are seeking artists to participate in a group exhibit in the City Gallery to open on Friday, November 4, 2016​.

What is “home” and what does it mean to us? We often think of home as the building that offers us refuge from the world, or as the people who call us their own. But what if the essence of home runs deeper than bricks and mortar or a cast of characters? What if the spirit of a place is what makes it “home?” Herman B Wells, the legendary president of Indiana University, certainly thought so.

They invite you to capture what you believe to be the essence of “home in Indiana” in what will be a cohesive, yet by no means homogenous, show in the City Gallery. Our desire for this show is for its artists to creatively and uniquely portray what exactly “home” means to them in the hopes that these interpretations will spur on the conversation surrounding what the spirit of home in Indiana truly is. The idea of Genius Loci, latin for “spirit of place,” should drive artists to contemplate the essence of “home” in and through their work.

Submission of work:

• All applications are due by Friday, September 16, 2016 at 5:30 PM.
• Please send a maximum of six digital images via email along with a completed entry form.
• Up to three pieces per artist may be selected for inclusion in the show.
• Images must be labeled with name, title, size, and media. You may send a separate list that matches up with corresponding numbered images.
• A bio, artist statement, and resume are encouraged, but not required.
• Artists who are chosen to participate will be notified by September 23, 2016.

Show Dates: ​November 4 through November 23, 2016​ in the City Gallery located in the Harrison Center for the Arts, 1505 N Delaware St, Indianapolis, IN 46202.

Requirements for participating artists:

• Must follow established art delivery and pickup schedules
• Artwork must be presented in a professional manner and ready to display upon arrival
• Pieces that are not easily hung should be installed by the artist
• Because this show’s theme relates specifically to home in Indiana, artists should be from and/or living in Indiana to submit work
• Art must be for sale

An artist can convey the spirit of “home” in Indiana in a way that few can. Your visual voice and personal aesthetic are unique pieces of Indiana’s genius loci so please join in the great conversation and ponder “home” with the Harrison Center.
