Job Summary

Responsibilities include assisting the Gallery Director in all areas of gallery management including administrative and managerial support, exhibition design and installation, and related programs.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Assists with artist contracts; exhibition insurance; artwork shipping.
  • Helps book visiting artist accommodations.
  • Helps organize and manage events associated with visiting artist lectures; maintains gallery calendars; documents exhibitions; purchasing goods and services; assists in the reconciliation of accounts, and answers inquiries related to exhibitions and programming; supports in scheduling of work-study and hourly workers and their supervision.
  • Plays a key role in exhibition design and installation including unpacking/packing and documenting incoming and outgoing artwork, creating, and implementing exhibition layouts including lighting, wall didactics, and labels, while helping supervise work study students and graduate assistants to prepare galleries for exhibitions; working with visiting artists to install and de-install exhibitions; assistance with promoting and attending gallery openings and programs.
  • Assists the Gallery Director with faculty and student engagement efforts. Some travel to and from artist studios, museums, and galleries may be required. Must be available to attend evening and weekend events when required.

General Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the maintenance and conservation of artwork and museum artifacts, including cleaning, reframing, rematting, reglazing, and building housing.
  • Assists with preparation of installation of exhibits and frequently interacts with other Museum Services staff to determine scheduling, installation needs, and timeline.
  • Maintains workshop, including upkeep and routine inspection and maintenance of equipment. Repairs or upgrades equipment as needed.
  • Assists with collection management efforts and may assist with the installation of large projects, performing inventory, and moving art and museum artifacts.
  • Makes ongoing technical and spatial adjustments to exhibits after initial installation. Ensures proper condition of artwork and museum artifacts, escalating issues to appropriate staff as needed.
  • Documents processes; may provide guidance to student or temporary staff.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required

  • High school diploma or GED

Preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree in Art History, Studio Art, Curatorial/Museum Studies or other related fields

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

  • 2 years in related field

  • Experience in areas such as collections management, art handling, exhibition design, and object installation involving a variety of media
  • Familiarity with best practices for gallery repair and maintenance, digital/web/design skills
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational and collaboration skills

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires both sedentary work and the ability to move about for long periods of time. It also requires good communication skills and the ability to use tools, operate machinery, and complete construction projects with precision and accuracy. The ability to move heavy objects, provide support for heavy objects and perform strenuous labor is required. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential tasks with or without an accommodation.

$15 – $18 per hour commensurate with experience
